Q lenses ND filter - what's it's value?

I just found the ND filter useful today. Was out shooting in bright light and was overexposing even at f/3.5 and 1/2000. Turned on the ND filter, and bingo, just fine. The multi-exposure mode is fine for tripod use and blurring water, etc, but not useful for hand held and hitting the limit of the shutter speed. 2/stops of ND is usually enough. Typically I have no issue with 1/8000 and f/1.4 at ISO 100, so 2 stops from the ND takes you from 1/2000 to 1/8000, so that is like having ISO 125 and 1/8000 in terms of brightness, so plenty for most.

My point with the NEX, is that the previous images showed giant SLR lenses on the NEX, but you can put small range finder lenses on it that are much smaller and with the short flange distance the package is very small. That Samyang 35mm f/1.4 on the white NEX for example, you could use a Cosina Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 instead, and be the same size as my red NEX in the photo.

The CV 35 f/1.4 is only 29mm long, and the NEX C3 only 33mm thick, which puts the NEX with CV at just 4mm longer than the body only of the K-01. The K-01 with limited is much larger in comparison.

I say this only because people show these huge lenses on the NEX to make it look large, and show small lenses on the K-01 in comparison, but in reality, if you get a small range finder lens for the NEX it will remain very small and not give up aperture. As ogl mentioned, a Ricoh GXR, or other M mountable camera would work too, but that is much less flexible. The NEX can adapt to almost any system, but I think using a NEX with SLR lenses is somewhat pointless as it makes for a big lens with nothing to support it.

The NEX works slick with rangefinder lenses. This is a 40mm f/1.4, but the 35mm f/1.4 is the same size. They are both very tiny lenses for their aperture.

I have a red body, but with a NEX 5n or 7 in black or a black and silver C3 this looks really good:

Here is a quick lens cap modification to replace the pinch style cap from the filter ring that is not useful for this lens (the filters will vignette heavily at any focal length).

I ordered a 72mm filter protector from seller Heavystar on eBay and used the top 72mm cap in place of the Sigma center pinch cap.

I suggest using the Sigma 72mm cap on a Rokinon/Samyang/Vivitar/etc 85mm f/1.4 lens. It is much better quality than the stock cap from those :)

Looking for a bellows lens in the 100mm to 150mm range?

That is a good point, since the enlarger lens has no built in extension you can get to infinity focus with some lenses. I will have to try to find one now as I don't like only being able to focus 3 ft away :)

I find it is better built than most EX lenses. It is built more like the 100-300mm f/4 EX or maybe the 10-20mm f/3.5 EX (haven't handled this one specifically). It has internal focus window, gear reduction in focus ring, quick-shift/full time manual focus ring (a feature lacking on many EX lenses).

EX seems to be reserved for constant aperture glass in the newer lenses. So even though this is better built than say an 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM, it doesn't get the EX as it is f/4.5-5.6. The only part that feels slightly cheap is the AF/MF switch by the mount that is mounted on a plastic plate. The only other explanation I could see for the lack of EX designation is the lack of filter support (which a pro might want).

Thanks! I didn't know I can add lenses, was looking to see if I could earlier. I will take some photos of the lens itself tonight and see if I can't get something up :)

A good value lens is the Pentax 135mm f/3.5 lens. Any of the variants from the M42 to K mount are good. Remember you will get less magnification from your bellows using a longer lens, but a further working distance (which is what you wanted).

I have Pentax Auto Bellows A with a Tamron 200mm f/3.5 lens that I like a lot.

Hi everyone, I don't get to these forums much (mostly on DPR), but need to get over here more.

I wrote a review for the 8-16mm here:
http://erphotoreview.com

I have resolution test charts, distortion, and lots of full size samples.

Overall I think it is a great lens, but it has a significant amount of barrel distortion at 8mm, and some corner softness through the range (worst at 8mm). The lack of filters is a valid turn off for some users (especially those that need dark ND filters for long exposures). My preference is for the 8-16mm first, 10-20mm f/4-5.6 second, and 10-20mm f/3.5 third, but others might differ.

Also, I have a brief review at Amazon, vote if you find it helpful or not!
Amazon.com: E. J Tastad "ejt"'s review of Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM FLD AF Ultra...

Thanks, and I hope to bring more reviews. I will create a review for the lens on this site as well.

Canon lens on K-Mount

The only issue is if it is an EF series lens you will not have aperture control. Canon EF lenses all use electronic aperture control.

Canon is like the AB+ of blood, it is the universal acceptor, but can't donate to anyone else but another AB+ person :)

Nikon lenses are generally easy to convert to Pentax mount, and those with aperture rings can be used with minimal fuss.

Here are some samples I took with the DA 55-300mm on my ZX-L using Kodak E100S. These were most likely taken wide open. Vignetting appears worse in the mid-range, than at 55mm. Virtually none at 300mm, but it is NOT a full frame lens, although the rendering is excellent, it would require a slight crop.
