White Pentax K-r with NEW NEVER USED 18-55 still with 2 months of warranty left.$400 or best offer.
Camera has less than 6000 shutter count, no scuffs or dings, and an excellent LCD screen that I had a screen protector on. I will try to add more contrast in. I shot in RAW so I know I can do that in post. I think what's hard is that she is white. My greyhound's features show more prominently whenever the two are together. I think white is just really hard for me as a beginner. Thanks!!!

Thanks! I have been trying to focus on her eyes to get it focus correctly. I just read my manual and figured out how to use AFS.C so I'm going to try that with my flash :D

D4rknezz, you hit the nail on the head. My concern was her head blending in with the sky, but I didn't think about it being because of her white hair! You're totally right that if she was black this would not be an issue. I will try to be much more aware of what's behind her when I try to take a photo. Looking at other photos- this was not a problem when I shot her against darker rocks...

Of course, she loves the mud so maybe it'll be better to take pics of her against the sky when she's a lovely mud shade :P

I am really new to photography so any advice is greatly welcome.

I feel like the lighting is weird in the photos. It was an overcast day and it just seems different from how I remember this day at the park. I felt like it was a lot brighter that day. I tried to fix this in post but I'm pretty unskilled.

I also missed focus on her nose in the second photo :p It's just hard catching her- I have lots of blurs! What shutter speeds do you suggest? I either can get it fast enough to get her but then it's very dark or too slow and blurs everywhere.

Any advice would be great! The park is pretty close so I have lots of chances to try again. Thanks!!!

Any US Based Pentax Repair Centers?

That is frustrating! From their website- you can find local repair shops who will service you IF they have the parts. If not, they will send it back to CRIS. At least it is nice to know you can have it checked by someone before deciding the ship it out. I went this route when my LCD screen started to malfunction. I didn't know if it was a weather thing or what and the shop told me to ship it in.

My K-r should be shipping back soon hopefully. Here is a timeline for others wondering about the turn around time for their parts in repair:

Received 8/8/2012
In Repair 8/9/2012
Parts Hold 8/13/2012
Parts Hold Back Order 8/16/2012
In Repair 9/17/2012

BH pay for Saturday Ground?
Posted By mcnugget

I ordered a 31mm as a present yesterday at 4pm. The estimated delivery table said end of day Friday for UPS Ground- so I went with that. Turns out, the cut off time is 4 and they shipped out the lens this morning with an estimated delivery date of Monday... This is a Sunday birthday present :(

I did some UPS Ground googling, and they do deliver on Saturdays if the company pays the extra for Saturday deliveries. Is there any hope for me that BH pays that extra?

Overall, I'm still a little upset- if cutoff time is at 4, at least my invoice should have changed over in the system to say Monday. I would have called and happily paid the extra money to get next day. Definitely learned my lesson to not listen to estimates.

Edit: I meant my order confirmation should have said Monday... since it was emailed at 4:01.

Hey Guys,

To close this thread up I wanted to say thanks so much for all of your advice! I realzed at the con that I spent much more time making new friends and having fun than I did behind the the camera. Albeit- I was mostly inhibited my my huge costume helmet head. Most of my shots were snapped super fast through live view but I'm really thankful for all your help! I am glad I ended up taking a backpack with everything!

the zoom was great for the parade!

and the 40 was on at some time

the fisheye was great for experimenting with fun characters

and overall, good times were had by all!

in case you couldn't tell- i'm the one in the cat helmet!

Which lens do I take with me to a convention?

Thanks for all the advice! I am going to be in costume, and I realized that I will probably only be taking photos outside. (I'm hoping others will be taking the photos of me inside the convention :P hehehehe) I am more apt to just bringing my 40 based on everyone's responses BUUUTTTT, I think I will just bring both. The 40 is smaller than a makeup palette I'm planning on bringing (total girl, I know) so I figure I can relieve any regrets by bringing both.

Another question- I can also borrow a Pentax 10-17 Fisheye from a friend who is not attending- would this be good to bring along/replace the 40?

Which lens do I take with me to a convention?

I am going to Dragoncon (a sci-fi convention) this weekend and am unsure of what lens to bring. Of course I would love to only have to bring one lens, but I know that taking pictures can be hard at conventions. Sometimes subjects are really close, sometimes they're super far away, and more often than not- the lighting conditions are not what you expected. I still consider myself a little bit farther along than a beginner but not an advanced user, and most of my lenses were acquired as gifts. I've only ever bought one lens- the 18-55 that came with my kit. That said, I'm unsure of which of the lenses I have would be best to bring? I've narrowed it down to these two:
  • Pentax DA 40mm F2.8mm XS Lens

  • Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Lens

I really love the 40mm/2.8 and use it almost exclusively, but I am worried about moving around to much to get the right focus in a convention hall. Is this a right concern? It's the fastest lens I have for when it can get quite dark. My Sigma is not as sharp as the DA and I can look at my pictures and instantly tell which photos were taken with the Sigma, but it also has that range. ;)

Thanks for your help!

Yeah! I kept looking at the post to see it say "refurbished" or something of the like but I'm pretty sure it's brand new. I think it's a great deal and thought to post it even though I have no need for one. Hopefully it makes someone really happy!

Strike a Pose Photo Deck

I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this but here goes!

At a large anime convention I went to recently there was a girl with a slide deck of cards (like playing cards) who would ask costumers to pick a card at random from the deck. On each card there was a stick figure in a certain pose, and she would ask the costumer to copy the pose for the picture. She posted her photos later, and I felt like she had a great variety in all her shots. I'd really like to try this as a project for an upcoming convention.

Is there a place I can buy/download a similar type of deck? I felt like it was something storebought and not homemade when she asked me to pick a card. I really regret not asking her in person :(

Thanks!

I ordered on Tuesday around 11am. UPS says it should be here by end of day tomorrow (Thursday)! Not sure where it is shipping from. When UPS updates I'll let you know. Free shipping for two-day turnover sounds too good to be true. I am in GA.

Hi! My name is Niki, and I'm from Atlanta, GA. I am a novice who has started photography as a more serious hobby after realizing my scrapbooking photos all seemed to look the same... no amount of stickers, glitter, and cutouts can hide bad picture after picture. :) I've enrolled in a local photography class, and have been a long time lurker of the forums but decided to finally join. :)
