120 -400 mm Sigma not working on K-1 , BUT works on my old K-3.

Send the lens to Sigma a second time. After the second trip in and a board swap my lens works. It seems like Sigma doesn't have a K1 to test on so they try one fix, send the lens back, then do a different fix that actually works on the second trip.

Careful adapting K mount lenses (like the M 50mm 1.7) to full frame Canon cameras. I stick to M42 lenses on my Canon 5D because the aperture lever on the K lenses can hit the mirror in the camera.

It is possible to unscrew or cut off the aperture lever and the shield that protects it on K lenses but that will hurt resale value in the future. On an inexpensive lens like the M 50mm 1.7 that may not bother you.

Another problem to look out for is that some M42 lenses have rear elements that stick too far into the body on Canon full frame cameras when they are focused towards infinity (distant objects). I haven't caused any permanent damage but I did lock my 5D mirror up a few times testing lenses like the Super Takumar 50mm 1.4.

Have fun with your adapted Takumars, I have a 20mm and an 85mm that are waiting to be tested when I have some free time.

To follow up my 120-400 went back to Sigma a second time, they updated the board and now the autofocus works. The fit of the new mount to the body is a bit sloppier than it was with the original mount but otherwise things worked out alright. Even though the invoice for the original repair had a line item for re-chipping the lens apparently it didn't happen.

A new control board for my Sigma 70-200 HSM II. One trip in to Sigma to swap the mount and a second trip for the board and now it will actually focus on the K1 instead of freezing the body. Hopefully this means my 120-400 will reappear next week. Both lenses have been out of service since May.

Manual focus workaround for malfunctioning Sigma HSM lenses on K1

Lens ID from the 70-200 is 8 255. According to the work order I got back from Sigma they did update the software on the lens. It is possible that they put the wrong software on the lens, that they didn't actually perform the update, or that it needs a more substantial change like having the circuit board swapped to a newer version.

With an unmodified lens 1.2 works like 1.0. Sometimes the body locks up at boot, sometimes it freaks out for awhile and makes a few attempts to AF or lets a photo be taken before it freezes. In computer terms it feels like the camera is trying to process either way too much data or settings it can't understand and it is slowing down and acting erratically until it has a fatal error.

Check the thread I made after doing some more in depth testing with a friend. Taping over the HSM contacts on the lens allowed it to work properly in manual focus mode with auto aperture control.

I haven't seen any mention of this workaround elsewhere yet.

I received my Sigma 70-200 II HSM and 120-400 HSM back from Sigma service with shiny new mounts and updated software but they still cause the K-1 to lock up as soon as the body is turned on (Firmware 1.1). To turn the body off and unlock it the battery must be pulled.

In testing the lenses further with a friend we discovered that taping over the HSM contacts on the lens allows us to use a Sigma HSM 50mm f/1.4 and the HSM 70-200 as manual focus lenses with full aperture control without our cameras locking up (so far). Not really a long term fix, but at least the lenses are acting like KA mount manual versions of themselves. I will try my 120-400 on the weekend and see if it reacts the same way. Once Sigma confirms that they have a hardware or software fix that actually works both of my lenses will be heading back for another try at service.

Just had my 120-400 HSM updated by Sigma Canada. They swapped the mount and updated the software on the lens control board but it still doesn't work on my K-1. The camera locks up as soon as it is turned on and the battery has to be pulled to reset the body. If/when they have a software fix that works I will send the lens back to Sigma again.

Nikon FE (which may or may not work, need batteries to test) and a pre-ai 24mm 2.8 which may find its way onto a Pentax mount eventually.

I bought both lenses with full frame bodies in mind. I wasn't really planning to get either but the price (from a dealer) was too good to pass up. We will see what happens in the spring but I expect that full frame ultra wide lenses will become scarce for a few months when the new camera launches just like FA 645 lenses did when the 645d came out.

Found a nice M35mm f/2 down the street.

Maybe someday I'll have time to try it out against the SMC Tak 35 f/2 and the Tak 35 f/2.3.

I went in the other direction with my laptop since I wanted something usable but cheap and disposable. 5 year old computer out of a junk bin (dead hard drive) with a new SSD is fast enough for watching movies and internet browsing without being flashy.

Epson V500, $2, new condition except for a missing 120 film carrier.

Looks like the original owner couldn't figure out how to disengage the transport locks to release the scanning and light heads and thought it was broken.

Anyone with experience on prescription safety glasses?

I went with 3m eagles; $50 frame and $100 lenses with an included brow guard for extra protection when grinding or welding. They lenses are uncoated so that they are easier to clean and I don't have to worry about solvents stripping the coatings (which happened to my Mother's regular glasses a few years later when she wore them to paint a wall).

I knew I would be working around a lot of metal dust, welding, grinding and doing electrical work. If you are in a less intense field you may be fine with something more like a regular pair of glasses with permanent side shields. One of our local optometrists has 30 or more different safety frames in stock for people to try on. I would strongly suggest calling around to see if there are any stores in your area with samples since safety glasses, like regular glasses, come in many different styles and the much heavier impact resistant lenses can make a pair that fits poorly very uncomfortable, particularly if you are doing manual labour.

I expect that we are going to see a whole stack of cancellations again. The chain has 3 physical locations and I doubt that they have as many as 2 copies per store of their higher value clearance merchandise (*unless the person making the chain's inventory buying decisions several years ago was very bad at their job) . With a reasonable sounding guess at somewhere between 1 and 6 copies of any given clearance item and a webstore that doesn't take inventory levels into account your chances of making a successful purchase aren't very good unless you are one of the very first people to decide to buy.

I do wonder how long some of the clearance merchandise has been kicking around on store shelves - those DBG-2 grips and D-LI50 batteries were discontinued with the K20d in 2009, and they could be several years older than that. Several local stores cleared out their remaining D-LI50s at $5 a piece years ago.

90-105mm for Canon

I picked up a 100mm f/2 last week to go with a 40mm STM on a 5d body. I'm liking the 100mm so far, it is quite good right from f/2. The connection between the hood and the lens (4 retracting tabs) seems like a weak point but it will be fine if the hood doesn't take any hard knocks. At roughly 3 inches wide and long ( a bit wider with the hood reversed) the lens fits nicely in a small bag. I was seriously considering any one of the 85/1.8, 100/2 or 135L/2 when a 100mm showed up at a decent price.

There are some bad habits to overcome from shooting with a stabilized body for so long, the biggest learning curve has been to keep the shutter speed at 1/125 or higher. Like you I have plenty of macro capability with my Pentax system so I was looking for something different that I couldn't easily duplicate with equipment I already own.

I expect you could probably find one for $350 or less used in the US. B&H has the 100mm f/2 up for $450 and the 85mm f/1.8 for $370 new right now after rebates,

One eye sees with a blue tint and the other with an amber tint. With both eyes open the colour pretty much averages out. How strongly I notice the effect depends on the colour of the ambient light and of the object I am looking at..

Built myself a Canon 24-55mm f/4-5.6 OS II as a cheap wide angle to use on my 5D. OS and AF are intact. Also found an Ee-S screen locally, and discovered that my Nikon FE screen fits the body.

Watch those stop down levers on K lenses, the 5D's mirror probably isn't going to clear unless you modify the mirror or the lens (hence all the mutilated Pentax lenses out there and the development of mirror shaving).
