I took this photo while travelling back to France with my old K-r and the K 50 1.2. I don't remember the aperture but it was probably around 5.6

Here are two samples of the Takumar 58mm @f2.

I like the soft background of the Sonnar design :)

Pictures taken with an Olympus without post processing. ... I wait for the fullframe.

Thank you for this information. I will check it when I come back home.

Update: It has these 500, 200, 100 shutter speeds, so it's an AP.

It's nice to see that most of film SLR followed this design

I don't know screw mont cameras but mine has not "S" engraved on the top and the shutter speed is 1/500 so I guess it is a AP.

I think it is an "Original": Max shutter speed of 1/500 and no "S" or "K" written on the top

What's in your hiking kit?

I have a similar kit except the Tamron 17-50:
MX and K-r
Sigma 12-24 (with aperture ring)
Sigma 28mm Mini-wide II
Pentax FA 50 (or K55 1.8)
Pentax A35f2.8 (or K35 3.5)
Pentax 55-300
filters
(tripod)

This is not "optimal" in sense that I can't use the 55-300 on film camera. I am looking for alternatives in the future. For AF, I am planning to get the FA35.

Otherwise you are true about the kit. I think if you take too much gear, you spend too much time thinking about the best combo body + lens instead of shooting.

Samyang 50mm f/1.4 AS UMC

... it seems to have the same specifications than the A50 f1.4. Hope to read a comparison/review.

PS: I have no link with neither with the company nor any distributor.

Why are M Lenses so cheap!

According to the market theory, you have two+one effects:
* "Demand and supply": The M50 f1.7 was a base lens, hence the supply was (and is) high. Today, its the same for the 18-55. It comes as a bundle and if you want one on the second-hand market, it is easy to find and not expensive. On the other hand, there exist lenses with "advanced","special",... purposes like te 20, 85 mm which production number is lower, thus their price is expected to be higher.
* "Confort premium": If you use a "K" or "M" lens, you have to focus and use the green buton. This latter step is not necessary when using a "A" lens. The FA lens do not need the focus, so the price of a M is expected lower than an "A" which is lower than a "FA".
* "Information": The two previous points are true in a perfect market where all the participants are informed. I said the price is "expected" since in several trades the buyer does not know the value of the lens: You can find a very nice lens with a film camera and make bargains but the buyers sees it as an useless, old fashioned object...

a wide angle for around 500 USD

You have various options: fixed like 15 limited and Pentax 14mm (nobody talks about it); Samyang 14mm or zoom like Pentax 12-24, Sigma 8-16, 10-24 or 12-24; Tamron 10-24.
For your budget, I think you can find some of them new or used. You have already seen the comparison among the zooms in the in-depth review section.

I my opinion, you have to focus on your selection criteria. Ultra-wide lenses are complex, hence are compromises in the price, distortion, sharpness, focal length... Some time ago, I bought a Sigma 12-24 (first version) because I wanted a FF capable lens (I also use film) with less distortion as possible (no PP for film...). This lens is great on this point of view but my copy (there may be difference among them) is very sensitive to chromatic aberration and flare. I know the rules of the games and I have to adapt...

Any good wide angle lenses from 60s/70s?

I have several film era lenses and that's my 2 cents experience going down from 35mm (the "wide-angle" on film)
K35 f3.5: This is a very nice lens, my favorite. It has a limited apperture but a limited's sharpness :).
A 35 f2.8: This lens is not as sharp as the K but the "A" mode allows a faster use.
Sigma 28 "mini wide II": Not expensive (I paid it 30 euros) but it is a good lens for the price. The "A" mode is a nice plus. Pentax has also the M28 3.5 and M28 2.8. Both of them are cheap but the 3.5 is said to be better (I never used them)
Sigma 18mm f3.5: I bought it to have a 28mm equivalent. It has the "A" mode but produces significant distorsion (as ultra wides of the 70 and 80ies). It is OK for landscape but not architecture.

