50mm vs 24mm

Field of View depends on both focal length and sensor size. I believe those cameras have several different sensor sizes, and thus different fields of view, even if they have the same focal length.

24mm is only "normal" field of view on a sensor smaller than APS-C.

All Pentax DSLRs have APS-C sized sensors, so a "normal" lens is closer to 35mm.

Interestingly, many people find a slightly wider angle view to be a little more natural looking than actual human field of view. Also, it gives you some room to crop.

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Sigma A 28-70/2.8 with caps & hood (manual focus)

Asking Price
120.00 USD

Item Location
PA (United States)

Item Description
Sigma A 28-70/2.8 manual focus constant aperture zoom lens.

Optical: Very nice. Some dust/particles as expected. No scratches on glass. No fungus or haze. Nothing that should affect IQ.

Mechanical: Aperture is clean and fully functioning. Zoom and focus rings operate correctly. I hesitate to call them "smooth", but I doubt they're any worse than most other copies of this lens. I have occasionally had a problem with the aperture on this lens, where the camera thinks the max aperture is 4 (or 5.6) instead of 2.8. This affects modes where you let the camera set the aperture, or use the camera's dial to set the aperture. If the issue occurs, the camera will not set the aperture wider than f/4. It still works just fine if you use the aperture ring. I haven't had the problem with every camera I tried it with. You can read more about it here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/238833-sig...e-problem.html

Cosmetic: This lens has definite signs of use and wear. There are scratches and other marks on the barrel. It exhibits some of the old Sigma lens stickiness, but it really isn't all that bad.

See pictures. In the image with the open aperture, the color is the rope behind the lens, not haze or discoloration on the lens.

Blurb: Save 30% on Photo Books this Holiday Season

I've been planning to put together a few books through Blurb for a while. If you compare prices of 20 page books (minimum), they aren't that great, but they're by far the cheapest if you want to make a longer book (e.g. 80 pages), at least among those I compared. I haven't gotten around to it yet, because those long books are a lot of work!

OTOH, I recently got a 20 page book from York Photo (through a Living Social deal), and it was much better than I expected, given what I paid for it (which was next to nothing). It reinforced my initial thought that 20 pages is *really* small.

Next step up from Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8?

I would like to reiterate a few of the other comments: The Canon/Nikon shooters most likely don't have better lenses, they probably have better cameras (Full Frame sensors capable for capturing more light, and thus having less noise at high ISO). If they're shooting with a Rebel T4i and getting better results than you are with your Pentax K-30, either you need to work on your technique, or your equipment is faulty.

The K-30 does well on ISO noise. Especially for an APS-C camera.

If you need more reach, you want a Sigma or Tokina 100-300/4, but they're quite rare, and I'm not 100% sure they were made in Pentax mount. Alternatively, there's the option of 300/2.8 prime, but that can be limiting unless you're way back from the action, and they're crazy expensive. Oh, I guess the DA* 60-250/4 also has a little more reach than the 70-200, but I'm not sure it's worth the loss of f/2.8.

If you don't need more reach, then your glass is pretty much as good as theirs. *Very* few zooms lenses go wider than f/2.8, and, likewise, *very* few primes above 135mm go wider than f/2.8. The ephemeral "image quality" difference won't cause the huge difference you're describing.

Lenses mountable on Pentax APS-C bodies?

That's funny. I'm a bit of a Yashica collector, so I actually own a few Yashica camera manuals, but I must admit, I've never read any of them! (Aside from the part where it tells you which incredibly rare battery you need).

I can test both of these lenses on a K-x and/or K30, if people are interested. Of course there are different versions even within the DX line, so it isn't a catch-all.

Oddly, I've had Yashinon lenses that fouled the mirror of some Yashica m42 film SLRs. It's a little bit crazy.

They really do produce nice images, though.

K-30 two lens kit contents?

I went back to the store and checked the other kit they had. Indeed, there was no hood in it.

