Got the camera back from repair today... he said that he had spent over three hours on it, the boards are wired rather than using more modern techniques, the battery had no information to allow him swap it like for like... in the end he didn't fix it, said I should either get a new memory card board or forget about it... simply too much trouble to replace...

So... I'm sure that the Q has been discontinued... Time for me to complete my collection.
Can anyone recommend the best/cheapest place for me to pick up an S1 body & 06 lens? Country of origin is irrelevant as I'll have to get it to Dubai anyway...
I already have the Q, 01, 02, 03, 08 and some accessories... The S10 body will give me wider wide angles (my main use) and be useful for video, as it has autofocus...

Understood
But you do understand that it makes the camera bigger...
... I thought size was the critical value point...?
much larger? as large as an articulating screen and additional tripod... I'm not disagreeing, just thing your points don't make allot of sense to me.
One of the big selling points for me is the physical controls. It is old-school and gives a creative bent to the Q that many other cameras lack. If I wanted an iPod style camera, I'd get the Nikon J1, with no controls. If Pentax do put a touch screen on the Q, I hope it is just for menu options rather than camera control.

These guys are old school Indian repair people. They are low tech, but actually generally do a very good job. They work on much more complex equoipment than my Q. Even if they do it up, they'll find a way to make it right... It comes from a culture of repair & value... they aren't highly sophisticated, but neither are they bound by silly union rules... I'm almost 23% sure they'll do a great job ;)

Heres my guess...
The weird knob on the front has a relatively contemporary finish (as opposed to the retro finish on the rest of the camera), so I believe it is for a new technology... I think 1) it contains the wifi antenna, 2) is a quick press button to link/share photos with your phone

I really hope they never put in a touch screen... there's no need... WiFi control from a phone would be a far better option.

In fairness, the selling point of Pentax for a novice photographer should be the weather resistance... It's a huge advantage... allot of the other benefits, like you said are numerical. WR is tangible - as is the design.
Most people want to think they are making their own decisions, but in reality they want assurance that they are making the right decision from their peers... So whether they choose an Nikanon or a Canikon, it doesn't matter, because the success of those brands are visible by the amount of people using them... Buying Pentax is a more educated decision & relies more on an individuals self confidence & security.

The main reason the Q is down in market share is due to Marketing Budget... Plain and simple. The Nikon is a nightmare to use, its more like an iPod than a camera, but Nikon have a massive marketing budget and most people are aware of the J1 (camera enthusiasts or not). Very few have heard of the Q.

I have read dozens of reviews for the Pentax Q from photography blogs & tech sites, I've watched all the YouTube reviews I can find & I've come to the following conclusions: - The Q is really quite an individual/unique system
- Allot of reviews concentrate on the sensor size and review it from the point of view of a tech junkie or professional photographer
- They seem to have a huge issue with what they perceive as 'not DSLR quality'...
It has made me think about how I came to choose the Q as my camera - although I do understand that many others have their reasons, here are mine:- I have always wanted to take photos in a more creative way.
- I have owned point and shoot/compact cameras, but never carry them, as either my phone does the same job (with less quality) or I just don't feel its worth carrying for the quality of photos I achieve.
- I work in a creative industry & while photography is not part of my requirement, it would be a nice addition. Although, non creative photography is very important - site photos, documenting progress etc.
- One of the modules in my college course (some years ago) was photography - film based... & while I haven't carried any of that learning into my life, I remember fondly the amount of control the lecturers cameras would give us & the fun, creative shots we would achieve while fecking around with them
- I have wanted to achieve that level of control again, but have felt that a DSLR is just not practical for me... I travel on business allot & there is no way I could manage a DSLR, nor would I want to. Nor would I want to carry something around of that size on any other occassion...
- I need a camera that is relatively small, very well built, has interchangeable lenses, but most importantly allows me the control I want & the tools to be creative
- During my search, most shops have been trying to push the Nikon 1 on me, this is not the camera for me. It is the iPod of cameras, takes all the control away from the user, makes their photos look good, makes them look good as they take their photos, but removes all the tools that allow people to be properly creative
- The Sony NEX cameras are just a bit too phallic and prosumer looking & the Olympus/Samsung/Panasonic just didn't offer the character I was hoping for...
- The Q is a solid piece of kit, I aim to keep the body for many years & to add lenses as I go. I'll be first in line to get a high quality wide angle lens, when/if they release it.
- I feel comfortable carrying the Q around & don't feel foolish as I would carrying a pro camera without the ability or skill to carry it off.
- I can be proud to have my Q out at professional meetings, social occasions, or just randomly on the street & it looks the part for each of those events.
- I'm not concerned about the perceived lack of image size, or the small sensor - the images I want to produce will be a little creative and will rarely get printed. I have no plan to ever sell a photo or to sell my photographic services professionally
To sum up... The Q is for me... It is in budget, offers the longevity I seek, looks good and takes great photos, while offering me the creative tools I need.
Having seen the new Q10, I have allot of faith in the Q system. I can see it becoming a cult classic & will hopefully sell enough to allow them to develop more lenses and accessories. As others have suggested, I can imagine a higher end body being released to complement the Q10 and hopefully bring a wider range of consumers to the system.
Those who judge it based purely on figures and compare it directly to 4 3rds and NEX cameras, fail to see it as an truly individual and unique system.
