PC Magazine-Pentax K-3 III Monochrome earns Editor's Choice for B&W Cameras

Yup, I am not that interested in B&W myself, but I can really see how this would be a great product for those who are, esp. if it gives more B&W editing headroom, and as you say better tonality that cannot be achieved in PP.

And Pentax once again prove themselves a "photographer's company". The market is shrinking due to capable phone cameras and I think this enthusiast angle is the right way to go. Only concern is the small lens selection and limited 3rd party options.

Good video. It shows how there really is a difference in the "raw" data, which gives real world benefits when shooting B&W and definitely not just a gimmick.
Would have liked to see comparisons between high ISO B&W native and converted B&W from color K3iii, and see how they differ.

Just thinking, wouldn't files from color K3iii have some PP advantages on laborating with looks, as you could let different color channels have different weight in brightness etc. in conversion. Which I imagine would be hard to replicate with the files from B&W K3iii, as there is no RGB information available? Like color K3iii would have an advantage if you want to play with the black and white "looks" in PP, but the B&W gives a better image, but a balanced, neutral B&W image, unless you use physical filters on camera?

I see the reason in what the article mentions, how removing the Bayer filter could improve light gathering abilities and make a difference.

But still trying to understand if this concept actually give (noticably) better B&W photos / raw images, compared with shooting with a regular dSLR and converting them, or if it is more like "I always convert most everything to grayscale anyway, so why not"?

Yeah, and the blue color of their wings is almost luminescent, especially when in flight. Photos can't really capture that aspect.

One of our prettiest native birds birds, if you ask me.

I read in old posts there are some problems with bounce exposure with recent Metz flashes. Has this been fixed in firmware for 52/64?

Does the AF360FGZII have the auto thyristor mode? I thought only 540 had that mode?

Thanks for all suggestions, will read more thoroughly and ponder a bit :)

Metz 52 or 64 for Pentax K30 (& K20D)

Hi!

I'm looking to buy a flash for my old K30 and older K20D. Will possibly upgrade to camera KP or upcoming APS-C camera at some point.

Shooting mostly family and kids, sometimes macro. Would be great if flash can work (semi) automatically with old K/M lenses or M42 lenses. I think Metz 64 has an "A" setting that could be used?

Metz 64 is almot twice the price and might be too large, but if the A setting makes using flash with old lenses much easier it might be worth it.

All input would be appreciated. I actully once had read up on all possible flash options and decided to go for the Metz 58, but never pulled the trigger. And it seems to be discontinued now...

Sensor resolution that makes sense on FF and cost

Ideally, it would not be above 16 - 24 MP, imho.

  • Smaller file size, it is already hard / expensive keeping good backups of 16 - 24 MP RAW files from k-5 / K-3.

  • Less data for camera to handle, could possibly make camera faster than the competition or less expensive with same performance.

  • possibly better DR and/or high ISO noise performance.

The zoom, use in TAv mode.

FA50, good for birthday portraits, but too long for indoor party shots.

A35, FL works for indoor party, but would not want a MF lens for kids birthday party shots.

Metz 52, 58 or 64 for analog TTL camera?

Thanks, I was waiting for the Metz 64, but maybe the 58 is a better choice. Time will tell.

Do you know if the 64 is going to replace the 58, or if they will coexist?

Hi guys,

Can you advice me if Metz 52, 58 or 64 would work in TTL or auto mode with my PZ-1p?

I am thinking of getting a cheap old TTL flash on ebay, but as I am also planning to get one of the Metz models for my dSLRs, maybe it is better to save my funds for a flash unit that would work on both systems.

I am a bit torn on the design of the camera, what bothers me more is they stepped away from having all dSLRs in their lineup weather protected.

But it looks to deliver great images, PENTAX K-S1 - RICOH IMAGING EUROPE S.A.S

From what I read the Fuji "kit lens" isn't a kit zoom as in what we expect from Canon/Nikon/Sony and even Pentax. To say it looks very decent is an understatement. And the more expensive 18-55 is reportedly even better,

Then, their 35 + 56mm primes combined with fuji sensors really is something I need to think about.

Would have been interesting seeing what HD's rounded blades would have done with Christmas style point light bokeh shots.

Good review, wish I had funds now to get the SMC 15mm before it goes out of production.

Quality of old telephoto primes?

Using my old M42 Vivitar 200mm f3.5 generally give much sharper indoor sport shots compared to when I use DA50-200mm.

Two reasons,

1. I think Viv 200 is quite a bit sharper than DA50-200 @ same aperture, have not done any formal tests to confirm this.
2. @ 200 mm DA50-200 is f5.6 wide open compared to f3.5 for Viv200. If using same sensor sensitivity you get longer exposures. More blurry shots if moving subjects.

I would not expect a Pentax smc lens to do worse than the Viv200.

But outdoors with more light I more often choose the DA50-200. You can stop down a step or two, get reasonably sharp images and better contrast and less flare than what you would get with an old prime.

Also, Pentax old smc primes at ~ 100mm+ are excellent, no discussion. But if you don't need the name and SMC, you could also get a Vivitar, Ozeki or some russian135mm f2.8 for less money and still with very good IQ.

PDCU 4 raw adjustments database

Hi Dan,

Yes, I think I was one of those you tried to assist. I suspect it might either have something to do with XP and Vista/Win7 having user Application Data in different locations, or the fact that I customized my XP to have Appdata in a different location than the default one.

Good to have it working and saving changes, as I think it gives better colour than other RAW developers out of the box.

Hi Arrvon,

Yes, it saves the changes made for each picture in this database, so you can go back and make changes to picture adjustments you made in previous sessions.

For some reason I never got this working correctly when running Windows XP, but after switching to Win7 it actually saves the adjustments made to pictures, in between sessions.

I think application settings and layout settings are stored in the two .INI files in the same directory, but I have not investigated that further.

Maybe this info can be useful to someone else as well.

Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4 (4.35) store the changed settings for RAW files in

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Pentax\Digital Camera Utility 4\PTXUTL.mdb

This might be useful if you would like to make a backup of your PDCU4 RAW adjustments before reinstalling windows, replacing computers, etc.

I did a quick test moving the file (PDCU recreated PTXUTL.mdb file), no RAW changes left when reopening PDCU. I then copied the file back into the directory, my old adjustments were back as they were before.

The PTXUTL.mdb file actually seems to be a working MS ACCESS database file:
