It's also a matter of comfort. It's generally more comfortable to shoot with an eye cup than not.

Your camera will fit just fine on top of this. But I agree with 35mmfilmfan. Save the money and buy a modern one. Like the Manfrotto 290

+1 on rubber band. But I have found that the key is to just relax your grip a bit and not force it. That often seems to do the trick.
