Just came from the Ricoh USA sight and it said the K-70 is discontinued. Does that mean a new model is on the horizon or are they cutting back on the number of models they are going to carry, which at this point is pretty small.

Been reading all these posts re: the new K3 III or what ever, but nothing on an updated K70. Any reports or rumors anyone is aware of? It's been out a while and would think a new model is in the works sometime.

I just went to the Ricoh imaging website. Looked up dsl cameras and saw just the k1(ll), k70, and kp. Looked under discontinued models/dslrs and here were the ks2, k3, k3II. Are these truly discontinued and what is coming? I know I've been away for a while but reading recent threads I haven't picked up on these models being discontinued. Am I misreading something here?

Thanks all for the quick replies. Looks like either of the two would be a good value and choice. I'll watch for any more replies and give feedback after I make my purchase. Hopefully I can put some photos on as well.

In looking over various posts I haven't noticed any re: that issue. Hopefully it has been resolved. I stumbled across my problem as we were getting ready to go to a wedding. Unfortunately, didn' t have time to investigate. My loss. Had worked fine up until then.

Thanks Adam, always value your feedback. One thing I loved with my k30 was the grip. Are the k70/3 comparable? Reading reviews it would seem that they are.

---------- Post added 08-12-18 at 02:17 PM ----------

We are going to the Smokey Mountains in Oct for the colors. Want to have something by then. I'll have my k30 for backup with a manual lens but want something I can auto focus for quick shots and ease of use.

Been away from PF for a while so this may be redundant in nature. My K-30 I believe has developed that dreaded aperture block issue. Black or under exposed pics. Put a manual lens on and all is fine. Pondering whether paying to get it fixed is worth it since it is 5 yrs old or so. Have contemplated on upgrading to the K70 but worried whether you are experiencing the same problem on that model or has Pentax resolved the issue. Also looking at the K3 as an alternative too. I'll be getting body only probably. Hope this isn't too over played as I have said I haven't follow the forum in quite a while. Should I fix, go K70 or K3? Good to be back. Any advice will be appreciated.

K-30 Lens Setting Issue

To all, this may be mute in that I have a bad camera setting but when I put on my Tamron 28-105 lens and put it in the A setting, the only dial setting my camera seems to recognize is AV. I've tried AF/AF.C, even manual and no affect. It auto focuses fine. But regardless of what dial setting I put it in the camera says AV. I put the kit lens on and it works fine. I have the camera set to RAW. Would that have any thing to do with it? Is this a lens issue or something else? I'm sure this has been addressed before but couldn't find anything referencing it. I have the enable setting set to enable as well. Other than that I don't know what I may have changed that could be causing this or if this is just normal. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

We are flying to NC in the next 3 weeks to my granddaughter's graduation and I'm taking my K-30 and my small assortment of lenses w/us. My question or concern is what, if anything, do I have to worry in re: to going thru security and x-rays? Do I need to remove the battery or anything? Don't want to arrive in NC and find out everything is shot. Just would like some guidance if needed in preparing for the trip.

Received my B&H Newsletter this morning and lo and behold, here was the new Canon Rebel SL1 now available in white. I personally don't like the looks of it but found it interesting. Was that from their own think tank or are they wanting to tap into the color options that Pentax has offered and has created a market for? Inquiring minds want to know.

Bought a Pentax, got in WAY over my head

I understand your frustrations. I started with a Spotmatic II in 1972. I ended up taking a photography class in college and it taught me a lot but today's DSLRs are a different animal. I've had my K-30 for about 10 months now and love it. Do I understand it all??? No....not by a large margin. But don't give up. Here's a little story FWIW. My wife is very anal about technology. She can mess up the TV remote but I still love her. When I got my K-30 she said she'd stay with her Canon P&S. Well, when I showed her that if she kept it in Auto, the camera did the rest. We haven't used her P&S since. She isn't afraid of it and will volunteer to take pics sometimes. Don't be afraid to use the Auto mode. Use it and have fun. As you get more comfy with it, then go out an experiment but don't let all the new terminology and such scare you away. My daughter bought the book DSLRs for Dummies. Have seen it, haven't read it but she enjoyed it. I'm guessing it gives you a general overview of a DSLR and it's workings. Camera specific settings? Probably not, I don't know. But give it a try, I think it also has CD with it. Then watch this forum. You can get a ton of info from folks who've done this a lot longer than you or I have. Ask questions? Do what you need to. But don't get worked up and frustrated. It's a huge learning curve. You have a good brand in Pentax as most of the people here will attest. Go out and relax, let the camera do it for now and just have a good time. I've probably reiterated what many have already said but I didn't have time to read all the threads.

