Which SD card for K3?

Yup, those are fine.

I think the U3 indicates it can work similar to a CD-rom drive for older computers, if I'm not mistaken.. I just disregard it, though.

That's what I think, too. I've gotten the PITA finicky wireless transfer to work with my Canon G7X - so that's pretty much all I use with that camera.. Also saving wear & tear on the card slot connections.

Yup, same here. I don't even think I've tested it with the K-3 - and my USB ports are USB-2 anyways.

That's what I do.. Faster card in slot 1. And no, the cards don't need to have the same capacity.

I Have a 32GB Sandisk Extreme Pro (95-write) in slot 1 - and slot 2, set for overfill, is a 128GB Transcend (60-write).

The idea is to get the faster card at a capacity that incorporates how much you might normally shoot, including any burst shooting.. And the slower card as overfill.

Myself - I'll probably never even come close to filling the 32GB card (which actually came from my K-30 - which now has a 32GB, 45-write Sandisk). But it's really comforting to know I have 4 times as much in reserve... Nice seeing those high numbers - for RAW(DNG): 598 for card 1, and 2412 for slot 2. :)

This thread begs the question... If one is only an occasional light photographer, might the shutter last longer than it's rated actuations than someone that would hammer away in burst mode most of the time? ... Assuming all else is equal.

hmmm.. Modern day cameras.. The equivalent of modern day SSD's?

Yeah, shooting for newspapers is one area where JPG makes sense. They don't have the time to do post.
However when he shoots for non-news, like for himself, is one area where even I myself would continue to try and persuade him. :) I have so many jpg's where I wish I had shot raw, but not the other way around. I still kick myself for not shooting raw when I had a cam capable of it (Fuji S7000), but back then I had not heard of Lightroom so I didn't know how exactly to deal with the raws.

I still try to persuade my sister to get something like the Canon S100 (for GPS) and at least shoot raw+jpg - and offer to process the raws for her.. She goes on vacations all across the world and takes all her pictures with a fricken camera phone! OY! The horror --- the HORROR!

Personally, I'd have gone for 2 of these, for cheaper.. (95mb/s write)

http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Extreme-UHS-I-Memory-SDSDXPA-032G-AFFP/dp/B007NDL56A

I hope you do know that the ones you got are 60mb/s write..
But my guess is you went for something available locally. Unfortunately I too, know all too well that 'gotta have it now' syndrome. :)

They'll still be way faster than the aged, and likely bad, class 6 one(s) you had. And truth-be-told, the difference between the 60-write and 95-write may not be over-the-top noticeable anyways.

And in regards to your other thread.. If the card reader also locked up, I wouldn't worry about the camera being bad. But do watch for it of course with the new cards. And maybe run them through a program to do a full write-read test.

Good luck and happy snapping!

(Also, a correction on the older K-30's writing speed.. I just did the test again, and there was no noticeable difference between the 45-write and 95-write Sandisk cards. And I think (Adam, was it?) mentioned in the K-30 forum that it's max write speed is 30mb/s.)

I keep trying to form one here too. Trouble is I keep forgetting to tell people where the meetings are. Sometimes I get the sneaking suspicion that I might be subconsciously forgetting on purpose though.

Not that I'm in any way advocating it, but personally I couldn't care less what the law would say if my life would be at stake. I always have my mini tear gas (illegal here, but the markings have long since worn off) and mini pepper spray and a smallish folding knife on me at all times - not just in known 'iffy' photography situations. When I was in Ohio (a veritable police-state), I was 'caught' several times walking through parks after hours (sometimes unknowingly, and one time completely lost even though there were dirt trails) - and every time they would drive me out of the park then give me back my 'tools'. No tickets or anything - everything remained very polite & civilized. I was always completely upfront about letting them know I had them (well, not volunteering that one of the mini-canisters happened to be tear-gas instead of pepper spray ;) ), making sure I kinda raised my hands so they knew I wasn't trying to be any sort of threat. So I think as long as everything seems 'legit' and you're completely upfront about everything, that they would be more likely to look the other way. Again - not advocating it, but if your life would be at stake I personally would rather get a ticket than get killed. Of course there'd be irony if it was by my own knife. :) Fortunately I've never had to use them to fend off an attack, and I hope to never use them - save for using the knife as a tool (i.e. to open bubble-wrap packaging).

Yikes! I don't think I could do that, myself. I would think having at least MOST of that gear right in my tent would act as sort of a security blanket, and be comforting. Then again, I've never slept in a tent either. :)

Pixel shifting

For reference, the engine is the same between LR and ACR. Since LR4 the process version has been pv2012 (I don't know the ACR version equivalents), only the tools have progressed since then.

