I've been using the 24 - 70 on my K3 for a while now and love it. I've used it for concert photography, shot a wedding reception with it, a portrait photoshoot and taken it on holidays where it stayed on the camera for all but a couple of shots. I have the 15 and 21 limiteds for wider and a Sigma 50-150 or Pentax 55-300 for the longer end. It's a great lens. Heavy, but great.

Haven't used the Sigma 16-50 but I bought the new Pentax 24-70 late last year. So far I've used it for concert photography, a wedding reception, a holiday trip and a portrait photo shoot. It's worked beautifully on each occasion. It is heavy and large though. :)

Yeah Sandy, it certainly is. All that country around Lorne and around to London Bridge was beautiful.

Took the 24-70 out for its first spin the other weekend. Happy with it so far. No complaints with sharpness or handling on the K3.
Small venue gig. Hard to get focus right with singers in all black who move their head a lot when singing.
Shot some items at the opening day for a friend's new shop. |

It would have been nice if Ricoh had said "we are working on a firmware upgrade for the K3" a month ago when I got sent the new 55-300 PLM instead of the older DA WR one I ordered. I wouldn't have returned it then and imported the screw drive model from the US.

Is there anyone here who would be able to please email me the .lpc file for the Pentax 24-70? I'm still running the old standalone version of Lightroom.

Hahaha! Yeah you're right. Small kids would be right up there for tracking difficulty. I've done some sports shooting. Mainly cricket and tennis. I didn't mean that Pentax couldn't do it.

The bad news you don't want to hear is that the FA43 is just as superb as the FA31 and FA-77. :)

I think the true test would be team sports like football or hockey where you're trying to maintain and track focus on a subject that is quickly changing direction amongst many other objects. Not saying that it can't be done with Pentax, but subjects with an easily calculated tracking path certainly makes the task easier.
I've been using a K3 for low light concert photography for ages and it works very well.

Yeah, the DA55 is very sharp and was the first lens that came to mind when I read the thread title.

If you're considering the 50-135 then the Sigma 50-150 is comparable to that lens. Doesn't have the WR but it also doesn't have the problematic Pentax motor. Where in Australia are you?

Watch them release the K3 upgrade two weeks after I send this PLM version back for a refund. :D

It's good to hear that the older model is not discontinued. But having said that, every Australian shop I've asked (including dcexpert which I thought was CR Kennedy) has said that Pentax won't send them one if a customer placed an order. Maybe Pentax Australia doesn't sell enough here to warrant shipping more out here but markets like the US, UK etc will continued to be supplied.

Yeah, I was told that I should get one from the US or Japan so that will be my route. The new PLM version is a great size and weight. It feels great on the K3 body and the focus was quick and silent. If the aperture control worked on the K3 body then I'd have been very happy with it.

Because the new lens does not work properly on the K3, that's why. As much as I like the size, weight and feel of the PLM version and the silent AF, I'd prefer to be able to shoot with a setting other than wide open all the time. :)

I bought a DA55-300 HD (the red band one) from an eBay seller here in Australia. When it arrived it was the new PLM version instead. The seller was very good about it and contacted Pentax Australia to see if they had the older one in stock to do a swap. They were told no stock available. I've also tried a couple of the bigger name bricks and mortar chains here and got told the same thing. Only the new model is available and they are told they can't get new orders for the older non-PLM model.
So even if it's not officially discontinued, it's basically discontinued. At least in my part of the world. Not happy.

So this lens doesn't work on the K3 does it? The Pentax Australia site says that the old HD DA 55-300 has been replaced with this one. So is the old red band 55-300 now discontinued and replaced with a lens that won't work on any of their cameras other than the most recent ones?

I'm reserving my judgement on the 18-35 until I see some concert photographers use it shooting into stage lights and also until I see if the focus accuracy is dependable. The weight didn't bother me when I held one on a Canon body but when shooting to a 3 song limit at a spotlit stage I need to know I can trust the lens. My Sigma 24-70 tended to flare. The FA31 I know I can trust.
It's certainly a lens I'll be keeping an eye on though. But for size alone it's hard to see it replacing the FA31 in my bag. I'm too addicted to the small sized limited primes.

I enjoyed this one. The FA31 + K3 is a fantastic combination. |
