I doubt its the battery. If its getting power then any malfunctions would be down to bad contacts in buttons or faulty boards etc.
Try the factory reset if you can get to the menu.
The SD card must be formatted in the camera for it to work properly.
Chalk on your hands should not be a problem.
To be honest I would say that it must be returned. :(
Contact the seller. If it was through Amazon then they should be reasonable. (If not then complain to Amazon)
If you can't return it then the only thing you can do is take/send it to a dealer to get a quote for repair or see if its covered.

I've had mine for a couple of months with no freezes but I don't change lenses often. (Even though many people 'hot swap', I generally play it safe and turn off the camera when changing lenses)

Zorza you are correct that the best option available is the 30sec review.
If you zoom in on the review then it stays there until you half press the shutter.

From the testing I've done with my K30 the "jello" effect is in fact caused by SR (image stabilisation)
The rolling shutter effect is only apparent when panning quickly and this is common to all CMOS based DSLR's
While the K30 video is not the best, it can produce good quality if used properly and within its limits. (Its not a camcorder)
I had a Canon 550D before this and it had the same issues. (The stabilization was in lens and 'jello' was not as noticeable)
EDIT: Following from what bmonki said above:
When making films they usually have the camera on a crane, tripod or SeadyCam.
They never use autofocus
The stablilizers are large boxes that attach to the camera which contain 3 gyroscopes. (no sensor shift here)
Zoom is used sparingly. (count how many zooms there are next time you watch your favourite film)
With zoom shots they check the focus for the start and end then mark it on the 'follow focus' wheel. The 'Focus puller' (check film credits) is the guy who has to rotate the focus wheel (usually remote these days) so that it ends at the right focus for the end of the shot.

I was looking into getting a flashgun and read that sometimes the camera might lock up for a few minutes after firing the flash in certain conditions.
Can't remember where I saw that but try a search perhaps.
Glad its nothing permament :D

Thanks, but already tried that. Same result...
Besides, light leakage would make the shutter speed faster not slower.

Hiall,
I'm new to Pentax so maybe I missed something in settings etc...
Just wondering if anyone can confirm that the metering is differerent when using live view...?
With ISO and f/ set, Live view always has a slower shutter speed than OVF!
Tested with different lenses and various modes P, Tv, Av
Camera on table so view never changes
Anyone know why?
Cheers,
ED

Thanks for the rely Jup, but thats definitely a negative point for the K30.
Agree about the RAW/fx button, I haven't found any of the limited options useful.
It would be great to get a firmware update to allow more options but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Just got a white K30 in UK.
I've been a Canon abuser for a few years but I like the high ISO quality and other abilities so thought I'd try it out.
Takes some getting used to coming from another camera but images look good.
I can't find a way to lock AE when AE-L is used for AF tho.
Its a big pain in the butt to change camera systems as I have a good collection of Canon lenses now but I'm a sucker for shiny white ;)
I have a few days to compare before I decide.
Using 35mm f2.4 and Tamron 18-250mm (I'm also a lazy photog ;))

If its anything near the $800 predicted, no way!
The Tamron 18-250 has a good track record and 20mm extra is hardly noticeable.

So is there no way to lock AE when AE-L is used for AF?
Is there a setting (which I can't find) to lock AE with half press.
The alternative would be to flip the AF mode to manual each time but that is a PITA :(
