If low light performance is a big issue then look for examples on here or even Flickr. You can usually check the EXIF data on most shots there. I've shot weddings with the Sigma 17-70 and Sigma 17-50 2.8 and i really like the 17-50 images but miss the longer reach..sometimes. For me having a quiet lens really makes a difference at weddings so from your choices the Pentax 16-85 may be the better choice. If you have to crank up the ISO just edit the noise out in post processing. I also use the Tamron 70-200 2.8 for most of the portraits I do at events and weddings. The sound of the screw drive isn't a factor there where the Sigma shines during the ceremony with it silent focusing.

Very nice shots. Well done.

At some stage, you might want to look for a lens with more reach than 200mm (especially for use with a camera with a 12mp sensor, which gives less scope for cropping than the later ones with more mpx). With your skills and interest in birds, one of the xx-300mm lenses would be a worthwhile acquisition. The Sigma 70-300 or the Pentax DA-L 55-300 are quite cheap and offer a lot of bang for buck.

Sounds like a perfect solution! [emoji1]

After you've used both, we'd be happy to hear your opinions on the two. When I'm looking for lens advice it's nice to get feedback from people who have both lenses I'm considering and can give a direct comparison. I think this is a pair plenty of people will consider in the future.

When I did weddings on film, it was with a FA28-105, which is similar to the range of the 16-85. It worked well, but it really needed extra light to excel.

I would suggest the 16-85 plus at least one 'full-sized' flash if you don't already have one. Large groups will want more than that.

Even if you prefer natural light, balanced fill is your friend...

I have had both lenses but have minimal experience at weddings. Without further definition of what kind of shots you want to take it's hard to say. Overall it's going to depend on which camera you put those lenses on.

Overall there isn't even a question about which is the better lens. The 16-85 by a mile.

HOWEVER for your intended use I would probably give the edge to the 17-50.

I don't know what kind of shots and images or style that you have but from my very limited experience a longer lens will be a very useful thing. If you did a two body setup with a 17-50 on one and 70-200 on the other (I would put it on a stick or something) then you could get 90% of what you are looking for. Again though, this is assuming that you are an official photographer who will go to where the event is at before hand, figure out who is going to be where, where is the best spot for photos for each scenario including the type of lighting, and will be given some measure of leeway to 'move about' along the predetermined schedule.

I tried being a wedding photographer once (it was actually a very informal wedding of a cousin) and I didn't have the luxury of scoping out the venue or moving around as needed (or making space for the photographer) and I learned real quick that weddings are definitely probably one of, if not the most challenging thing to shoot.
