Wow...haven't checked in on this page in over a year and it's still going strong...cool!

Here's a quick one - 57 image Brenizer stitch (Sigma 50/D700)

http://www.mephotography.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/webbokehpano-1_stitch(pp_w639_h639).jpg

I'm going to spend some time this evening reading back and checking out how the past year has gone!

Loved reading and catching up on all the D800 shots here! Looks like a lot of you are having some good fun!

Here's a couple from an engagement shoot I did a few days ago. Taken with the "lowly" D700... ;)

P.S. Apologies in advance for lack of sharpness and wonky colour variance in the images...whenever I upload here the images take a bit of a turn for the worse. The colour/clarity/sharpness is consistent in the original set.

Gotta agree about the FA77...it's my favourite lens ever, I love the way it rendered. If I could butcher one to use on Nikon i would...

The quality of bokeh of the 1.4D is much creamier than the 1.8D's busy bokeh. The 1.8D is still a great lens and a great value, but the increase in price to the 1.4D does have it's impacts on image quality. That being noted, the 1.8D is plenty sharp wide open.

If you have all those primes you mustn't be afraid to walk a little when shooting, so I suspect that the Tamron doesn't bring anything to the table. 75mm to your 85mm would be negligable, but 28mm to 35mm would be a very drastic difference (on FF) - that's all you would gain.

Keep an eye on Ebay, they come up reguarly for that price. Make sure you get the one with the aperture dial (older version), as the newer version doesn't have one and is reportedly not as good.

Do a search on this site and you'll find discussions about this. I think JSherman had a thread on this about a year or so back.

Also, unless you are married to the idea of the 85mm, I'd skip it. It's a great lens, but not a wow lens. I'd recommend the Sigma 50/1.4 for about the same price - it's a wow lens (APS-C, or FF)

Not to pick on your posts, but no company makes a poor quality FF camera - all are top performers. There's a reason that the tech in FF is what dribbles down to the APS-C market usually a generation, or two, later.

I can think of many APS-C cameras right now that are substandard. In fact, the reason many people on this forum ask the question you posted above is because there are so many substandard crop cameras that don't compare well to Pentax's offerings.

Don't kid yourself though... The current gen of FF cameras are all very high quality in usability, features, sensor, speed of AF, accuracy of AF, and customization.

The 85mm f/1.8 D is a FX, or full frame lens and retails around $400.
You might be thinking of the 85mm f/1.4. It retails for much higher. If the OP is looking to go this route I'd suggest the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 instead. It's a hell of a lens and can be had around $850 used.

As for needing a FF vrs a crop camera...everything doesn't have to do with just the sensor. Have you used a D700 before? Have you used a D300(s)? Both cameras are excellent, but the handling characteristics of the D700 is miles ahead of the D300(s). It's not all about the sensor, not by a looooong shot.

Your statement is maybe true if you are talking about old legacy MF lenses.

In the AF world Nikon has more lenses, some of the best lenses in existence, and as I've noted in my statement above - you can put a FF lens kit together for the same price as you can with Pentax.

Sell the works and buy a D700 in about a months time when they will sell for $2000 new. Supplement it with a 50mm 1.8 to get you started.

FF lenses do not need to be expensive. Here's my current kit:

Sigma 50/1.4...500 (new)
Sigma 70-200...750 (used)
Tamron 28-75...250 (used)
Nikon 60mm macro...400 (new)

Find me a Pentax kit that is similar that costs less than that and gives you FF coverage and superb IQ.

By the way all these lenses perform spectacularly on the Nikon D700's that I have.

Food for thought...

That sucks about the DP2 :(

What Sigma EX lenses did you have that had questionable quality?

Just curious, is your opinion based on personal experience, or from what you've read/heard from others on the interweb? I've now owned quite a number of Sigma EX lenses and all have been great for me.

The only one I've ever returned was a Sigma 50 in Pentax mount. I switched to Nikon and the lens was still within my return window, so I swapped it for the same lens in Nikon.

Cool! While many purists would scoff at not using first party lenses, I say damn them! Sigma make great lenses for a fraction of the cost.

Personally, I'm enamored by the Sigma line of lenses. I've tried the Sigma 50 / Sigma 70 / Sigma 85 / Sigma 70-200 on FF and all are amazing. When I shot Pentax I used the Sigma 30 / Sigma 50 / Sigma 70 and they were great on crop frame also. I shoot almost exclusively wide open and I love the bokeh of the Sigma line.

Pick your favourite FF and Sigma it up!

Glad you like the set bossa, and thanks for your comments. The couple are very pleased with them.

The Sigma 70-200 is such an excellent lens - It single handedly changed me from a primarily prime shooter to a zoom shooter. It's IQ at 2.8 is awesome, it focuses really quick (stellar in continuous mode too), and it is absolutely silent. The only downside is that it is large and takes time to get used to it's heft. On the bright side though, when people see me using the 70-200 they clear out of my way (this session was at a public park that was full of people at the time). Free crowd control :)

What Will your New Camera Do For You?

I purchased a second D700 last week for the upcoming year.

I don't want it to do anything my other D700 doesn't already do, but I do want to have the same sensor in my cameras so that when my wife and I shoot sessions together the images don't need extra PP work to make the session look seamless. I'm tired of fighting with the images to make them look consistent when different cameras were used.

Two sessions in already and the PP was consistent and a total breeze for both!
