This article is still bringing joy! My 50-135 has not been used for a few years and had seized up. I found this and it is now working again, thank you!
It seems slower and sounds a bit “gravelly” still, but is working at least. Hopefully it will loosen up more with time.

I'm really keen on the Sony a6000 but it means a whole new lens system (I'm not interested in adapters).
I really wish there are an equivalent from Pentax as a small APS-C combined with the Ltd lenses would be fantastic. Has anyone heard any plans for this kind of thing? Maybe everyone is just focused on full frame :)

The NX300 looks good. I think I'm going to keep an eye out for an RX100 II now though. It meets my portability requirement much better so thanks kanafein for suggesting. The interchangeable lens options all just end up too bulky or limited to fixed length pancake then I'm back to buying more lenses. The Sony is a great size and very compact so easily fit in pocket etc.

Hmm, I think RX100 could be a good option. I was getting a bit fixated on getting APS-C size but maybe shouldn't be so concerned about that. It's also more pricey but 2nd hand could be an option. More research to be done!

Having done a few work trips and taken my DSLR with me I'm finding it too large and heavy, so looking for something small but still with decent size sensor etc. Also don't want to spend much more than around £300 as this is just a second camera after all for lugging around with my laptop etc on work trips.
I have narrowed in on the Sony a5000 and Samsung NX3000. Both are APS-C, small and come with a 16-50 lens. Currently favouring the NX3000 as it is cheaper, comes with LR5 and other than that there doesn't seem much between them. Other options seems to come with worse lenses (e.g. without stabilisation in) and that addition of LR5 is a really bonus.
Anyone have any thoughts or obvious contenders I should look at instead?

Here's what I do.
I have a computer that is always on and runs iTunes.
I have an Apple TV connected to my TV.
You put your photos on the computer then you can configure in iTunes to share the folder. Then on your Apple TV you can browse all your photos, use them as screen savers or have it cycle through them. Nice thing about this is if you have iPhone etc you can also stream to the Apple TV.
There are other similar options though but I'm down the apple route for now.

Good shot. I can't really give critique but one thing I did notice is to keep an eye on the minor details like his sleeve being twisted up. I think the image looks great though, nice glow to it.

Let me just temper this by saying the seller may not have known. If it was working for him he may have had no reason to ever look closely in the battery compartment so could be an honest mistake (e.g. does he have otherwise good feedback as a seller). Having said that, my experience with eBay is that they will almost always side with the buyer.
Therefore if you want a full refund you could ask him for it and if you don't get it then open a dispute, add some photos etc and you stand a good chance of getting it. There are time limits though but can't recall what they are.
If however you would be happy to keep it at a certain price then negotiate it. Let's face it, he's going to struggle to sell it to someone else now.
In other words give him the benefit of doubt and try to negotiate what you want out of this (big discount or full refund) but if he doesn't play ball then know that you have the dispute system to fall back on (but check out the time limits).

I bought both mine from focusingscreen.com and they come with a variety of plastic shims. Seem to recall I needed two of those stacked together with my K-r and I think my K-5II needed one but can't quite recall.

I bought it as part of a kit albeit a K-5II kit and yes, it came with the hood. So if it's the official kit it should come with the hood so sounds like these guys have just made up their own deal to get rid of some stock. Also sounds like they're trying to pull the wool over your eyes.
Therefore it's for you to decide. Are you getting a good enough deal to accept it or would you prefer to get the official kit? Personally, I'd worry about the history of this bubble wrapped lens and run a mile, unless it's a really really good deal...

SD cards are the type of thing that are a real rip off in high street stores. I always get mine from Amazon. If you want gear and are around London then you have two main options if you want Pentax stuff:
SRS Microsystems in Watford (20 min train ride north from Euston Station) tend to have the best prices and good range of stuff if you can get out to Watford (or buy online and get it delivered somewhere): SRS Microsystems ? Pentax, Nikon and Olympus Digital Cameras, Camera Accessories and Lenses
There is then Spectrum which is at the north end of Tottenham Court Rd just south of Warren Street tube. Home - Spectrum TCR LTD. My experience of Spectrum is that it's a bit more "wheeler dealer" in that they don't have prices but instead ask how much you've found it elsewhere ie. they try to sell for as high as they can get away with. Therefore find the price from somewhere like SRS and they will match it.
Therefore preference would be SRS but Spectrum if you can't get out of London.
Generally though Tottenham Court Rd has lots of electronics shops so probably best place to get SD cards as well.

Liney - different things.
Having the aperture levers just means they act like an M lens. Means you can set the aperture on your lens (assuming your lens has aperture settings but the lens will remain wide open until you hit the shutter. Means you can use stop down metering, green button as well.
I think what you're refering to is when you have a lens reversed for macro. In these cases the lens will be "shut" so really dark and hard to focus. Therefore you can manually hold the aperture lever on the lens open.

I think to say the cheap eBay ones are rubbish is a bit unfair. I have bought two sets costing between £10 - £50 and both are solid and well built. The first and cheaper set are Pentax Asahi Japan ones. I bought these first but soon realised I really needed a set with the aperture levers.
I then bought a set of Sunagor ones that have the aperture levers. That is the key thing to ensure you can use green button and stop down metering. Therefore look for a set that have these - they are often labelled Auto or similar but ideally you would want to check the picture to make sure they have them. When you get them they often have a black anodised surface which you then need to sand off (I used a dremel) so they may contact with the camera properly.
The ones you posted don't have the levers by the look of it so avoid them. Whereas for example the ones below are similar to mine and in the picture you can see the aperture lever, and they are labelled at Auto.

Wow, long thread. I haven't read all of it but see a few recent questions about how dark the screen gets. I have the ee-S screen in my K-5 II (also had one in my K-r). I am currently sitting in a room in daytime with slat blinds half closed. So it's not exactly bright but not dark either, in the middle.
I stick a manual lens on so I can adjust the aperture manually. My personal view is that once you hit F8 it's doable but starting to get tricky. Anything F5.6 or wider is fine. Outside then past F8 would be fine. Given that for any lens with the aperture levers you'll be doing your focussing wide open you'd have to have a seriously slow lens for it to be an issue.
Must admit, I haven't tried this experiment in the dark but have never had an issue with the viewfinder being too dark in normal use. This includes using my 18-135 which is an F3.5-5.6 lens.
Not very scientific but I hope that helps someone.

I think the issue you may be referring to with ND filters on the DA 15 is with the square types that come with a holder and various sized rings. I have one of these sets (cheapo one) and the problem is that the DA 15 has a built in hood that protrudes slightly even when not extended. This means you can't get the square filters on. The solution for me was to get a cheap 49mm UV filter, smash the glass out and effectively use it as an extension. I can then fit the square filter onto that. So I have my lens, an empty 49mm filter and then the square filter screwed on the end.
Doing this does give a very slight vignette though. What I have now decided to do eventually is to just get myself some 49mm screw on ND filters rather than use the square ones. 49mm is common across the DA Limited range and also quite a few of my A and other prime lenses so I know I'll be able to use them on any of my lenses I'll be doing landscape stuff with.
