Push it down into your trouser pocket. It will be safe there as anyone seeing that sort of bulge isn't going to mess with you.

Everyone is important, interesting and has something valid to contribute!

On the subject of lens choices, in addition to the choice of excellent albeit often clinical modern glass, there is a plethora of vintage glass to explore with all their attendant foibles and vintage characteristics. Yes, many are screw mount such as the excellent Takumars and other third party offerings but Pentax also has a substantial inventory of bayonet mount lenses such as A, K & M series many of which are available at very reasonable prices. Yes they are all manual in operation but I'm guessing that the manual approach would perhaps more suit your ethos anyway.

I enjoyed reading this particularly because I share so many of your sentiments. I'm not into tech-fetishism or social media either but I own a number of cameras including a K3 & K1 and do have an addiction to vintage lenses for both their individual characteristics and historic interest. I think the interest in the K3.3 Mono has probably been beyond all expectations of Pentax being a massive hit not only with Pentaxions but also a big draw to people like yourself which can only be a good thing. Is the release a gamble by Pentax or a very shrewd development by someone at Pentax with a crystal lens focused on the future:lol: I think the latter! Long live Pentax! I won't be acquiring one any time soon myself as I do like colour as well and can't really justify the expense of a mono only camera (for the moment at least;)) Greyscale is a fascinating area of photography which appears to be attracting a whole new generation of dedicated enthusiasts, it's little wonder the K3.3 mono is finding favour with so many.

Thank you for your post and welcome to Pentax & Pentax Forums.

Long live Pentax... :)

I have a notion that with this lens access to the rear element will be facilitated by removing the lens mount assembly which I'm guessing may be held in place with four screws like the one I see in your photo just below the red f2.8 mark. Of course without having the lens in hand to inspect I could be way off mark.

Persevere and good luck.:)

lenses to stay clear of

I would go further by saying stay away from ALL lenses period, or you will run the risk of contracting LBA. If you don't yet know what that is, you soon will should you start taking an unhealthy interest in lenses.

You have been warned!

And thank you too Tomgh, it was very gracious of you to register and express your thanks. I'm delighted the post has been of help to you and others.

Now I suspect there are many of you who are familiar with Mark Holtze and his excellent Youtube channel. Several days ago he released his latest video, (a follow up to earlier review he did) in which he shares some very useful and little known information about the Takumar 35mm f2.3.

Recommended viewing for users of this lens.

My friend's car had been playing up for a day or two so he took it to his local garage repair shop for a diagnosis. The mechanic informed him that the engine was running at a high temperature and had tested positive for C.V. - Corrosion Virus. The mechanic said there was no need to worry though as he had treated the engine with an anti C.V. fluid that also contained a special additive which would allow Bill Gates to monitor its health from now on....

Sigma 8-16mm. Unbeatable indoors and in aircraft museums. Yes it is slower than your ideal so maybe consider some support such as a monopod to assist you. Oft times a compromise is needed when wide & fast can't be had in one package.

Just my 10 cents. Good luck anyway...

The GR Project

In keeping with the spirit of the above videos, here is another from a dedicated GR enthusiast, Samuel Lintaro Hopf, who's mission has been to travel the world meeting like minded GR oficionados. More of his work can be found on Youtube (search GR project) but in this particular episode he travels to London to spend a day in the capital with Sean Tucker to share and enjoy some GR inspiration.

Hope you like it.....

Grateful thanks to you SJP with your successful CLA and for posting your valuable input to this thread, which in turn may hopefully inspire others with the confidence to tackle their own maintenance of this beautiful if somewhat irksome piece of Pentax engineering.

Best regards, P.D.

You are very welcome Kevin and I'm pleased that you and hopefully many others found it interesting. What I particularly like about Sean Tucker is his self effacing and very philosophical approach to photography, which for me is a breath of fresh air when compared with so many ego's that seem to pervade YouTube photography channels these days.

Just my thoughts of course!!!

Best regards everyone....

Perhaps you could be so kind as to make a photographic record with notes on your progress, that would benefit other owners of this fine lens.

Helios 44M-7

Locating an original 44m-7 can be a bit of a minefield. There is a lot of info that can be found via a Google search.
Example; taken from:- New old stock Helios 44M-7 lenses

PostPosted: Mon Mar 06, 2017 6:08 am
"Unfortunately, version 44M-7 is rarely found even in Russia. I bought a copy for about USD 20 (if converted at current exchange rate) in mint condition with the camera.
In Russia, the price of different versions are practically identical. The reason is that here everyone knows - in the case of Helios lenses the quality is not determined by the numbers on the body Smile It can be very bad genuine 44M-7, and very good 44M-5. It can be very good 44M-7 and very bad 44M-5, 44M-6, and so on. It is a matter of luck. So I always advise to check Helios lenses before purchase (regardless of version), or buy only from familiar.
And another common misconception. Many people think that first produced 44M-5, then 44M-6, then 44M-7. This is absolutely not true, it's not chronological numbering. All these versions were released simultaneously. The lenses were tested, and, depending on whether the resolving power was at each particular instance, it is assigned an index of 5, 6 or 7. Thus, version 44M-7 - the best on the lines per mm parameter. Theoretically Smile In practice, it depends on many other factors. For example, how much was drunk worker who made the lens. My copy 44M-7 much better the original German Biotar. But I have met and utterly horrible copies of 44M-7 (not fakes!).
44M-7 with 8 blades - it is 100% fake. But not the fact that it is a bad lens, if you're lucky, it may be better than the genuine 44M-7.
44M-7 has ONLY six blades and NOT have switch A/M. 44M-7 was produced in only one plant (Jupiter in the city of Valdai) - logo in the form of arrow with the circle. The first two digits of the serial number, usually 91, 92, 93 (years of release). Front ring with lens name may be of metal or plastic (plastic - not a sign of a fake, it is a normal feature of the later copies, attempt to reduce the cost of production). Weight - 270 grams (early Helios, such as 44-2, have less weight).
In addition, there are two different lenses with similar names - Helios-44M-7 and Helios-44-7 (rare lens for Zenit-7 camera only). Do not confuse them.
Greetings from Russia."

As always with these things, research is crucial. A smattering of good luck also helps.

Good luck on your search.
