ISO newbie

Hi all!
I've been trying to practice off and on all summer and was reasonably successful on my trip to the United Kingdom and even got a few Puffin shots. BUT very amateur struggles are my routine. I have the k30 and I can never understand the relationship between ISO and aperture and shutter speed. I kept having to set the ISO way too high I am sure. Like 600, 800, even 1200 to get anything to work. Maybe I'll attach some shots, but I'm kind of chicken :(
We have no photography classes anywhere near here so I just find what I can online over the years.
Thanks!

Really awesome insight DSims! I just have to decide what I am capable of dragging around England with me, no hubby packhorse this trip ;) but I'm sure it will be worth it if I just get a few shots worth having :)
Also, what kind of filter do you recommend? I really don't know about polarizing or UV. I'm not even going to pretend to know about them...
Thanks a ton!

So...DSims, which do you prefer, the DA 18-135 or the DA 50-135? The parade shots are gorgeous! What did you PP theses with if I may ask?And I love the dance pics, all the emotion comes through.
I am starting to feel capable of a good decision !!!

Well, I have a bridge Fuji, 35mm Nikon( never use), and a newer Digital Samsung ST150 tiny pocket camera.
I am bringing my pocket one and the K30, the only lens I have is the 18-55 kit.

The trip is kind of once in a lifetime, in that I will not be rushed by children to set up my shots etc and renting a car to go where I want. I dream of pictures of cottages and villages of thatched roofs, just really want to be proud of myself with some good pics! The puffins are an opportunity I do not want to miss and London for interesting architecture shots.

The hockey/soccer pics right now are non existent so any decent ones I could get would be a score ;)

Here I go again, and I thank you all for your help and guidance :)

Still deciding on a lens or two for my k30. I am planning for it to be "the" lens for me, to last 20 years. I am planning a trip to Europe, but I would like to use a smaller more discreet but versatile lens for London. Maybe a wider for landscape and country?
I need a zoom for the bird sanctuary (puffins) but I am also soccer/hockey mom who wants to get better game pics.
Yes I am learning, I don't know a lot, but I am trying and I don't want to make a bad decision with the budget I have saved so long for ;)

I had hoped to get two lenses for the range of under 1500.00

My list I have been booking up on, need ideas for wide angle/landscape though!
sigma 70-200 or 120-400
DA 60-250
DA 55-300

What makes the DA 60-250 so much more $$$$ ?

When trying to decide on a new lens or two, I have a hard time understanding why the DA 60-250 is SO much more $ than the 55-300. I was hoping to purchase two lenses for the price of the 60-250.

Also, will either one be enough length for bird shots?

Thanks!

After thinking more about my budget, I think the 60-250 is going to break my budget. I think I would like to buy a couple of lenses for the money.
The mentions of the 55-300 have me thinking...any thoughts????

I wasn't really planning the city shots with the big lens, mainly for the rural scenery and small villages, and we have a bird sanctuary visit scheduled, I'd like to take pics of the cliff birds

Which lens do you prefer in the 60-200 range? I want to have a nice versitle lens for a trip to Europe, lots of landscapes, buildings and flowers. Not sure which one I should go with.

Also for birding, should I get a 300mm just for that? Would like to take one or two lenses at most. I plan on a lot of walking around London as well, so a lens for this would be needed.
I just go back and forth, unsure of my own decision making process :o

Landscape lens?

Ok being a very new newbie, I don't quite understand what makes a great landscape/country roads lens? When everyone says a "wide angle", not really sure what that is. I *think* it should be a lower mm?
Is the DA 40 2.8 usable for these shots or not really?
Sorry for such a basic question :o

After much debating and digging into all the wonderful responses in my earlier post, I may have my lens options narrowed.
I think I will need to go with 2 separate lenses rather that a "do all" , not very realistic I guess.
That said, I need a lens for country scenery and wildlife/birds
One for great portraits/ great Bokeh
And one for in the city/architecture/scenery
I am open to 3 lenses I suppose but with travel I would like to cut back. The front runners are the 50-135, 18-135, and I kind of looked at the spendy DA 55 1.4 , Also the DA 70 2.4. Do any of these seem overboard? For my 3 main needs, can't figure which would be best for me.
Still need a lens for kids sports too?!
As you can surely tell, I really don't know what I am talking about, but I am trying! Thanks all!!

Yes, I am new to this and slowly learning my k-30 so bear with me! I am looking for a great lens under $1000 (if that's possible) or close to it.
Here's what I have needs for:
portraits of kids- great boket,
some sports, lots of landscape,
and an upcoming trip to the England-unavoidable showers I am sure,
and portability/lots of travel is a definite concern.

I am worried about the SDM failure, and would like AF as well.
New to this, do I need a wide angle, a telephoto? I really don't know what I should be after...:o:o
What are your thoughts? Thanks for bearing with me!!!!

Ok, yes, I knew this was ambitious but my initial goal was to have less baggage in London. But maybe I'll have to bring 2 lenses. If I have one for closer architecture and another for country landscapes, maybe that will be good? And a completely different one for my kids close ups? So now what ones? Thanks a ton guys!
Oh, I only have the basic 18-55 kit lens. It's just ok.

Yes, very green here. Do I need a filter for my DA 50 1.4 and Da 55-300? And what kind? What size? I am thinking more for lens protection, but I don't want crappy ones that will wreck any pics. Just wondering! Thanks!!! :o

Thinking of a new lens, I have the kit 18-55 and DA50 1.8. for my k-30. I am looking for something that will prove useful for portraits and nice bokeh but needs to reach a stage, I shoot dance recitals so speed is also a great point. As well as landscapes. (Too much for one lens??)
And more importantly I cannot spend a ton. Like under $400. Any ideas? I was considering the DA 50-200.
Thanks!!!

You all are an amazing support system! I cannot wait to really dig in! Not quite tomorrow though :( Yeah I would have liked much more lead time but there's a wet cold nasty spell in the forcast and she wants the fall colors. Argghhh.

Anyway- I have zero experience shooting raw, I just knew while shopping, I should get into it at some point. What is the main benefit, and will I need special software when I upload onto my computer for editing? I am clueless!

Appreciate all the calculations!!!!

Here's the deal. I finally just got my new K-30 this weekend and guess what, my dear friend talked me into taking pics of her daughter for her senior pics. I just got it and she knows this and I tried to buy time BUT I suckered and said I would TRY--tomorrow :o I am very amature, just advancing from a bridge. Anyway, to give it a try, what settings would be a good bet? It's going to be late afternoon, pretty bright sun but not direct of course (shade, fall foilage) and I have the DA 50 1.8 lens. Obviously I am green and was planning to have more time to book up before an "event". Can I shoot in auto for a back up?
