My interpretation of the full-frame rumors and interview responses...

Is that just speculation?

The sensor is designed and certified by CMOSIS; the sensor itself is fabricated by STMicroelectronics. Both are European firms; the press release made a big deal of an all-European sensor in the Leica M.

Regardless, the only thing that matters in the end, assuming one is potentially in the market for one of these bodies, is how it performs and it'll be awhile before we learn that.

I can't add anything to this discussion from a Pentax perspective, but I would like to add that from a Ricoh perspective it makes absolute sense for them to release a new module for the modular GXR system, a full frame M mount specific system.

Currently Ricoh is the only manufacturer other than Leica of digital M mount digital camera units. They would sell every single full frame module they could produce, without a shadow of a doubt, were they to release a full frame M module.

If they can do it for APS-C and M lenses, already a challenging mix, I believe they can do it for full frame sensors with M lenses. Extrapolating that logic, if you can make M lenses which have a short back focal length work with full frame sensors, making K mount lenses work well on digital full frame sensors is relative child's play. Maybe.

I just wanted to throw the Ricoh GXR angle out there.

Sony's RX1 has also upped the ante in the compact market too. Ricoh and Pentax having nothing to lose in this area could be a welcome maverick.

Pentax LXd / Sony A99 - better than D600 - which is already very very good.

The X series of cameras were successful because of a few things including retro looks, the optical / hybrid finder in the X100/X Pro 1 certainly can't be overlooked, and the form factor - small (ok the X Pro is more small-medium).

If an existing SLR / DSLR lens family is used, you automatically add 20 - 25mm to the backfocal distance of a typical compact. That additional depth over something like the X Pro 1 or the NEX cameras adds up and you end up with a more boxy body like the K-01.

While I can see going with an existing lens line up for expediency, maybe a longer term view would suggest that redesigning a core set of excellent primes for performance on a new mount, one with a short back focal distance, is worthwhile doing from a competitive perspective not to mention giving users what they want: very capable digital cameras in compact bodies supported by excellent optics.

Ok, not everyone wants those things but buyers of NEX and X Pro and X100 and X-E1 and the Ricoh GXR certainly do.

Looking forward to seeing that Ricoh/Pentax come up with.

Adam - that's a great idea, expanding the coverage of the site. I look forward to participating on an on-going basis... will have to drag some other Ricoh users over here. :)

Ryan - generally I focus with the lenses opened up to their max aperture or within a stop or two or three. Personally I like Mode 2 which we sometimes call "predator mode" after the movie Predator, but once in awhile I switch back to Mode 1 as (am right now) to see how it works for me. Apparently as of revision 1.50 of the firmware (you should update your camera if it isn't already at that rev level) Mode 1 is a little stronger but I can't yet tell.

Once nice thing about the cameras is you can set it up such that a half press of the shutter disables both Focus Assist and Magnification temporarily, returning you to a clear finder view.

I'd like to see a full frame sensor put in a Ricoh-Pentax GXR module, particularly a M mount camera module, giving existing GXR A12 Mount (M Mount) users an upgrade path that many will follow.

Suddenly by doing so Ricoh has a camera competitive feature wise with the Leica M9 and M. Add in a 35mm "lensor" module for GXR and the system competes well with the Sony RX1.

Thanks folks for the welcome, sorry it's been awhile since I checked in last.

For the past year I've been shooting the GXR system with only the Mount A12 (M mount) module as my primary camera system. I use a selection of Zeiss M mount lenses ranging from 18 through 50mm and one CV 75mm f/2.5 medium telephoto which gets effectively a little longer due to the 1.5X crop sensor.

As far as compact cameras I've found the Ricoh has about the best photographer-centric handling and menu system of any I've used. Prior to adopting the GXR I used the Fujifilm X100 extensively, and spent a couple months with the Sony NEX-5N.

In addition to handling well, the GXR Mount A16 was purpose built for M lenses, and, importantly, has no anti-alias filter. M glass really shines on this camera in ways that adapted M lenses on the NEX - while often terrific - can't quite meet.

The camera isn't perfect but it is close. Modernizing the sensor and updating the viewfinder are two frequently asked for updates from GXR users. Shot to shot time could be improved as could shot buffering.

Here's a snapshot of Vancouver ... had to run to catch this and run back to my double parked vehicle. Shot on the GXR with Zeiss ZM18mm (effectively 28mm field of view).

I'm happy to answer any questions about the GXR system you may have.

Hello folks, checking in here to learn more about Pentax DSLR offerings and maybe enable some cross pollination of information between Pentax and Ricoh system users.
