What happened to all of those Mamiya Sekor 35mm cameras?

I'm aware of that site. And, I found some other resources for repair of my 1000DTL. However, for some reason the new battery that I put in was dead.. so I thought the meter was finally done. But, for some reason I decided to go buy another battery today and -- guess what! -- the meter is NOT dead. I'm so thrilled. My first SLR was 500DTL and that camera's meter did go bad (probably the wiring, but who knew back in 1974?). So, a few years ago when film stuff was going cheap I bought a really nice 1000DTL; it takes wonderful photos and has the advantage of being able to use 1.5V batteries.

so... thanks for answering my question...it's amazing what can be found on the Pentax forums :D

and this post came up; my beloved camera seems to have developed a meter issue and I'm wondering if the fellow who mentioned repair would have a suggestion as to where I should send it.

I still use two Spotmatic bodies. For many years I used and taught with a K1000, but the Spotmatic is my all time fave. Here's an example with the 50 f/1.4 Super Takumar made last summer.

Pentax K10D ,Pentax smc P-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
1/90s f/5.6 at 55.0mm iso400

Pentax K10D ,Pentax smc P-A 35-105mm f/3.5 Zoom

Pentax K10D ,Mamiya Sekor 55f/1.4
1/4000s at 55.0mm iso400;plus extension tubes

The extent to which a photo has the 3D effect you're referring to has everything to do with the ability of the lens to focus closely, distance from the subject to the lens, distance from the subject to the background, and aperture.

that was strange; but I got a refund from him. In January I paid for a lens via paypal and when it didn't arrive I tracked him down (I had to PM him on FredMiranda to get his attention -- at least that's how it seemed). He said my lens was returned as undeliverable. It was sent by Canada Postal Service. The thing is, I had just rec'd a lens from Henry's in Canada a few days earlier also shipped by Canada PS and it arrived just fine. But, what did I know? Anyhow, I asked fastoys to give me refund. The first refund was as funds to my account which I had to accept for a fee from Paypal. I told him that wouldn't work and that I wanted it refunded by the method I paid; instead I got a refund in my personal account. But, I had to wait til his account had money in it before I could get the refund, which took about a week.
Usually, I just tell my credit card company to make a chargeback and I let them sort it out. I don't bother with paypal, but, since fastoys said he was giving a refund I didn't do that. I got the refund....but, I thought the whole transaction was strange at the time. Of course, I've also got a bad feedback from some teenager here on this marketplace forum because I wanted the paid for merchandise shipped in a timely fashion.... so.....feedback isn't necessarily useful....

Anyhow, if you paid with a credit card, have the credit card company pursue a chargeback.

good luck,

Can fill flash really be this simple?

and what time of day? Do you mean the panhandle of Florida or west along Alabama and Mississippi or Texas? Or the peninsula of Florida? The location and time of day will determine how the light will fall. If evening on the panhandle, then the light will be at an angle to your subjects. If evening (and no one gets married on the beach at noon or in the bright sun that I ever heard of... mostly it's late afternoon) or afternoon on the peninsula then the light will be from the west and your bride may choose to face the water for the ceremony. Sorry if you noted this all earlier in the thread; I didn't read every post.

I made the photos for my niece's wedding in Dec 2007, and the only time I needed fill flash was when the couple wanted to be photographed with the sunset behind them

(Canon 20D and EF 16-35 at 34mm/f6.3)

and indoors for the "formal" photos. One thing you might want to consider is making one of these for your flash.

it works better outside than because it bounces the light forward and it's less bulky than a softbox
here's a link to how to make it (I modified mine) DIY Reflector-Diffuser

and now live in Florida...I used Pentax film bodies for years but went to Canon when Pentax took too long to put a DSLR on the market. I bought a K10D last summer shortly before selling my summer house in Michigan, so I have only a few photos made in Wisconsin.

Here's my grandson (on the left side of the frame) and his buddy at the Milwaukee Art Museum in August

and, in this photo, Wisconsin is on the left side of the river and Michigan is on the right...

both made with the kit lens

so, Hi all you cheeseheads!!

question about focus trap

I kinda thought that would be the case; well. I guess I need to keep looking for a K-A mount macro lens.

The sorta goofy thing is that I have LOTS of macro capability with my Canon equipment, but the Pentax is so much more fun to use.

Thanks for the help,

question about focus trap

I want to buy a dedicated macro lens and am considering an AF lens only because I can buy one without searching for a K-A mount manual focus lens. My preference for focusing with the K-A mount lenses I presently use is to use the focus trap function. Would I be able to turn off AF on the lens and use the focus trap with an AF lens?

thanks for any info on this,

Questions And Thoughts On Portraits And Portrait Lenses

around 85mm. For Pentax, I find the FA 50 f/1.4 to be a very good lens. It's very good for the fast stuff I need with casual portraits, my favorite style of portrait.

K10D; 1/350s f/5.6 at 50.0mm iso200

K10D; 1/60s f/1.4 at 50.0mm iso200

On my Canon 5D I prefer the 85 f/1.8

1/40s f/3.2 at 85.0mm iso200

I've used the EF 20 f/2.8 on my Canon 20D with good results (effective FL is 32mm)

1/200s f/5.0 at 20.0mm iso400

I've considered the 77 f/1.8, and am giving it more thought since I see the photos made by Denis Lim.

K10D opinion needed from canon 300d (Digital Rebel) users

I also own and use the 20D, 30D, 40D, and the 5D. I own all that Canon equipment because I got tired of waiting for Pentax to get a DSLR on the market. In 2004 I bought the Canon 300D and learned to use it. While I could have switched to the Pentax cameras when the *ist line came out, I wasn't impressed. I was buying lots of Canon glass and ..... well, you get the picture.
With that preface out of the way, my take on the K10D compared to the 300D is: what's to be compared? Both cameras have their good points. The 300Ds good point is that it was affordable for the time and the pixel pitch makes for some really great photos. Paired with my 28-135 IS lens, it's a great walk around combo and I still use it. Here's one at ISO 400 and 1/8s

(click the photo for a larger view)
The 300D is a nice camera, with no decent metering other than the matrix type, which works really well. But, it's an old camera by technological standards just five years after it was first introduced. The 40D is light years ahead of even the 30D. The metering is almost perfect and very flexible. I like my 40D; what I don't like about it is the misfocuses I get (similar to the Mk3) because the cross type focus points are too robust and "see" stuff in the background that cause the focus to jump off the subject. But, it's fast and I've learned to work around its quirks.

When I switched from a Mamiya Sekor SLR in the late 70's, it was to use the Pentax line. My Mamiya Sekor 500DTL had the usual meter breakdown so I decided to switch brands as Mamiya got out of the SLR line and concentrated on MF. When the K10D was announced i waited for a whole year before I bought it. I own and use the Canon 5D and I like the K10D just as well, but for a different reason. The colors are spectacular. And, I can mount all sorts of old lenses on it with SR and focus confirmation. It's a spectacular camera. If Pentax makes a FF camera I'll buy it with no qualms. I don't find low light photos with it to be problem, and use it with the expectation that I would need a "fast" lens to get a "fast" focus in low light. I use mainly m42 and PK-A manual focus lenses. The K10D has a wonderful focus trap ability that I use in low light to great advantage. Anyhow, the K10D does fine at ISO1600, here's an example at f/3.5 in my dark office.

and... one at 1/6s at ISO800

(click the photo for a larger view)

the point of my long treatise is that it's just not a comparison that makes any sense....to me. The cameras are very different with my preference being the K10D (over the 300D) just for the updated technology alone, much less the superb image quality and lens backward compatibiluty. Sometimes I like it better than any Canon I own.

Why the Obsession with Full Frame (FF) DSLRs

I have (and regularly use) a K10D, but for light rendering, the K10D can't compete with my Canon 5D. The 5D is spreading those pixels over a larger sensor and the resulting photo is more accurate looking to me. In addition, I can "see" with the viewfinder in the same way as I do with my full frame film cameras (mostly m42 mounts).
Here's a macro/closeup photo with the 5D

EXIF: 1/500s f/7.1 at 180.0mm iso400

and here's a macro/closeup with the K10D

lens is a Helios 44-2 f/2 and I used extension tubes as I don't have a dedicated macro for the K1D

and, finally, here's a macro/closeup with a Mamiya Sekor 1000DTL and a Mamiya Sekor 55 f/1.4 and 2XTC

in the case of the full frame cameras, the light is more translucent and there's more depth in the photo. Perhaps a true dedicated macro lens would yield better results on the K10D, but I haven't bought one yet. I have a whole lot of Canon macro glass, so I use the K10D to play with old lenses.
If Pentax were to go the full frame route, I'd buy one in an instant. I used Pentax for years before I bought a Canon 300D because Pentax didn't come out with a DSLR and I wanted one. The beauty of the K10D, over Canon, is the backward compatibility of lenses. I never tire of playing with it.

(Split) Marketplace Discussion Thread

I'd like to suggest that the "sold" thread not be closed until the buyer is satisfied. The PM details of a shipment are fine, but some sellers need a little urging to ship. If the thread was still open the seller's motivation to satisfy the buyer might be higher. Given the nature of the feedback system, a buyer who is unhappy with a transaction has to either shut up or risk retaliatory feedback. Once we pay a seller, it's all in their hands unless we have some way of making sure the seller will do the shipping in a timely way. Sellers don't ship and then ask us to pay. We pay, they ship. As it is, we also wait for a seller to do the right thing (and, in most cases they do). I just want some insurance. This place has to be better than that big auction site by the bay:hmm:
