Software alternative to Photoshop

I do not like subscription based software, but for $10/mo, it is hard to beat Lightroom/Photoshop. I can spend more than that on a tip for a dinner out one evening.

While Photoshop is the 800 lb gorilla in the graphics world, it is Lightroom where I spend most of my time processing my images.

And as always, it is not only the software itself you are getting, but also the vast knowledge base you buy into with LR/PS.

Landscape Night Sky over White Pocket

Taken during a two night workshop at White Pocket, which is located in the Paria Canyon/Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness in northern Arizona.

K1 Mk II, DFA 15-30/2.8.

10 sky shots stacked, then blended with the brain rock image taken during blue hour. I had actually screwed up most of my shots for the night sky, but managed to salvage this scene. Original intent was to place just the Milky Way (with no moon) in the middle of the scene, but that is what I get for not paying attention to the settings on my camera.

This is my first attempt using these technique, so I am still developing my skill set here. Any comments and critiques are welcome.

Still working on the shot from the first night at White Pocket. I did manage to snag some better sky shots, but foreground is not quite as interesting.

This is one of the true values of buying into the LR/PS eco-system. The knowledge base is vast and if you can think of something that needs doing, more than likely, someone has done it and posted a how-to.

Late to the game (just getting settled down from a trip), but I'm going to jump in with my FA 20/2.8.

Now that the weather is cooling off a bit, I've got more motivation to get out and shoot.

Thanks for the responses.

Yes, I know that a lot of work has to be put in any endeavor to make money, and I have to question my commitment to anything of this nature. I am retired, and at the moment, not willing to work to hard at anything. :)

I was hoping someone might have gone through something like this, and maybe found some low hanging fruit that could bring in a few bucks every now and then.

Affinity Photo - Half Price

Though am I firmly in the LR/PS camp, in spite of my distaste for subscriptions, I have been eyeing Affinity.

It already seemed to be a program to check out at the normal retail price. 50% off makes it a no brainer.

Now, just to actually use it instead of PS.

Just received an e-mail offer for a discounted price on this live stream conference.

Making some money from this serious hobby of mine had been on the fringe of my mind, but not something I have given any serious thought.

So, for $139, and a few hours of time over a couple of days, I'm wondering if I would get anything useful out of it. I know to make money from any endeavor takes some effort, and I have got to wonder if I have the motivation in my retirement to actually turn this hobby into a business, not matter how small.

Any thoughts from the hive?

There is a scene in the new Bosch Legacy series on Amazon where Bosch is examining the contents of a foot locker from the Vietnam era, and he pull out what looks to be a K-1000.

Now that April is over and I don't have to lug The Beast (D FA 15-30) anymore, I believe I will dig out some vintage glass and go with a M 85/2.0.

I had a software issue with my Dell XPS 15 2 in 1 that I decided needed an re-install to correct. So, being as I was starting with a clean slate, I did the upgrade when the option was presented.

So far, I don't really see the big deal either way. I have just installed Ligthroom and Photoshop, but have not really pushed it yet or installed any of my plugins. I'll be taking it on the road this weekend, and see what it does then.

Ponied up for a Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED. Yes it is old, but the result I'm getting are phenomenal.

On the actual camera front, a couple of weeks ago, I bought a Pentax D FA 15-30, and a set of NISI filters for the thing. I'm planning on using that lens for the Single In challenge in January in prep for a trip we hope to take on April.

Like many of us, I have a large number of slides that I would like digitized. While a service bureau would probably be quicker, I do want control over the process.

Tried the 'scanning' with a DSLR route. While my initial attempt did hold promise, the technique and workflow seemed a bit clumsy, and there was the problem of leaving my equipment out of ready to use (not really practical in my current abode).

So.... I decided to go the dedicated file scanner route. This arrived today:

Seem to be in mint condition and was recently serviced. Works without any problems using Vuescan on my Windows 10 computer.

My first test have produced superior results over the DSLR scanning thing, without really getting into the depths of Vuescan. Will be spending the next couple of days going over all the controls that Vuescan has to offer.

Then off to tackle this huge project........

Bought a lens from a Japanese Ebay seller on Thursday, 7/29.

Received a Fedex shipping notification within an hour.

The lens arrived at the Fedex facility in Jacksonville, FL on Saturday 7/31.

I took delivery yesterday (Monday, 8/2) at 9:00 am.

Still shaking my head over that. I do believe that if I had bought the lens on Wednesday, I would have had it in my hands on Friday.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Not that I don't want any Pentax lenses - heck I have about 20 lenses, mostly all Pentax of various vintage.

I am just opening up to other possibilities.