It seems I may have received a hood for a lens I don't have. I suppose the hood is more valuable than the lens cap I'm missing. Does anyone want to trade the DA L 18-55 hood for a 18-55 WR hood, assuming that's what it is? I'll snap some pics of it when get the chance.

The camera did come with over 400 clicks on it, so "open box" clearly means "returned". Or maybe floor model.

EDIT: I've confirmed that this is the hood for the 18-55WR (PH-RBC).

K-30 two lens kit contents?

TL;DR: Does the non-WR K30 two lens kit (18-55 & 50-200) include two hoods or one? Is that hood really difficult to attach/detach, or is there something wrong with the one we got?

I tried to look this up on the internet, but I couldn't find the answer for two reasons: 1) There are apparently LOTS of different K-30 kits and 2) The parts I'm interested in seem to be considered part of the lenses in the kit, rather than the kit itself.

I recently got a ridiculously good deal on an "open box" Pentax K-30 two lens kit (18-55 and 50-200, DAL, not WR). It was missing one lens cap, and only included one hood. I'm fine with the missing cap, I can replace it easily enough.

The bigger questions I have are, has anyone else bought this exact kit before?
Did it include two hoods, or just one?
Is the included hood extremely frustrating, or is ours broken? It seems to have a very different kind of bayonet than the hood that came with our K-x kit, despite the fact that that hood works just fine on the new lens. The hood in the box is definitely a Pentax hood -- it says "PENTAX" on it, and it has the little door to work with a CPL. It doesn't seem to mount correctly either forward or backwards on either lens, but is not obviously damaged either.

Sorry, I can't post pics right now, I don't have it with me at the moment.

For Sale - Sold: Contax 139 camera and Zeiss + Yashica lenses
Posted By thornburg

Pics coming tomorrow (Sunday), if they haven't sold before that.

Available as a package or individually.

Contax 139 35mm camera body, has dents and dings, appears to be fully working (shutter, meter, etc), but I haven't had any film developed from it. $50

Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 lens, shows wear, has a small nick in the coating on the rear element, and the filter (55mm Canon UV) does not want to separate from the lens. There is also a small hair inside the lens. It is possible to remove the entire beauty ring (with filter attached) in order to shoot without the filter. Glass is in great shape, no fungus, etc. Aperture is clean and fully operational. $300

Yashica ML 24mm f/2.8 lens, appears to be in great shape. Glass is clean & clear--no fungus, and I haven't seen any scratches. Aperture is clean and fully working. As with any old lens, there's some dust inside, but I can't find any other flaws. It's not "mint", but fully operational, and in very good cosmetic condition. $280

Individual prices are plus shipping.

$550 for the set, with free shipping in the US.

Payment by PayPal, unless you're close enough for cash on local pickup.

Also available, two Yashica FX series bodies, with Yashica 50mm f/1.9 lenses (these seem to have an aperture problem).

IMO, testing at f/8 is a little silly.

If all your shots were taken at f/8, then there's no need for f/4 or f/2.8 lenses.

KEH has the Zenitar for under $200. It is a fisheye, but not super bendy on APS-C.

They sometimes turn up the Rokinon/Samyang/et al lenses at reasonable prices too.

You're not supposed to directly compare test results taken with different cameras.

If the highest score on a Pentax camera is from the DA* 55/1.4, then that's the best Pentax lens that they've tested.

I forgot about that one. Which is odd, since I own one.

The Vivitar/Cosina/Phoenix/etc 100mm f/3.5 macro can legitimately be purchased for $100 or less, without requiring too much luck.

Any other AF prime (for Pentax) that I'm aware of costs more than $100 unless you get lucky.

Item for Sale
Third-party screwmount lens sale, imperfect but take great pics m42

Asking Price
25 USD

Item Location
Pennsylvania (United States)

Item Description
I have a pile of screwmount lenses. Tons, really. I only use a handful of them, so I'm offering the rest up here.

Many of these lenses have flaws, which is why I've marked the listing as "damaged". Some of the lenses would grade higher than that if listed individually.