If the Pixel Shifting is anything like the raw-HDR of the K-3 where each image has been stored in the DNG separately, then not even the current LR6/ACR will be able to decode them. It'll only display and work with the 1st image stored in them. The last I saw, Adobe was 'investigating' them but there still has been no resolution on those. ;)

So if that's the case with PixS, then LR still won't work for it. Which means like raw-HDR, the PixS (& therefore the K-3ii) would be of no use to me since I mainly use LR. I don't even think Capture One v9 can process either of those yet. So that means the only thing I like about the K-3ii is the addition of GPS.

Now - LR6's raw-HDR & raw-panorama (saved as DNG's) OTOH is of far more use to me, and just got much better with LR6.3. However, I know for a fact that Capture One v9 still doesn't recognize them. Although that may be more because of the raw searing hatred by many Capture One proponents of Adobe and therefore of DNG.

OH... When you receive the cards, you may want to put them through the wringer with something like this:
Flash Memory Toolkit website

I usually test them with just one write-read pass, but you could always do more passes - like if your income might depend on them, or you suspect a card is going bad. I test them even if it's a high quality card like the Sandisk ExtremePro.

There might also be freeware options available to do it, but I don't know of any offhand.

If anyone knows of any freeware/open-source options, I'd love to hear about them though.
Anyone?

Yet another +1 :)

I would forget about anything lower than class 10 - even forget about class 10 NON-uhs cards. Your K-3II really can use all the extra speed you throw at it.

You could also do what I've done and get a lower capacity ExtremePro(95MB/s write speed) card for slot 1.. Get one big enough for most of the shooting you might do, taking into account your use of any possible burst speed shooting. Then get a lower speed (i.e. 45MB/s write speed or higher), higher-capacity card for overfill in slot 2.

For myself... I have a 32GB Sandisk ExtremePro(95MB/s write) card in slot 1, and a 128GB Transcend (60MB/s write) in slot 2. Quite frankly, I'll likely never even get close to filling the 32-GB card - but it's reassuring to have that extra space available.

When looking at cards, make sure you are reading what the specified write speed is - not the read speed. Most have higher read and lower write speeds, and some brands have deceptive advertising of their speed - they try to pass off the read speed, as if it might be their write speed.

Back when I was doing testing with my K-30 there was, in fact, a noticeable writing speed-up when comparing a 45MB/s-write card to a 95MB/s write card.

The K-3/II can definitely make use of that extra writing speed.. Even the K-30 does!
If at all still usable, relegate the bad cards to a tertiary backup of something.

I too would like to know what makes the K-3/II a non-pro camera? Is it cost, alone? Is it the mere fact that it's not FF? ???

Back in 2012, I had $5000 to spend on a new DSLR camera system. That could've even meant only one [zoom] lens with a body. I was going for low-light and best image quality. I can't remember if FF was priced within that bracket at that time, but I looked at many brands of cameras - certainly Canon and Nikons were included in that 'research'.

In 2012 that camera system ended up being the Pentax K-30 (I wanted the newer technology, over the K-5). At least to my eyes, that camera produced the best quality images out of all of the competition I looked at within that spending bracket. And to boot, it was cheap enough that I could even get several lenses with that $5000 spending bracket! I would've spent $4000+/- on a camera body and $1000+/- for one lens if I had to, for the best image quality. Yet that turned out to be Pentax. Again, that's at least to my eyes. :p

Now although I didn't consider the K-30 to be a 'pro' camera - in large part at least, because it didn't have separate AE-L and AF-L buttons -- the K-3 DOES have separate buttons for those functions, and more. So why would the Pentax K-3/II not be considered a pro level camera? Where is that specific line in the sand?

K-3 back lcd timing

It's definitely not the dust removal - I can tell the difference between the cams: clunks vs. faint squeal.

According to this thread, it may be either the aperture motor of focus motor:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/58-troubleshooting-beginner-help/279796-k...e-motor-2.html

I had found a better recording of it on Youtube (also without explanation), but can't find it anymore. You can even feel a slight vibration when it does it - just as if gears really are involved.

But if it's either motor, I wonder why would the K-3 need to do it while the K-30 doesn't.

EDIT: OK.. Found it via Youtube history. Here is the better rendition of what I'm hearing.. I guess it happens with the K-5 as well:

ok, busted out my dormant K3.

It doesn't seem to be doing it anymore.. The back LCD stays on for about 30 seconds regardless of what the 'meter operating time' or 'auto-power-off' is set to.
I connected the O-GPS unit, which I remember to have made the the back-LCD-time shorter - to the point of turning off after just a few seconds after a half-press. And same thing - about 30sec. Also from what I remember, having the RAW/Fx button set to control the top LCD, and using it - there was some weirdness when using that as well.. Yet now that button truly does toggle the top LCD and has no effect on the timing for the back LCD anymore.