Today I received an e-mail from B&H stating the arrival of the new Nikon flagship, D4s. They also have just announced the new D5300 I think or something. My point is, you can still buy the D3000, 3100, 3200, D5000, D5100,5200 and now the 5300. And what are you getting? They are all just improvements on if not just minor improvements on the previous model plus now you have to decide which model you want to go with. To me I realize Pentax doesn't have the largest current lineup but it is a lot more consumer friendly from a purchase stand point. I like the fact that if I want the latest I don't have to decide between 5 other similar models which I, as a beginner, probably don't really understand the differences in the first place.Canon is similar like Nikon with the T1,T1i,T2i,3i,4i,and I think 5i plus the new SL1 or whatever it's called. Come on, retire the old ones or doesn't anyone realize you are making more than you can sell? Just my point and I was wondering if others see it this way or if I'm a black sheep gone astray. So glad I went w/Pentax.

Why Pentax

Mine are not unlike many already expressed. I started in 1971 w/a Spotmatic II purchased in Japan while in the military. Also bought a 28 and 135mm lens and all sorts of stuff. Back then as I remember it was Pentax, Nikon, Minolta, and maybe Canon. That camera served me well for close to 30 years. Bought a Nikon D3000 and had it for about 2 weeks in 2011 before I lost my job and had to return it. Never really got into it and to be honest had not seen a Pentax camera anywhere so didn't know they even existed. But the bug was still in me to get a good camera. Digital was the thing so there really wasn't any alternative. My wife had a Canon P&S and I hated it. She could use so I was happy!!! Then I stumbled on to Pentax again, how I don't quite remember but I did. Started reading and the more I read the more I liked. Was looking at the KR when low and behold the K-30 came out. Waited about 10 months before I pulled the trigger and though having purchased it sight unseen, I love it. I've gotten 3 more lenses....28MM 2.8, 50 1.4 and a 70-210. My only problem w/Pentax is market visibility. I have said it before, I believe if they put them out in the public eye, they couldn't keep up w/sales. I think there is that much difference, especially if they showed the color options, I think it would be a huge hit with the younger buyers. I love the looks and the feel and the pictures are fantastic. I also like the fact that I don't have to decide between 3 similar models within the same price group.....d3000,3100,3200 or d5000, 5100, 5200, & 5300. They are still selling those. I like that we have an entry level in the K500, a mid range in the k50 and now the K3 for the higher end. Just my thoughts.

Look @ Voice of Reason below. If you are new to the DSLR world, take your time. Put the darn thing in auto and just let the camera do the dirty work for you. Read the manual but don't try to absorb the whole thing. I wouldn't say the manual is real user friendly but it will help. Then after a couple weeks of just "fun" shooting, start to try the other options. Read threads here on the forum, ask questions (No question is too dumb) and things will slowly start to come together. My wife, bless her soul, is about as technically challenged as there is and she will use my K-30 if I have it in auto. She said the other day that she'll use the "big" camera instead of her Canon P&S because it takes better pictures. So don't let it get you down. You're probably trying to jump right in and be a pro before you learn how to just have fun. Give it some time. If you've had a K-30 and now have the K-50, you won't get much better than that from any other maker out there. Just go and have fun, experiment later, and then go see your Dr. for LBA......it is very contagious!!

I checked it at lunch and I misspoke. It is a Vivitar 70-210mm PK A/R Macro 4.5-5.6 Lens w/a Hoya 49mm filter. I picked it up for $19. No fungus, etc. Has a good feel to it. Didn't mean to mislead.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I've purchased a Hoya 70-210 and an Pentax 50 F1.4 and paid less than $70 for the both of them. So far so good. I'm no expert but I've been pleased so far. I'll take all your suggestions under my wing and see what happens. It's funny that you all mentioned the 28/50/&135 as the 28 I'm really looking for since I already have a good 50. Again, thanks to all of you.

Bought a K-30 and really love the camera. Came from the old school Asahi Pentax Spotmatic era so you know I'm not a young pup anymore. Back then we only had manual lenses and since I've gotten my K-30 I've purchases a couple lenses at a reasonable price but get confused when looking on ebay or craigslist when it comes to all the different brands out there. Can some of you more knowledgeable members give some direction as to what brands are usually good purchases and others to stay away from? I'm not looking for specific focal lengths and such. But you see brand names like Conicar, Focal, Sears, Albinar, Soligar and tons of others and one doesn't know if you purchase one of those names that you are getting something good or actually a piece of junk. I hope I'm not being too vague in my request. When one sees for instance a pentax 28mm f2.8 and it is under the name of promaster, or focal, or Gemini, I'm sure there are some brands that one would want to stay away from. Hope this makes sense. I've looked on the lens guides listing here and that has helped a lot but wondered if there is a general rule of thumb for some brands. Any help would be appreciated.
