So lens number one has been purchased an 18-135 for £310 and I had a gift voucher so a nice lense for £150, bargain! I can't wait to give it a try.
So as a follow up question what filters would you recommend especially a general UV (for protection), neutral density filter and polarizer filters.
Now to start saving for possible lens number 2 :)
Thanks again everyone.

Thank you everyone for your words of advice and suggestions. As I'll be doing a variety of photography styles, people/street is my normal favorite type but this trip will mean I'll be doing some landscape (Uluru and Kings Canyon, beaches etc) and animal photos too. So I have decided, based on your advice, that 2 new lenses will be called for. :) ---------- Post added 12-05-14 at 07:01 AM ---------- @hjoseph7 what you say is interesting because the sigma seems to come out on top in most reviews but you have added some interesting points which I will now consider.

Hi All,
I'm looking to treat myself to a lens upgrade, using my trip to Australia as the "excuse". I wondered what your thoughts are on the best lens for the money and for travelling. If you had to pick 1 lens
I'll have my kit lenses and trusty manual 50mm so this will be my second non-kit lens for my Pentax k5.
Thanks,
Michelle

It's showing now because I gave up on using a link option and uploaded a photo to my gallery here (which I think takes up extra space on your servers)...

Though I'm not professional the Olympics was the first run I had with my new K5 and wow have I been impressed! Fencing shots in really difficult light from nearly the farthest point from the fencers in the joint, and still I got some impressive shots.
As well as this photo of some dark clouds over the Basketball court in the Park.
Loving it! Up next the closing ceremony. Don't think my zoom will quite cut it from where I'll be sitting in the stadium stay tuned....
