I have a part time sports photography business and have been using the k5 since it came out. You can pick up a used k-5 over at KEH for around 550. Just bought one for my wife to replace her k-200.

I used to be a cross country coach many moons ago. Shot Minolta back then. Unless things have changed meets are either after school and in the woods and not a lot of light or at the larger state and district meets they in the early morning on weekends. Light tends to be pretty low for those as well. I have had a couple of the lenses you mention and while perfectly fine on nice sunny days they will not cut it in the woods in the later afternoon when the light is poor at its very best. I would prioritize getting a faster lens over getting a longer lens. If it were me I would pick up a used FA 50 1.4. and wait until the runners get in close. If your budget allows for it a DA 50-135 would be a great choice as well. Have a great season!

My wife and I went on a cruise from Boston last week. Not the action I typically shoot but thought this was pretty cool.

great shot thought I have to admit the first thing that attracted my attention was the dead wood front left in the photo. I know its morbid but almost like a wooden grave and the rocks in the back were there to protect it.

Does anyone have any experience with Backprint? I currently use smugmug and it works great for my purposes. However I have a couple races I will be shooting and smugmug doesnt have the functionality for a customer to search for their bib number. I dont want someone to have to sort through several thousand photos to find theres. Backprint appears to be the site of choice for race photographers. Would be interested in anyones past experiences with them.

Considering what you use it for I would just buy a used k-5 from someone from the forum and get some better glass. I have met a couple others who have the K-5 II and for what you are using it for the added benefit is not worth the cost over a K-5.

Hey all, New to this group and just picked up the sigma 70-200 2.8. Enjoying it so far. Looking forward to trying to for my daughters dance performance next week. Hope my shots come out as well as Matts. Here is my favorite shot so far from this years baseball season.

Excellent article on how to shoot a hockey game. Applies to basketball as well. Most of the gyms I shot at this winter were even more poorly lit than the hockey rinks

Just shot my first hockey game this weekend. Skip the flash. Two things I might suggest. 1. ask if you can shoot from the bench if possible. Tried this but the refs told me no. 2. If they wont let you shoot from the bench try and find a vantage point as high as possible above the glass.
