Hi,

This is my picture to enter the contest for the Ricoh GR Digital IV Giveaway.

It was taken a few days ago in my patio, and the stars are the beautiful bougainvilleas flowers that came a bit late this summer.

The picture was taken with a Pentax K10D which is no longer for sale; hence I am using a link from Adorama for the batteries, as it is the closest item I could find to my camera:
Pentax D-LI50 Li-ion Battery Charger for K10D/K20D DSLR 39581

Good luck everyone!

Thanks for the heads-up.

On the opposite side, a reputed photographer, Carl Weese (who did a stunnin job in reviewing the Pentax K10D for The Online Photographer back in the day), has recently posted his impressions about the K-5, and he's not so enthusiastic.

His short comment is here:

After these stellar results under objective tests, I wonder what kind of bullshit will be posted by RH to try and downplay the K5. It will be curious to see.

It will also be curious to see the usual naysayers about Pentax, those who have been claiming for years that Pentax was dead.

Open letter to the Major Camera Manufacturers by Lumionus Landscape

After reading this article in Luminous Landscape, I posted this in my bog:

Are CCD-based cameras the best option for high quality, high aperture lenses?
I found today a very interesting article posted by the well known site Luminous Landscape, entitled "An Open Letter to the Major Camera Manufacturers". It is based on confidential data provided by DxO Labs, and to summarize, they say that, due to light loss occurring with the current CMOS sensors (derived from their structure, which requires light rays coming in a completely perpendicular way for full effect), the camera manufacturers have implemented an automated change in ISO when the lens aperture is very high (which means when there is very high light loss, because such aperture allows many oblique rays to reach the sensor). And this is non openly communicated by the camera manufacturers; in other words, there is an ISO response being manipulated without information to the photographer.

This is certainly interesting (or maybe, even scandalous?), and they suggest that, under such conditions, it might have more sense to invest in lenses which lack such high apertures (which means, in general, cheaper lenses), and use regularly non maximum apertures.

But it has also other implications: in fact, the above described problems are coming from the massive utilization of CMOS sensors; their main advantage is that they have a great sensitivity to low light, but in fact part of this advantage comes, most probably, from this non reported implementation of the automated change in ISO for high apertures.

And the main implication, the one that interests me more, is that those problems do not affect cameras based on CCD sensors, instead of CMOS sensors; the CCD sensor structure does not suffer from light loss, because they are also receiving oblique rays of light (and not only the perpendicular ones, as CMOS sensors), which in turn means that high aperture lenses can be fully exploited by these cameras without any manipulation in the ISO response of the sensor. And this sounds very nice to me, since I have a Pentax K10D, which sensor is of the CCD type. The articule in Luminous Landscape mentions that other cameras, as medium format and also the Leica M9, are also utilizing CCD sensors for this very reason. But there were other popular cameras, as the Nikon D200, based also on the same Sony CCD sensor as the K10D.

So, what was thus far considered as a "problem" of older cameras based on CCD sensors, might become in fact a big advantage when using high quality lenses which allow loads of light to pass across them and reach the sensor: they are getting all that light, regardless of being straight or oblique, and using it for the exposure WITHOUT manipulating the ISO settings of the sensor. These are big news to me, and I'm fairly convinced it could be the same for other users of "obsolete CCD-based cameras".

^ Yes we do.

In fact we have again the same situation we had back in the days of K10D, where there was a Nikkon model (D200) using exactly the same Sony sensor. The situation gets repeated now, with the D7000 vs K5: the core of the beast will be the same. The mean differences will be around, in range of lenses, autofocus, jpeg production, pricing, etc. At the time I remember making comparisons of the same pictures from the same subjects, posted at Digital Photography Review, from K10D vs D200, and when processed by the same software, they looked exactly the same. I'm fairly convinced this will be the case with the new models.

Pentax to join the micro4/3 standard?

I guess this is a reply to my previous post; now I understand and I agree: personally speaking, I am happy to accept the bulk of a dSLR as the price for an excellent optical viewfinder. But I understand that the sign of the times goes in the direction of mirrorless, and I hope that my favourite brand in photography does catch this train, while keeping a line of traditional dSLR for the people who prefer them.

I don't really understand your question, as the line to distinguish P&S from sub-slr (when dealing with interchangeable lenses, mirrorles cameras) is very fine. In fact, you can put any micro4/3 camera from Olympus or Panasonic under automatic mode, and it would be a P&S, right?

May I politely suggest people to stop hijacking threads? If there are fancy discussions about DoF or difraction or whatever, why not starting another thread?

Besides, are there moderators here?

I posted in my blog a couple of days ago that the 645D will indeed come to Spain in August, and someone reported the same information for Australia.

I expected this, although honestly not so early. It must mean that the presales or at least, the interest generated in consumers, is high enough for Hoya to make these announcements.

New firmware to K10D improves AF as well?

This is slightly related, but for what is worth:

When the K20D was released, the official information (IIRC) was that the focusing system was the same as in K10D. But Carl Weese posted, at The Online Photographer, that he had been carefully testing the AF in the K20D and there was a clear improvement.

