Very nice detail. It seems those old lenses work after all.

I have never understood the bias against the 50/f2 since I could never fault its performance myself. Perhaps a snobbishness due to its fewer optics and lower price influences some. Every bit of extra glass is a another potential source for reflections and errors. (A Tessar lens has only four lenses in 3 sets and does a stirling job as long as one stays within its limitations). It seems most comparisons concentrate on the extreme capabilities of lenses, when in real life 90% of use lies in the middle.

Excellent pictures. It seems you don't accept that you must have the latest gear in order to be able to take wonderful pictures. Good work.

Wonderful collection. It helps that you are proficient at servicing them. The earlier S series are also lovely, but curtains are old, and I think hard to find. I have some SVs a mint "K" serviced by Erik, but it too has lost a curtain strap dried out fabric and glue.

I think you can fix that. Unscrew the retaining screw which has two holes in it. Use some pointy needle nose plyers, or a compass divider to fit in the holes. Once off, lift the lever off and see if you can put in back on in a different position to straighten it to vertical.

There is the danger of mindsets brought up in the throwaway generation. Looking for a cheaper way to make something through the use of modern materials and technology is loaded with pitfalls. I would not exchange my 2010 Audi Quatro for the newest model for this reason. A Mercedes (or BMW) made in the eighties was longer lasting than modern versions which have constant electronic "upgrades". After 10 years all the electronics are outdated and likely to fail, and when they do, good luck finding a ten year old computer module.
My hope is that they avoid camera electronics as much as possible for this reason. There is a tactile satisfaction in relating to wheels and cogs compared to circuit boards - even my watches have gears and springs. After all, the whole point of a mechanical camera is the it is mechanical.

Actually, without information about the distance involved, one can't fully assess the performance of the lenses. That is why I shot at various ranges from six to twelve miles. One has to make allowances for the distances involved, and compare them to the same lens being used on a larger format. After all, the outstanding feature of the Q is it's pulling distance, so it is interesting to see just how far and how well it pulls. One needs to compare the alternatives. Here is a comparison I found on Flicker. schldkröteda300k5q | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
This is the comment below the pictures:
The picture with the Q ist the left one.
In both cases a DA* 300 was used.
This means even an expensive tele lens like the new pentax da 560 cannot beat the Pentax Q / DA 300 combo !!!!

Just to add to the information, I checked my 4096519 MX and it has the brass colour metal cogs. I wonder if the plastic was used with the last run, perhaps substituting components from another line of models.

In flight, trim is used to relieve the holding pressure on the controls, so that one can remove hands or feet from the controls, and the plane will continue in the desired path. On the first generation airliners, trims were manual, usually knobs or wheels. If one had a failed engine, rudder trim was dialed in to take the pressure off the leg holding against the asymmetry. When landing, the non-flying pilot would gradually centre the trim in keeping with the reducing power on the flare..

Just remember that to use the Tac on a DSLR, the lens should be in the manual position, otherwise it will remain wide open no matter what you set on the lens. The camera can then be set on Av or Program. You can use camera 'manual' but then you have to push the green button for a speed. This is not required on P or Av.
Bayonet lenses are another matter, as they have no manual position. Here 'manual' is required to be set on the camera in order for the camera to stop down the lens to the aperture selected.

I noticed that it was not possible to switch between manual and auto when my S-M-C was on my Spotmatic F, but would work on my Spotmatic. After going back and forth, the reason became clear, The later Spotmatic F had a recess next to the thread opening, and the pin fell into this rather than be pressed in. Why they wanted this feature to lock it into auto, I don't know. * (see below) You have to unscrew the lens to change over, and then holding the pin in.
* Basically the reason seems to be that they wanted to prevent going to manual when you had an open meter camera like the F and later models. I notice that in Auto, one doesn't have to switch on the light meter, it reads light when the lens cover is removed. If one were able to inadvertently select Manual it would throw confusion into metering.

A common problem with the ME Super. The ME seems to have avoided this. My advice is to shun old cameras that depend on electronics, as they are trouble prone. Look for pure mechanical models such as Spotmatics, Km, KX, MX,