So it seems to be acting normal now. Weird.
Maybe it just needed many months resting in my camera bag.

So I guess, now, my only lingering curiosity is what that sound is when powering on the K3.. The K30 doesn't make it, so I don't know what it could be?

The latest.. v1.21

I think when I got it, it was an earlier version - but that was when I noticed it. That didn't change when upgrading.

After a half-press to get the meter going - is the back LCD supposed to remain on for a set number of seconds? And what might that be? .... I seem to remember that changing the settings for auto-power-off and whatnot had no effect on it either.

There's something that's been on the back of my mind for some time now..

The back LCD will seem to turn off after random intervals - especially, I think, when the lens cap was on.. And the timing seemed to get stranger when I have set the 'raw/fx' button for the top lcd - and/or put the GPS unit on. .... It happened no matter what i set the "meter operating time" to.

When I first got it, I though I might have had a bad unit. But outside of that, it's been ok so far. No mirror-flap issue yet - so that's good. :)

I haven't shot with my DSLR's in a while, so my memory is fuzzy on the specifics by now.

I've since chalked it down to: 1) Just a fluke, or more possibly 2) it's some firmware set thing and it's doing what it's supposed to do - just that I haven't found the manual to mention anything about it yet.

Soooo...
Does anyone have any insight into this seemingly random timing issue? Is it something known?

I've pretty much thought 'full frame' has been over-hyped anyways - even without pixel shift tech.

When you think about it -- just think how arbitrary it was that '35mm' became THE important size for sensors to mimic... How arbitrary it really was for 35mm film to become the dominant size [for those of us without $10,000 deep pockets]. (not knowing the exact history, here)

If/when a Pentax FF materializes, I may or may not be interested in ever getting it.. Maybe down the road - as long as it could still use my current lenses that are digital-only.

My vote would be for the Canon S series as well. As far as advanced super compacts that were raw & full-manual capable, I first got an S100 (w/GPS!), then a Canon G7X - and I still use the S100 for GPS tagging. Like the G7X, the S100 (and likely also the S110 & S120) can also be used in full-auto as well as full manual modes.
And if one of you REALLY wants to get nerdy about it, the S series can use the alternate CHDK firmware (via a program called 'Stick') that gets installed to an SD card - such that each advanced user here could have a separate SD card with their own CHDK preferences set. (Sadly, for me, CHDK isn't available for the G7X yet, if ever.)

And even though the G7X is higher up the rung of quality and budget (yet still pants-pocketable IMO, albeit more bulky), I find the Canon S100 is still no slouch.. I'll be editing an image thinking it was from the G7X - and then it turns out to be one of the GPS-tag pictures from the S100!

Another thing going for the Canon S series (vs. the G7X, for this example) is that spare 3rd-party batteries are much cheaper - about 2 for $5 USD. So cheap that I bought 2 more when getting the G7X, for a total of 5 batteries. I went for the S100 over the S110/S120 because it had GPS - if I want Wi-Fi, I could always get one of those Wi-Fi SD cards and then have GPS, as well as Wi-Fi.
.... As it stands now, I sometimes end up carrying both the S100 and the G7X - using the S100 to tag locations. Although personally, I think one might be a bit crazy if they literally just stick these cameras in their pockets. Even though you could get a screen protector (a glass protector, even) for the LCD, the lens 'cap'/cover on both these cameras have many blades.. And I don't know about you, but I always seem to have pocket lint - complete with particles -- perfect for getting stuck anywhere in the lens area. That's why I always use a belt case that's just barely larger than the camera, yet able to hold 3 to 4 spare batteries with a memory card or two.

I do wish Pentax would someday release advanced raw-capable super-compacts.. I would've bought one in a heartbeat!

Yeah - it does piss me off SOOOO much that Pentax has done it this way for my K-30! Not only am I not really willing to learn each manufacturers software, but having a disability that affect cognition and memory pretty much makes it unrealistic/impossible. ... I'd have to learn Fuji S7000, Olympus 720SW(jpg), Pentax K-30, and coming soon: the Canon S100 (being the only 'cheap' raw-capable ultra-slim truly pocketable camera I saw with good picture quality).

Before my Pentax K-30, I never even used RAW much at all with my Fuji S7000 due to confusion issues. I'm also having a hell of a time learning Lightroom 4 among other Raw/camera related things for the past ~5 months. I sure as HELL am not going to screw around with a new program for each and every fricken new camera that comes along! No way, No how! I'm just going to plow into learning to do everything within LR4(and beyond). No mess, no fuss!