Pentax Lens for Portrait Compared to Nikon 85mm 1.4G

Among oldies there are the K85/1.8 or the M85/2 which are also good performers. The FA* beats them but they are more common and cheaper. So they can be a good portrait lens in terms of relative performance.

Most useful focal length 35,40 or 50

It is a personal choice. If I can just take one lens with my Kr, I go with the 40 or 50mm. On the ME Super, I started with the 50mm but I bought recently a 35mm and I like this focal length.

What you can do is playing with your 18-55 to see if you prefer 35, 40 or 50. You can also use Exposure Plot or similar programs so as to analyze your picture folder and to obtain a plot of your focal lengths. Anyway you can't go wrong with the lenses you mentioned.

Who is going to replace DA ltd with the HD version?

I own only the 40 Limited and its one of my favorite lenses but I won't remplace it for several reasons. First the look does not matter so much for me so black/silver; red/green :hmm:. Secondly, I am familiar with it so I prefer continuing. My knowledge is limited by my skills...not the lens . Lastly I prefer saving money for an other lens...a wide angle is coming :o

My opinion would have been different if the lens had an aperture ring + full frame compatible as I also use a ME Super...

Hello

Welcome! I hope you will learn the basis with the K1000, one of the student's camera. Try, experiment, repeat some shoots until you feel comfortable with your gear. You are true when you say that photography is not to point and shoot. When you use films, you take more time to shoot but the results will you pay back (especially B&W) if you reach the equilibria.

IMHO, this lens is a sort "super sub": There are some champions which are faster, sharper, have a better construction thus they are preferred. However, the kit lens is useful in some situations and when called from the bench it makes its job honestly. In my case, I don't own a wide angle and the 18-55 helped me in several situations. When I go out, I always take the super sub :).

Hello,

I got an A35/2.8 at a bargain price :). The lens is OK but the focusing ring a bit soft. According to Bojidar Dimitrov's Page, it shares the optical scheme with the M35/2.8 but has the A-function which can be practical on the K-r. For the moment, I will try to get confident with this lens. In the future, I can upgrade with the FA35 or Zeiss ;).

The M50 f1.7 is a real bargain: It is cheap but has excellent optical qualities (sharpness and bokeh). When used you have to be patient because you have to focus manually and then use the metering. If you find an "A" version, this second step is not necessary hence it is more practical.

Advices on 35mm lens

I use a ME Super so even if the lens had an AF, it would be useless in my case.

Ok I understand your meaning. Probably Zeiss does not launch a production batch of Pentax-mount lenses for 20 or less. Moreover, there is little demand because
  1. Pentax has a lower market share than other brands -> The market is more restricted.

  2. There are alternatives for these lenses: DA35 limited or not, FA35, Limited, third party lenses. Probably they fit the need of 99,99% of the users.

  3. Zeiss lenses have the FF capacity which is useless with current Pentax DSLR line

IMHO the production of a batch has not economical meaning. It can be frustrating for users but "c'est la vie"

Advices on 35mm lens

I thank you all for your pictures and advices. Unfortunately, I can't consider the Sigma because of the lack of aperture ring.
  • FA 31: Stellar optics, stellar build quality, suitable on film and DSLR but out of the budget for the moment.

  • FA 35: Looking at snake's pictures it has an excellent picture quality and can be used on a DSLR. Moreover, there are the Samsung versions which are almost identical except their markings.

  • Zeiss 35: Zeiss, what can be added. Optical and build qualities with the German standards (I appreciate them). It has the lack of AF but on the film it is useless. It can be found but its production is "suspended".

  • Samyang 35: A valid alternative, can be found new and has the highest apperture among considered lenses.

  • SuperTak 35: Looking at Schmidlapper's pictures, it is comparable to the 35Ltd and its optical qualities have nothing to envy. Probably, several aspects of the lens have to be checked during the purchase. At the moment I don't have a screwmount converter: If I buy the lens and the adapter, it won't be that cheap but looking at other lenses it can reduce its cost.

To sum up, the problem consists in adding more or less features to the lens. I will observe the market to find what are the opportunities. Again I thank all of you for your nices pictures and opinions.
