I found once my K-30 body developed aperture problems that using the D-BH109 adapter was only a temporary fix, and a short lived one at that. Initially the camera would operate correctly, but 8-12 hours later the 'black' shots would come back. After a few days the AA adapter with fresh batteries had no positive impact.

I took the survey.
Purchased K-30: July 2012
Aperture block failure: March 2015
Shutter count: 2,450 (Note: approximately 1,800 of those shots were taken on a trip abroad in October 2012, shortly after the camera's purchase)

Repair cost: Zero. My K-30 was out of warranty. The repair estimate was ~$200. I sold the K-30 for parts on ebay and used the proceeds to help purchase a new K-50 in October 2015 for $297. I sincerely hope that I do no regret that decision. Yes, I picked up the extended warranty.

Well my K-30 recently developed the under exposure issue after 36 months and only 3,500 shots. It was purchased in August 2012, so it was one of the early ones. Since sending it out to Precision for repair will cost north of $200 I just ordered a K-50 body to replace it.

I just received this email notice from Mertz:

The new firmware version for the flash unit mecablitz 50 AF-1 digital for Pentax is available. The new version enables the HSS function together with Pentax K-30. This new version can be downloaded from our homepage by following link:

I was last in contact with Metz in regard to the 50 AF-1 around November 1, 2012. At that time they indicated that they would email me once the firmware had been updated for the K-30. I have not heard from them since. I have been checking the Metz website on occasion. As of today the latest version is still Firmware V3.0 - released on July 27, 2012 and that is not compatible with the K-30. From the discussion here, the Metz 52 AF-1 is compatible with the K-30 and has more features for a moderate increase in price. It is now the flash route I am going pursue for my K-30.

Now can a K-30 owner confirm they are successfully using the Metz Mecablitz 52 AF-1 with the K-30?

Thank you.

'Thank you for your e-mail inquiry of 31 October 2012. We regret the trouble that you have with your flash unit "mecablitz 50 AF-1 P digital" (Pentax version) and your digital camera "Pentax K-30". The new digital camera "Pentax K-30" has been tested in our developing department. Unfortunately, we noticed that flash unit's current firmware version 3.0 is not suitable for running with the new digital camera "Pentax K-30". For this reason there are also not any flash unit recommendations mentioned for the "Pentax K-30" on our web site. The current firmware version 3.0 of flash unit "mecablitz 50 AF-1 P digital" needs to be improved for the digital camera "Pentax K-30". A new firmware version for the flash unit is in preparation. When the new firmware version is ready it has also to be tested intensively by our quality department before it will be released. Unfortunately, for this reason we cannot supply a time frame when the new firmware will be available at the moment.

As soon as the new firmware version for the flash unit is available it will also be ready for download on our web site: http://www.metz.de/en/flash-units/firmware-download-flash-units/mecablitz-50...al/pentax.html Additionally, we will also inform you by e-mail when the new firmware version for your flash unit is available.

With kind regards
Wolfgang Becker Technical Support'

In checking the Metz's revision notes specific to the Mecablitz 48 AF-1 there is no indication that V4.0 will work with the K-30.
http://www.metz.de/index.php?eID=tx_nawsecuredl&u=0&file=fileadmin/fm-dam/Do...f18e4daccc684b

It would seem that firmware update V4.0 for the 48 AF-1 is similar to V3.0 for the 50 AF-1.

How many K-30 owners do we have?

I purchased a Pentax K-30 with 18-135mm WR about a week ago from Emmy Camera via Amazon.
The learning curve has been a little steep and the nearly 300 page owner's manual has proven to be challenging. I was a 30+ user of film SLRs, but parted with my last one over 8 years ago. In the interim I have used two digital point-and-shoots, but they have proven to be less than satisfying. This is both my first Pentax camera and DSLR. I am finally starting to get the hang of it.

Donfenix, thanks so much for posting your experiences with the Metz mecablitz 50 AF-1 and Pentax F-30.
I just took delivery on both units and I am having the same underexposure issues when using the 50 AF-1.
Initially I thought it was user error, but I played around with various setting for quite sometime. The clincher is when I would take the same series of shots; first using the 50 AF-1 and then switching to the F-30's pop-up flash. The F-30's imbedded flash consistently gave me just fine exposures. Hoping that the firmware update is released sooner rather than later.
