Sorry for the poor phone snap, but I just got this setup today! $350 for the K-3, $220 for the 18-135. Can't wait to get back into shooting!

18-135 or 28-105

I'm glad to see so many opinions here. I think I've decided on the 18-135.

The big thing is that when I get the K-1 down the road, I may as well save up and spend the extra for the 2.8 zooms or something like that. It wouldn't be a walkaround, carry everywhere camera (I plan to keep the K-3 for that) so the size and weight wouldn't be an issue.

And for a lens to use on a rainy day, the extra range and not having to change lenses is a major plus. When conditions are better, I've already got a few non-WR lenses that will give me better IQ when conditions support it.

Plus, it's half the money, and I can use the leftover to save for other gear :)

Worth getting the Pentax 15mm HD if you have the Pentax 21MM lens already?

I used to have a 15mm LTD and I can honestly say that it's very much a specialty tool, but for what it does, it's FANTASTIC.

18-135 or 28-105

I've tried the 15mm Limited, but I passed it along to another user because I really didn't have the know-how to justify it. FANTASTIC little lens though.

The IQ thing is the big sticking point. I've had an 18-135 when I first got into shooting, but I sold it because I got into primes and the DA*s, and it, obviously wasn't as sharp or fast and I had unrealistic expectations of it. But I don't know if it'd be a good choice as just as "in-case-of-a-rainy-day" lens, or if I should get a nicer lens that I wouldn't mind using at other times as well, as I'm pretty impressed with what I'm seeing from the 28-105.

18-135 or 28-105

I just picked up a K-3 (getting back into photography and wanted a nice WR camera for not too much) and now I'm wondering which walkaround WR lens to get.

I know I plan to pick up a K-1 at some point, but I'm not sure if I should get the 28-105 and use it on both, or go with something a little wider for APS-C and just pick up a lens for the K-1 when I pick it up.

I often hear people suggest the 16-85 or 18-135 on APS-C due to the wider low end. That said, I don't often use wide angle. I'm not sure if that's because I don't have a good one, or if it's because my brain doesn't think that way. But my K55/1.8 and 50-135 pretty much lived on my K-30 before I sold it and the 50-135, and I only occasionally wished for a bit wider.

The 18-135 seems to be significantly cheaper used.

Any thoughts?

Though it's not my camera going around, I think that that would be a neat momento from the land down under.
I'm still trying to decide what I'll do when it gets to my stop on its journey.

Decided to sell some gear and pick up this beauty. (The lens didn't come with it but was only $5 at the pawn shop. Couldn't really say no to that.)

Sorry for the poor cell phone snap. I changed phones and now I'm trying to learn how this one handles things.

Those are gorgeous cars, and I think that the Lomo 100 suits them very well. I might end up using Lomo films more often, seeing the results in this thread. (And it's cheap lol)

Item Description
Hello! I'm selling my abused K-30 I've had since 2012.

It's ugly and a bit damaged. It's been just about everywhere with me, and it shows. I overestimated Pentax durability a few times.

It's missing the diopter adjustment and flash popup button. Both were covered by hot glue as it sealed it and I was poor at the time it happened (no warranty coverage since it was my fault) and I haven't had time or a need to fix it. I don't use the popup flash. And the battery catch is broken, but the door does work fine.

The flash can be pried up, but won't fire (battery depleted warning)
The sensor could use a cleaning, but I don't trust myself to do so, and at wider apertures, it's not much of an issue.

Beyond those issues, it works fine. And many of my for sale posts on this site are taken with this camera.
Shutter count is 14,192
Includes AA adapter and S type focusing screen from focusingscreen.com (hence the perhaps high price)

Am I missing something regarding the MZ-S?

I agree on the aperture rings part. I'll use lenses without them, but I like them. Maybe that's just because most of the lenses I have with them are gorgeous Takumars and K lenses....

Oh of course not. I just don't quite get why the MZ-S is valued so high. Or why it chucked features, that came on Pentax cameras released years before, out the window.