This is the original post from Weese:
The Online Photographer: Pentax K20D Report?Part I: Focus

And this is the relevant quote (the bold lettering is mine):

QuoteQuote:

I hesitated several weeks before buying a K20D because the manufacturer’s literature states that the camera retains the K10D AF system. Since I found AF to be the K10D’s biggest weakness, this gave me pause. I’m happy to report that the AF is not the same, and all to the better. First, AF action with the lenses I’ve tried is faster, crisper. (Pentax may still say the AF is the same: I’m simply reporting my impression based on tens of thousands of exposures with the K10D and now 519 with a K20D.) AF accuracy is also improved. The K10D focus points were too much like broad patches for my preference: aim at a flower in front of a wall, and it would focus on the wall. Hold your hand out in front of the camera and point the AF patch at it and the focus will be perfect, but hold up just one finger and the focus will snap to the backgrounnd. Not a matter of back-focus, it was just blind to narrow objects that I would expect AF to recognize. The K20D consistently focuses on targets the K10D would miss.

I shot three frames of this subject, de-focusing the lens between shots, and the AF, in single shot selective center spot, snapped onto the iron gate each time. The older camera would have invariably focused on the brick wall in back, requiring manual over-ride.

AF accuracy is further improved by a brilliant new feature: user-adjustable AF focus point correction. With the camera firmly mounted on a tripod, aimed at a focusing target (you can easily find one for download on the web) make several exposures, download to a computer and view at 100% magnification. If the focus is in front or behind the intended point, go into the camera’s menus and change the custom setting, then test again. Of five modern Pentax AF lenses I have handy, one required a hefty correction of +6 (out of a possible ten), one needed +2, another benefits from a tweak of +1, and two others are dead on the money as is. The camera recognizes the lens as you mount it and applies your custom correction factor. My understanding is that the camera recognizes the lens by type, not individual serial number so if, as in my case, the factor of +6 is set for my 21mm DA Limited, the same factor would be applied if I borrowed someone else’s 21, which would likely introduce an error. You can also set a factor for all lenses which in effect means a correction for the camera itself. Of course this feature is ripe for abuse. Careless or mistaken use of AF correction could easily ruin the performance of excellent equipment, so use with extreme caution. But oh boy, do I love this feature!

Speaking of quick and crisp, the new camera is rated for the same 3 fps sequence shooting speed as its predecessor, but the action feels faster and “tighter.” I almost never shoot sequences but I certainly want the shortest possible lag time from button push to shutter actuation. I don’t have equipment to measure this, but the new camera seems to release closer to NOW than the old one. It also helps when making a grab shot if the AF is fast and certain.

This is an example. I turned a corner, the delivery truck roared by, and I shot two frames, barely getting the camera to my eye. Auto focus, auto (program) exposure, just a little tweaking of the RAW capture in ACR.

My point is that, in some cases, Pentax does not say anything about certain improvements, even if they do exist. In any case, I have not installed this firmware update on my K10D, so I can't say anything from my own experience.

^But that is entirely missing the point of mirrorless cameras.

Obviously many of us do prefer a traditional dSLR system; but it means bigger size, and also means (in the long run) a clearly higher price than a mirrorless system, which is simpler, more based on electronics than on fine mechanics, and thus by definition less expensive than a dSLR.

Is there any evidence demonstrating that Samsung did in fact offer Pentax to contribute, or is this just speculation?

From what I have read, it seems that the relationship Pentax/Samsung is cold for a longtime already. Thus I would not be surprised if such an offer did never happen, actually.

Pentax to join the micro4/3 standard?

First of all, let me say that I am a bit shocked by the impact of this thread; I think it is the best demonstration that, if such a move was made by Pentax, it would be received with big interest to say the least.

Now, on the discussion about the success or not of the micro4/3 standard, I think it is obvious that this system was a major step in the story of photography, and was so recognized by many important experts & journalists in the field. The mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses will change the landscape, for good or bad (depending on your tastes), and I think all companies will eventually make the majority of their advanced consumer sales in this part of the market.

From an strategic standpoint, and taking into account the ideas already expressed by Hoya to different media, I think it would not make sense to develop another, specific mirrorless system by Pentax itself: the need for new, adapted lenses would be the same, and besides it would be much more expensive than joining another standard. Therefore, and considering that the only existing systems are Micro4/3 (with a proved background and rather successful in sales) and the Samsung one (APS-C based, and with an uncertain success at this time), I think the logic move would be to join Micro4/3.

On the other hand, the forthcoming Sony system is only vaporware at this time, and besides I can't imagine Pentax going that route to back a big company like Sony. And the same reasoning is valid for hypothetic systems developed (or currently under development) by Canon or Nikon.

Anyway, all of this remains speculation; I hope there will be actual news in a reasonable timeframe.

I can only say that Sama has an excellent reputation, and very good contacts in the industry. Of course some of his posts (based on his famous crystal ball) combine inside info with some personal predictions, thus sometimes he gets completely right and others not so; I guess this is more or less the same for other people with inside info, but who do not take the final decisions in brands, of course.

Besides, in fairness, he says, at the end of his comment:

Which means:

Let me end with another comment: Sama has particularly good links with Olympus representatives, so in this specific case, I think his information has the look of being very reliable.

Anyway, I repeat: for good or bad, this is entirely coming from Sama, and I personally think he might be on to something. We will see in the coming months.

Olympus has nothing to prove regarding the feasability of their micro4/3 format; furthermore, they have a clear advantage regarding size of lenses (specially zooms).

You are right, but they came late to the game: Olympus/Panasonic are clearly leaders in the field, at this time. Thus IMO it makes sense for Hoya to join an open standard which already demonstrated that is working and generating loads of interest from consumers.

Valentín Sama, well informed and reputed Spanish expert on photography (I mentioned him several times before in my blog), just posted in his blog that Pentax might be seriously considering to join the micro4/3 standard. If this hint becomes true, we might be in front of one of the major news in the world of photography during 2010.

This is the original sentence in Spanish:
