A noob with a FF opinion.

nine ! it's the number of pages for discuting again and again and again and again about ff vs apsc ... we all know the answers since times ... and ... no picture ...

As a professional photographer here in France, i used to work "FF" ... I started with film olympus OMD ... had canon film ... started the "digital" adventure with a pentax k200d for personal use ... then i bought a k20d and a k7 ... and after a first k5 that was top (except af) ! ... and i was sundenly tempted with FF, just because it could give me again the "view" i was used to with film camera ... So i went canon gear with a 5D, then a 5d II but i didn't like canon bodies ...

i went to Nikon and it was superb ... with a d700, a d7000 then a D3 followed with a d3s and a d4 ... and pro optics ...

During all of these changes ... none of my client have told me about my gear or an upgrade or downgrade of quality in my pictures ... non one saw the differences !

Then one day i realised that ... like Zack Arias said ... in my pictures there wasn't as much unbelievable difference to be seen for my clients or myself (as i m not a pixel peeper ) in apsc vs FF ( but it was case with superior format ! ) ... i realised that only the confort of the viewfinder was real and significant advantage ... that having pro bodies at these years : af was effectively better 2 ...

And i realised that i was carring a lot ... and i realised that finaly ... Body was just like film ... like ink cartridge in the printers ...

And i saw the evolution in apsc body with same quality than "Pro FF" where giving : Excelent AF, all options, Burst, continuous modes, good wb ... etc ...

as i was in love with pentax design and usability since years ... i then check the k3 spec ...

As a pro photographer, i' m used to work in studio, and shoot artists, on-stage, backstage, day, night ... i realised that apsc had never limitated me and my picture quality was as i expected... i checked my Lightroom database ... and had a more precise look at my exif ...

I can asure you that if i show you my database without exif for scenic pictures : you won't be able to tell from wich body it come.

With k3 body i have a compact end versatile system that deliver unbelievable pictures in all stages in a compact bag ! ... I sold all my nikon gear and go back ricoh for my pro equipment and i'm more than happy ! pictures just pop out ! and it's a real pleasure to work with ... it's a very well balanced camera ! as good in use as a pro body like my d4 was ... but without beeing big as a fridge !

At that point ... i also have some tests with mirorless ... and it's just great and amazing ! just like i was in love working with film body ! (25 years ago OM10 ) and i would prefer ricoh giving me a real top high end mirrorless with a top apsc sensor than a FF ! ...

beetween apsc vs ff ? i totaly agree with zack : differences for working are NEGLIGABLE ... quality in viewfinder, perf of the body, WR, Burst, Frame rate, functionality and handling are THE IMPORTANT diferences ... Lens are the real invest, not body ... with a good lens today i can perform the same picture for my clients with a k3, a D3s, a K50, a XE-1 or other camera ... and the result will shine.

In real world : in all complicated spots ( scenic, hard light ... ) Apsc iso 3200 is more than enough with a good lens and deliver as good quality than FF, iso 6400 is good for hardest situation and quality is great ...

Night photography ? No one shoot the quality at 100 000 iso but use tripods ... in sports ? a K3 6400 with a good 2.8 or 4 prime lens is more than enough to get the shoot ... Not so long ago, my d3s didn't do as much than the k3 : same quality but 24 Mpix ! ... in studio ? i managed enough light and primes lenses : on those apsc bodies i have an awsome quality ... for extra or very very beauty i will use big film format or 645 like ...

So comparing what ? a body that is like an ink cardrige and will evoluate every 2 years but coast more (have a look at a d4 price and what gives real more than a k3 ??? ) ? a camera that doesn't realy do so much ? a camera that will hurt you to cary ? ...

Just put your apsc in it's real limits and you won't need something else than your "photo touch" to be in National Geographic or some good newspapers ...

Talking about sports ... great ! ... i was shooting sport for press one day ... than the day after i saw one of my picture in a local magasine ... great ! ... when i saw the printing quality ... i was crying ... : why am i so disturbing holding such heavy systems when pictures will be printed just like a stikker ? ...

Zack is right and i agree with him : there's no job i can't do well with last generation apsc sensor ... FF doesn't gave me very much for the coast, Kg and less compacity ... what was realy true 6 or 8 years ago, when apsc were bad at more than 1200 iso and only FF where delivering good at 3200 isn't true today ... APsc (some of them ) shines <= 6400, do great job at 12800 ... so why needing more to cary ? ... taking without flash a marathonian in the night without light at 240 000 iso for a press picture of 5x6 cm printed in black and white on a recycled paper ?????????

best for me at the moment : Pentax K3 and some Mirrorless i won't do the promotional here... then YOU ... just do the job !

Here is my point of view and experiences as a pro photographer ... and i won't return Pro FF body ... but apsc for the job or medium format or more (film) for the extra quality ! : Pentax understood that ... everything else is marketing based on frustration ... and i m sory for my poor english ;-)

So tell us : in the way you picture, What are those things you can't do with a k3 and good prime you could do with a d4 and equivalent good prime ????

@ Pentax : i don't need FF anymore, give us a great great great mirrorless APSC with a demoniac sensor and a pure big EVF and all functionalities of the k3 ! and it will be dream ! and give us opened lenses !!!!!

And for those who doesn't believe and want FF and couldn't wait : do you know that you're not married with an industrial ?

Just take what you think you need and you can buy if it makes you happy ;-) but take pictures that speak ! and think about it : what you will carrie for hours and hours and hours all around the world ! ;-) ( i not so long ago do a report of 2 days long non stop ! i was proud to carry not much and comming back with 2800 pictures with only an apsc and 2 lens that were fiting in my pockets viewing some friends with their top gear incredible bag ( show room bags !!!! ) such suffering caring them ! )

And i also agree with dave : what was good in FF was viwfinder with a 50 and "all eyes opened" ;-) you should try some of the last mirroless apsc with big evf and a 35 attached and you 'll be surprised ...

Some are looking for a full frame, some are looking for compact camera, some are looking for betters af motors, some are looking for da aperture coupler ...

And some don't matters and are making enormous pictures with their very well balanced K body ... It's the oldiest story of the world ... THE GREANEST GRASS ...

But how many of us do realy regulary have been locked and realy limited while using the enormous k3 and with such an emergency ?

isn't it just a simple complex introduced by the others while they don't have limited lenses, full wr ... ;-)

If tomorrow, god was coming and taking all your ricoh pack and gives you same elements with a d600 ... What will you say ? " Ok i'm a ff photographer, i 'll be famous ! "... Telling that af points are more centered when users talk of that point since the FF was launched ? Asking when will Nikon gives more double cross and 2.8 sensors as sensibles than -3il like Ricoh do with k3 ? Asking when will nikon gives you in this segment better wr ? asking when will Nikon gives you a monitor that rotate viewing setting when in portrait mode ? ... A better memory for continuous shooting ? Asking for a medium format ? Asking for a pro apsc ?...

In each paturage you will see advantages and disavantages ... it's the logical market rule and evolution ...

Grass is not more green anywhere else ... each others have advantages ... Just choose the system that gives you pleasure and just shoot, no maters what your interpretation of one could say can be because none of them could speak free ... and you won't know the true story in the name of "industrial and commercial strategy" ... and it doesn't matter ! ... ;-) the only frustation you should have is not in what camera you have or will have or not ... it's on your picture "famousness" ... ;-)

The only thing that matter is : Do you take pleasure using your camera ? Does it permit you to take all the pictures that you want ? Does its functionality gives you entire satisfaction ? Do you say "woahooo" when viewing your print pictures -> if not : is it you fault or the camera/manufacturer/Segment model one ?

Just saying : "Ricoh is dead" because there's no anoncement for a FF this Month is just like saying "Nikon is dead" because there's no anoncement of a pro apsc this month or MF this month ... it's not real information just a personal point of view ... just like saying " Oh my god !!!!!! what appened ????!!!!! i couldn't take pictures anymore with this system !!!! it 's unbelieavable and unuseable !!!! they didn't anounced a new camera this month !!! ... So looser they are !!!!!!! ... i won't shoot with anymore ... i'm gonna die ... " (joking) ...

isn't it ?

"With C25->on it's just weird. It will take single shot but as long as you hold shutter button, you can hear sensor stabilization going on. It's just not taking any pictures!"

I agree with you here ;-)

Keep calm ... ;-)

There's absolutely no bug and trouble with af off using rear af button when continous shooting and constant af ... Just put these setting to your camera :

- C3-16 : 2 or wathever you want ...
- C3-17 : 3 or another setting ...

AND !

C4-25 : 1 - OFFFFF !!!

And it will work great ;-)

It's so logical ... No need for ré-engeeniring... ;-)

before paying for lenses that won't resolve the way you're shooting indoor you should offer you a 1/2 journey for a photo lesson to learn how to manage a reflex, what will be your limitation and your need to succeed ...

that's what i think 2 ! ;-) ( and i was thinking one time that it was the pentax way of photography, a pentax feeling ! ;-) ) ...

more important to me is to have the feeling ! : the feeling with my camera, the feeling with my customers, the feeling of the time, the feeling of what i shoot ;-)))) Material just help me to do easily what i want ;-)

If in a shooting day, i don't have the feeling with people for example, if they are boring with me ... i can do what i want and have the best camera ... i will fight to have THE picture ;-) ... if felling is here ... it will be more easy ! ;-)

but ... we re flooding ... the object here is : pentax full frame camera ! ... so ...

WHEEEEENNNNNNNN ?????

I used to work as wedding photographer, but i m also director of photography for french humorists ...

I've had Nikon, Canon, Pentax bodys ... for weedings, I only work in France for big ceremony and ... I 've choosed now to work with only furtives Pentax K5 ... why ? Because it's a great body, light, giving me quite equal quality to my D3 ones !

Canon's body like 7d, 5dmII i was using didn"t enjoy me : plastic made, not great focus for the 5dmII, not real better picture than my k5, not enjoying to control ... for me it has always been 'has been' body ! ... i 've sold them within 6 months !!!

Nikon ? i still have one and won't comment as i love it as my pentax !

I enjoy a lot the rendition of the k5, well balanced, well contrasted, it's the only one that gives me the feeling to work with "argentique".

Choosing Aps-c ... instead of full frame ? ... For same price, Find me an equivalent for a 127 1.4 ( 85 1.4 cropped x 1,5 ) like a 135 1.4 on ff and i will enjoy !

For the moment, K5 + 127 1.4 ( 85 1.4 or a 30 1.4 or 50 1.4 ) is a best combo for weddings and low-light shooting like party ! ... For the price, i never saw elsewhere this equivalent of such a combo with 135 1,4 mm etc etc ...

I work so with 2 K5 setting them with different lenses : 30 1.4, 50 1.4, 85 1.4 and 16 50 2.8 & 50 135 2.8 ; 2 x Flash AF360

It gives me the best and furtive way in weddings, but i also work with a d3 as a full frame when needed ... when needed ? : now only for very very fast action and compo and when i need to manage more my bockey with full frame, also when i need raw that i can develop very quickly ( 12 Mo ), when i need a precise balanced softness that the 24x36 can deliver better to me, when i need to work real lens without crop ... waiting to see what pentax will deliver us one day !

For studio when time and money is given to create best, or in weddings for best studio (in or out) pictures and when specfic back plan and bockey is needed i used a 645d whe had bought with some others photographer i know, because no other format can deliver such back bockey ...

On a wedding day ? when a geek dad photographer asked me ( very marginaly) what i' m working with, showing me he has a brand new canon ? i 'm used to answer thant i work with my eyes, my head and my hands and my experiences to deliver best pictures using best lenses no way the the body ... ;-) , other times, i answer that i work with a smile !

at this point of view, i must tell you that all my bodys had been modified with black gafer as "no name" ones, same for optics.

It's very very unusual for me to see some people coming to me to ask me what i m working with ... but it always makes me laugh because when someone comes too me with that asking it's always turning in "can you explain me something i didn't understood on my canon ? " or "can you deliver me some tips ?" ...

Prime lens and practice makes advantages of a photographer ... not the company name of a body ! ...

i 'm so used to see people with last canon FF equiped with an entry level transtandard zoom being proud of their body but didn't suceed taking picture without flash in a church : of course at f 5.6 with a 70 210 3,5 5,6 ! or didn"t succeding for a quality picture because their body are not calibrated and lenses not adjusted ! the more of them use in P modes, take iso at max ... !!! ...

i prefer my k5 with primes that are very furtive and less disturbing for people (as the shutter 2 is very furtive ! imagine in a church the advantage !!!!!!! ;-)))), and if a body fall and break down ... it's a better controled invest !

Let me tell you again that it's very marginal that people matter with my equipment, and i must tell that in 95% of my activity, no one mater what i m working with, it's my affair as i deliver satisfacting pictures they are waiting for and they paid me for !

For the moment, my combos K5 + D3 for full frame is the very best for me till pentax will wake up showing me what they can do with ff ! ;-)

645 is a format "must have" for very high controled and quality pictures.

98% of my recurent customers haven't seen i have changed my bodys ! : all that matter is when they have a look on the pictures and they feel and say : "it's great pictures, i enjoy, thank you very much that's exactly what we were wainting for !!!! "

So ... stop thinking that people are looking at your equipment and Enjoy ! ;-))))

(sorry for my old poor english, i don"t practice a lot here in france) ...

What I would REALLY like to see from Pentax...

I agree then i would add that none of my customers asked me if i was working with a ff, an aps-c or a medium ... then don't matter in fact, what they expect from me is having results, high quality pictures they enjoy ... No matter for them if taken with ff or not ... As a pro photographer i put the pressure on myself, alone ... if needed big size pictures with extreme quality, 645d is a good friend, buying it or just renting for special service ... for the rest, k5 is a pleasure to work with but objectively what i would like to see, not talking again about more lenses are :

- A much much much more accurate AF, no matter if staying in 11 points but smaller ones and more precise ! ===>>> let's wait some test for the new k5 II !
- A new sensor, no matter if aps-c or not, no matter if 16 Mp ore more, but still better in high iso
- A new grip, smaller, with integrated wi-fi !
- A NEW SOFTWARE Lightroom like, dedicated to Pentax wich will have ability to read camera settings like my personnal parameters for neutral in raw !!!!!!!!! and wich would communicate with it is for me IMPORTANT ! The actual one is a real joke !
- New Battery with more and more accuracy !
- Better quality control, not to see butons jumping, miror double flipping ... and such smal details that deserves !
- More functions avalable on setting butons ! would like the raw one to be able to control some elements like menu C 1-6 ore some others !!!
- Double card slot !
- A new model of eye piece (like the 1,2x in design) but with an integrated "mask" for availability to not having to cary those little pieces that i lost every times !
- A new mode, giving me the possibility to put in the camera my own curves
- Advanced flash feathure and control
- Replacing battery metter with a % one ... ?
- A x 1,4 f 2.8 converter all lens compatibility
- A mettering system that will be real time when C1-6 is on ! not giving the real mesure when map is done ( actualy he gives the mesure like with c1-6 off, then when map is done it gives a new mesure ... why not having the good one in real time directly when c1-6 is on ? )
- More settings for burst mode ...
- Keeping the iso program mode with its options but adding a min shutter speed one ...
- Avalability to lock aperture and speed wheels

...

About full frame, no mater for me but will be good for more control ... i prefer wainting a very good Pentax one, with full possibility like using like nikon makes all lenses... i prefer wainting one or two year when lens park will be adapted than having one right now, not complete and without good lenses ... it's not as urgent as my actual system satisfied my customers ...

- Ending ... A REAL PRO CUSTOMER SERVICE with camera lending when mine is off !!!!! when i tried a year canon and nikon systems, i was olding pro cards, if my camera broke, showing the card to the center, they were lending me a camera when possible to not stopping me working for 3 weeks ore more !!! ... a real service ! ...

I'll wait for first tests on those new k5 II & IIs bodys to comment ;-) ... remember when k5 appears ... some functionality like x cards, gps ... where missing then a firmware update was done ... in some site we can read "Last technologie sensor" for the k5 II ... Who knows today if the sensor perf are not better than k5 ? ... all we know for sure is that there's a better af ... wait october and see ... perhaps it will not be the only advance ... not ? and perhaps a firmware update will add feathures not included in the previous models ...
