Hi

I've had the Sigma 17 - 70 with Pentax mount, never tried the Pentax 17 - 70.

Sigma was a good lens, but it is not a decent macro. And it is f2.8 only on the really wide end, so this number is not much but a gimmick. At focal lenght 70mm the Pentax has f4 while the Sigma has f4.5.

I also prefer shooting RAW and do post production in a raw converter.

I had K-7 before K-5, and in my opinion images from K-5 are sharper than from the K-7 coming right from the camera. My K-5 images are as a whole much better in terms of IQ right from the camera than the K-7 images were.

Got my hands on a Revuenon 55mm f1.2. It was not cheap, but then it was also in excellent condition.

Just have to show a picture taken with the lens.

Yeah, according to the dof calculator the difference is neglible. I am interested in experiences from people that have tried both, to hear if the difference is neglible in practical use too.

Advice on 85mm or 77mm lens

Hi

Lately I've been thinking harder and harder of buying a 77mm Ltd f1.8 or a 85mm f1.4 lens. I just love narrow dof and smooth bokeh.

I do have a mint 85mm Pentax K 85mm f1.8 lens, which is very good wide open (I use it only wide open). The thing is that I am not comfortable with a lens that does not have autofocus and have to be used fully manual.

I am primarily thinking of the Pentax 77mm f1.8 or Sigma's new 85mm f1.4. I have of course read through all the net about the Pentax 77mm f1.8 and know that one is quality. Less is written about Sigmas 85mm f1.4; so I wonder if anyone has experienced this lens?

Also, how much difference (in practical use) will there be between f1.8 and f1.4? I am not too concerned about the extra light f1.4 offers in advantage of the f1.8, rather I am interested in the out of focus qualities.

I have the Metz 58AF-1 flash. Use it both HotShoe and remote (together with my Pentax flashes). No problems encountered.

Poll: Full frame or improved AF. What do you want in the "K-8"?

First of all, less noise at high ISO and better DR are my foremost wishes. It is a shame that K-x is way better than the K-7 when it comes to high ISO noise and DR, looking at the price difference and the fact that the K-x was released just months after the K-7.

Pentax 100 WR macro vs Sigma 105 macro

Hm. My Sigma 105mm EX DG macro is not usable with this function. Even though I switch to MF, I have to set the camera to MF also, othervise I will force the AF motor in the camera to move. Is my lens not working properly, or have I misunderstood? I know this Sigma lens has this function on other cameras, but have always thought that the Pentax version lacks this function.

Pentax 100 WR macro vs Sigma 105 macro

Hei

I have the Sigma 105 mm macro lens. I am not dissatisfied with it, but the new Pentax weather sealed macro looks so fine :)

I am thinking of selling the Sigma and buying the Pentax, but want to hear if anyone has tried both. From the lens reviews at this forum, the new Pentax macro looks very good, but so does the Sigma 105, so it is still a draw.

Hopefully the IQ is good enough on both?

The differences as I see them is focus delimiter and the quick shift focus system.
The lack of focus delimiter is a con, but the quick shift focus system is a huge pro for the Pentax 100 mm wr lens.

Anyone tried both? and how is the autofocus speed an accuracy when compared?

Thx, that is what I was thinking. But do you know any software that can "batch extract" a lot of jpeg's to a chosen/decent quality? These are pictures that I will not post process, but would like to keep.

Hei

I shoot only RAW, but a lot of the pictures I know that I am not going to post process further, due to quality. So, to save space on harddisk I use Pentax' software to extract jpeg's of these pictures (you can do this with a lot of pictures simultanously). They are extracted in low quality, approximately 1,2 MB from K-7 pics. I have tried in settings menu to change this, to make my jpeg's one step better in quality, but have not sorted it out.

Does anybody know how to do this? I know how to change the settings in Pentax photo laboratory software, but this does not affect the quick jpeg extraction.

Generic battery replacement for D-Li90 - advice

I think I have read a similar question in this forum earlier, but could not find it when looking. I am looking for an extra battery for my K-7, and in Norway original battery is exxpensiiiive..... So I was searching for generic ones and found a 7.2V 1560mAh from Hähnel and a 7.4V 1860mAh with no brand. The latter one is the cheapest.

Will the 7.4V be a risk, as the original is 7.2V? The last thing I want to do is to do damage to my K-7.

FA 35, DA 40 and FA 50 for FA 31?
Posted By GSk

I currently have the FA 35mm f2, DA 40mm f2.8 and FA 50mm f1.4. As they are all rather similar in focal length I am not able to use them all very much. I am having the idea of selling them all to fund buying the FA 31mm instead.

This is because I think I will value the qualities of the FA 31mm have more than the FA 50 and DA 40's. I hardly ever use the FA 50mm at larger aperture than 2, and the small size of the DA 40 is no big deal for me. Also, it is not faster than the 16-50 that I often use. The 35 mm is the one I use most of these lenses. I have never tried the FA 31mm, but I am tempted by the colour rendition and bokeh of that lens, and it is fast enough for my use.

Does anyone have knowledge that makes my idea seem like a bad choice?

Get extra Li-ions batteries or get new K-7 Battery Grip to use with Eneloops?
Posted By GSk

Personally I think that the battery grip is useful with any lens, it makes it much easier to shoot vertically. For my personal likings, the K-7 is also too small for my hands, so the grip makes it much better. With AA batteries in the grip it becomes heavy, so for some events when you know you will not need the grip or extra battery, take it off and leave it at home.

I use AA's in the grip (rechargable NiMH) and they last longer than I expected. I mostly do landscapes, not firing at high burst rates. If that is the case, the AA's will not be able to give enough power.

Better glass, or a back up dSLR?

I would definitly go for better glass than having two bodies. The number of occasions where you need a backup body is limited, unless you do photographing as a job at weddings etc.

The difference between a kit lens and a quality lens is significant.

You seem to be standing some distance from the pier/boat, so you might not loose to much dof even using f/2.8.

Nice to see a K-7 review that recognizes the strengths of this camera. I have seen magazine reviews where the Sony A330 receive the same score on build quality and features as the Pentax K-7. The DP Review of K-7 is close to how I would review it.

On my K10D I had the AF button set to return the AF point to center, and I used it quite often. I am not able to find this function on my K-7. Is that because it doesn't excist, or do I just not find it?