It would be nice if Adobe better supported manufacturers that are embracing DNG by providing replications of in-camera processing profiles (aka camera calibration - especially for the default Pentax setting of 'Bright') rather than just pandering to the Canikon people, but that's another issue.

That's exactly what shows up here in Silkypix. On the K-30, there are 2 areas for effects/filters. The filters section I'm not all that concerned about, since I'm sure those could be replicated in many different softwares/presets. However the ones under 'Custom Image' are more desired. They are: Bright, Natural, Portrait, Landscape, Vibrant, Radiant, Muted, Bleach Bypass, Reversal Film, Monochrome, and Cross Processing. Obviously Monochrome isn't concerning, nor likely 'muted' and 'bleach bypass' since I'm guessing that would just be the saturation sliders - and vibrant might likely be the vibrance sliders in LR4. I'm still not entirely sure what the 'Cross Processing' is though.

I mainly keep it on Bright as it makes the photos stand out - I may eventually want a more natural look as I get over my K-30's newness, or maybe not.. ;) But the natural, landscape, vibrant, radiant, and reversal film sound interesting and useful. I see portrait and landscape in that Silkypix list, but considering how different the choices are, I'm willing to bet they are not the same.

I'm still guessing that Pentax is trying to screw us by not allowing the exact choices as K-5 owners would - similar to them crippling some camera features. However the whole anxiety over this endeavor is starting to make me think that I should just say "screw it" to thinking those are so important. And just stick to Lightroom and maybe some other raw converters - I did buy Sagelight too since there was an offer for $40 for lifetime upgrades.

And another thing that has plagued me is worrying that if I make all kinds of adjustments to my images, that once [hopefully] a stock agency or something might want to buy some - that the color would be all wrong. On top of that, like many guys I hear, I'm slightly color-deficient in the red-green area IIRC. And it's been concerning me that my laptop display isn't calibrated [at all properly]. SOOOO - I think I'm going to just break down and splurge on X-rite's i1Display Pro (Due to the ambient light AND temperature monitoring - since this room will have both regular CFLs and daylight CFLs at varying times) and their ColorChecker Passport. I see both on sale for $300 (and I think there will be a rebate too) - a LOT of money right now, but at least that will make any W/B adjustments a breeze (I never could figure out what way to adjust that anyways) PLUS I'll be able to make my own Camera profiles.
THEN I could actually concentrate on taking good pictures - imagine that!

Thanks though - at least I know that section doesn't change now. I think I may get over this hang-up and just shoot raw only once I figure things like adjustments out - and probably have LR keep a full-size preview in the DNG for ordinary displaying in other programs for slideshows and whatnot. That'll help save some space.

Yeah - I was becoming afraid that that could be the case when I looked at the Pentax site again. I'm wondering if there is a way to fool PDCU4 into thinking it's from a K-5 or something. My thought is that they're trying to screw K-30 owners for not having a K-5(II/IIs).

I'm starting to use Lightroom 4 for cataloging, but unfortunately there are no Pentax camera profiles. I have some that I found elsewhere - probably through this site, but they just don't seem the same as the camera in-built jpg processing. I tried the LR4 built-in 'punch' preset which is actually not that shabby, but it's not quite the same as 'bright' on the K-30.

What I'm wondering now is - does the Silkypix have automatic presets like PDCU4 that are just like the camera in-built camera ones? Or do you have to try and mimic them manually - in which case I might as well try to figure how to do that in LR4 since I'm starting to get used to it a TINY bit.

As I say - I want to rest easy knowing that I can reproduce the exact (or at least VERY near exact) in-cam PP. I'm still in the stage where I'm trying to figure out how my workflow is going to be with both old photos from other cameras and new, but so far I might have LR rename them to a preset of "[first,middle,&last-initials]_[DATE YYYYMMDD]_[Original-Filename]_[ISO]_[Camera-model]" (I did end up dropping [focal length(35mmFl)] from that though, for being a bit too long. :D) and lower-case extension - with a second copy going to a folder for bakup to any of DVD+RW, DVD+R, BD-RW, or BD-R - depending on how full the discs will be.
(I'm not a heavy shooter right now, especially while I'm trying to learn SOOO much about image editing/manipulartion and workflow and all that jazz.)

I realized I could process them by copying the original back onto a memory card and into the camera - but that could turn out to be a HUGE hassle considering I'll very likely be renaming them as above. I already found out that the camera won't accept much of anything but the original with it's near-original name (I think case change was ok IIRC). :-/