If you're interested in any particular lens(es), just PM me (or reply), and I'll be happy to post pics of that lens, and/or sample pics taken with it.

Every lens here takes decent pics unless I specify otherwise. It may have dust, minor scratches, light haze, etc, but still takes nice pictures.

Assume they're all a bit dusty and have cosmetic wear--they're OLD.
If I don't mention the aperture, it's dry and snappy.
They generally don't include caps unless otherwise stated.

Prices are plus shipping, but negotiable, especially if you buy multiple. The $25 on the listing was just a randomly choses price, since it turned my range (15-65) into $1565.

On to the list:

Auto Sears 135mm f/2.8
missing inspection sticker
$40

Auto Vivitar 135mm f/2.8 (silver nose & band)
very small impact mark on front element
$40

Uniphot Auto Tele 135mm f/2.8
oil on blades, but works well
$30

Yashica Auto Yashinon-DX 200mm f/4
some kind of very slight haze inside, looks like it might be cleaning marks on inner elements?
$40

Yashica Auto Yashinon-DX 35mm f/2.8 (silver band)
focus and aperture rings a bit stiff, small dent in lip of focus ring
$65

Carenar 35mm f/2.8
aperture ring a bit stiff
includes original screw in front cap, and rear cap (unsure if original)
I think I have the box somewhere
$40

auto mamiya/sekor 50mm f/2
generally well worn
$20

Fuji Photo Film Co. Fujinon 55mm f/2.2
dusty
$25

Yashica Auto Yashinon-DS 50mm f/1.7
scratches on rear element
aperture pin feels a bit mushy, but blades respond well
$25

Yashica Auto Yashinon-DX 50mm f/1.7 (silver nose)
a few larger dust particles
includes original front push-on cap
$45

Auto Vivitar Wide-Angle 28mm f/2.5 (serial starts 22 = Kiron)
very nice condition
includes original front & rear caps
i think I have the original box somewhere
$60

Asahi Opt Co Auto-Takumar 55m f/1.8 (I know it's not 3rd party)
well worn, coloring on beauty ring (some letters look red?)
aperture ring extremely stiff
A/M switch extremely stiff
aperture does not operate correctly, but looks clean
$15

It's going to eBay soon if no one here wants it.

I've had zero problems with it. I'm only selling it because I recently acquired a 100mm macro and can't justify keeping both.

I have located the hood. It will be included in the sale.

I had to do some internet digging to make sure it was the right one, because it's an unmarked screw-in hood (which is probably how it became separated from the Macro in the first place), but I found a site that shows pictures, and it is the same hood.

Is Sigma weakening support for Pentax?

I'm a multi-system photographer, and I've been reading about the new Sigma 24-105/4 Art lens.

Today, I was pointed to this page: Sigma 24-105 specs.

Notice that Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Sigma mounts will be produced. No mention of Pentax.

I'm wondering if it's because it's a full frame lens, and Pentax doesn't sell a full frame camera.

Either way, does anyone have more information about this? Comments, opinions?

Are most of your shots handheld?

If so, be aware that weight can present a serious issue with "fast" long lenses.

I think in terms of f/2.8 lenses, a 200mm prime or 210mm zoom is probably the limit for hand holding during an event or a session longer than 10 minutes.

These lenses weigh about 3 pounds, which doesn't sound like much, but it's a lot to be holding steady for any length of time.

A 300mm f/2.8 lens is going to weigh around 5 pounds, which will wear you out much faster.

At 300mm you might need to look for an f/4 lens, which is back down to about 3 pounds.

None of those are really cheap, but you can save up for them. If you're getting paid work, it should only take a few jobs to cover the cost of a used 700-200/2.8 or 300/4.

Has it been suggested yet in this thread that you could try renting? There are several good lens rental places on the internet. LensRentals, BorrowLenses, CameraLensRental, etc. (I've never used any of these places, I've only read other people's experiences).

This would let you try out several things, and see what will work well for your specific situation. It will, unfortunately, cost as much as "cheap" lens to rent a nice one.