Yeah, whereas the PZ-1 mentioned by others in this thread has only one AF point, it's got faster flash sync with standard flashes, a faster max shutter speed, a slightly faster winder, and dual dials for proper manual control without aperture rings. (And is less than $100, whereas a MZ-S seems to hover around $250 and with a winder, $400) The MZ-S isn't bad, but is a weird bundle of design decisions.

My point on the flash was, barring the HSS modes, (which I know it has) the sync speed is slower than other flagship cameras, So without Pentax flashes, it's a little more limited than other cameras, IMO. And it was my understanding that you can't shoot M or Av(?) without the aperture ring?

Gotta agree with both of these points. In most cases, Pentax cameras are super easy to use and are quite comfortable.

That's a very good point on the prices. Perhaps what I mean to say is that they're valued the same now, were at similar places in each brand's lineup at around the same time, yet had quite different capabilities. You look at Canon, Nikon, and Minolta; all pushing big, super spec'd cameras while Pentax went a completely different route for their top-of-the-line camera, opting instead for size and ergonomics. I find that kind of interesting.

And yeah, I suppose most people wouldn't buy an MZ-S or F5/6 as a first camera today (or back then) and would already have lenses if they were buying either, though I'd be interested to know the thoughts on the MZ-S from those weird types who do have more than one system. Being one of those who toys with multiple, that's what started this entire search and line of thought.

The biggest one seems to be general flash sync (not HSS modes for Pentax flashes) being 1/180th rather than at least 1/250th (not much, but still,) limited functionality with lenses without aperture rings, and a much slower winder. And I hate CR2 batteries.

Before anyone thinks I'm suggesting that the MZ-S is a bad camera, I'm not. It just seems like you can get a bit more camera for the same money with the other brands, at least for cameras of that time.

That said, an MZ-S is still on my wishlist.

So, recently, just for giggles, I've been looking at the top of the line film cameras for each manufacturer, and I can't say I really get the MZ-S.

It's gorgeous, and small, but seemingly nowhere near as high spec as other offerings of the time. For about the same price as an MZ-S, you can get just about any other top-tier camera from the time, and have better specs and similar durability. And the accessories for the MZ-S seem to be quite rare and costly themselves.

MZ-S owners/users, is there something I'm missing that would make this a better buy than, say, a Nikon F5 or Minolta Alpha 9? (Barring the expectation that one already has lenses for any of them, of course)

I hadn't ever even thought of the Z-1, but it does sound pretty good on paper. Do you have any pictures or info on your powergrip?

Every time I see the MZ-S, I can't help but respect its design. It's a gorgeous tanky looking camera. Definitely on the wishlist.

Can't fault the M42 bodies. Or the lenses. Both are great, yet many discount them just because they're older, or because they "lack" automatic features. I've got a Spotmatic SP I need to restore that I'll never sell. (My media production teacher gave it to me, with a bunch of lenses, for free, purely because he knew I liked Pentax. Best teacher ever?) Anyway, it's a lovely camera.

Lots of interesting thoughts here, and lots of LX, MX, and KX.

I've heard that said of wide angle many times. And I can see it in the shots people get with them, I just can't seem to think any wider than about 40-50mm

Nothing wrong with plastic cameras if they get the shot.

That's a good looking shot! And a black KX is certainly on my wishlist, though I have a KX I need to send in to Eric.

That MX with M40/2.8 would certainly be compact!

While the controls are a bit clumsy, I find myself loving the ME Super. Just a nice solid little camera.

K2 is an interesting choice. Don't see them much.

Both good choices, and I gotta say, the Hasselblad is gorgeous.

The K1000 SE is a nice looking camera. And of course very capable.

Having a KX and K55/1.8, I'd say that'd still not be a bad choice.

I like Leica, but my wallet could never justify it

The KX is certainly easy to read. I'd imagine the MX system would work very similarly to the other M series cameras, in which case, it works, but it's not the most pleasing to use.

Hello! I figure this may have already been asked, but it couldn't hurt to ask again....

If you guys had to pick just one film body and lens, what would they be, and perhaps more importantly, why?
Obviously, there's likely to be a preference for Pentax here, but if there's another brand, feel free to say too.

I won't lie, I have a bit of an ulterior motive to ask, as I'll only be able to reasonably bring one body after I leave for school for about the next 6 months until I get back home.
