Give them a reason why to get into photography

LOL, I know the feeling! I got back into photography around 2 months ago and in that span I got 2 bodies (K20D and K-5) and 5 lenses (M 50mm F1.7, M80-200 F4.5, Takumar Bayonet 135mm F2.5, 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 WR, and a K 55mm F1.8 is coming my way). It is quite an addiction. I love the old glass, even the maligned Takumar Bayonet! They are all sharp and have a little bit of pixie dust sprinkled in:lol:.

I see that you didn't get a 135mm yet, I implore you to get one!

I love the idea of this thread!I Unlike other contributors to this thread, I think a lot of beginners would be open to buying a DSLR as their first camera. A lot of young folks are getting into film photography when they weren't even around when film was the only thing available (LOL)! I don't think DSLRs are much more difficult than film SLRs to operate and a lot of beginners probably have some understanding of ISO, aperture, and shutter speed through using their phones. I actually think a lot of people would want a more tactile, physical experience than using their phone, and the DSLR can provide such experience. I think one of the huge hurdles is costs, as a lot of people probably don't want to get into an expensive hobby in this post 2008, post COVID economy.

Nonetheless, I believe that this might be one of the better times to get into ILC photography even though ILC sales are down dramatically, because a lot of cameras have depreciated significantly and one can pick up a lot of good camera gear for relatively low prices. Interestingly, ILC photography has become one of the most attractive alternatives for budget conscious beginning photographers, as the price of film bodies have gone up and the price of digital bodies have come down. Also, as the OP mentioned, if one is not really interested in using the latest and greatest phone one can get by with a $200 phone and a $250 DSLR kit, at lower cost than the latest iPhone. I'm not sure about the cost of P&S cameras, but DSLRs have come down so low in price that it basically is not worth it to buy a P&S, especially with your phone available.

Pentax is quite competitive in the low price realm, mainly because it has a huge trove of vintage lenses that you can get for quite cheap. Of course, one would probably have to be open to focusing manually to get the most out of Pentax's cheap vintage lens lineup.

My suggestion for the super budget conscious would be:

Body: Pentax K10D, K20D, or K-7, or any of the semi-pro bodies that can be found for under $200. These likely have very intuitive menu and button placements and have a lot of features that newcomers will appreciate, such as a bright pentaprism viewfinder, 2 dials, SR, reliability, and WR. Note, if one is interested in getting a manual lens, it might be better to get a body that has at least some sort of rudimentary live view function, which would exclude the K10D.

Lens: 18-55 Kit lens for under $40, 55-200 kit lens for around $50-$75, and one or more manual vintage primes for under $50. Choice will likely be between any 28mm F2.8, 50mm 1.x, and one of the multiple 135mm F2.X to 3.5s. At a little more money one could choose one of the cheaper automatic primes, such as the DA 50mm F1.8, DA 35mm F2.4, and DA 40mm F2.8XS.

For a beginner who has more money, I would recommend:

Body: Pentax K-5 series and beyond, for around $200-300.

Lens: 18-135 kit for around $150-200, or 18-55 and 55-200 kit or 55-300 kit (around $100), 1 or more manual primes at around $50, or around $100-150 for automatic primes.

As photographers on a budget we will have to sacrifice some conveniences, such as AF, sharpness, ISO, and aperture. Most beginners on a budget will know this, however, and if they go with the Pentax K-5, they will have little to complain about, except for maybe AF speed. The first kit comes up around $300, and the second around $500. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with accessories so I did not include their prices, so the price of the kit will likely go up based on the accessories purchased.

I have to say that I loved my K-30 when I had it, it was a truly wonderful camera. Since your budget is around $500-$700, why not buy 2 or 3 camera bodies? That would increase the reliability as you would always have a backup when you go on vacation. I found quite a few K-30 series and K-5 series cameras around 200-400 dollars in the marketplace and you'll probably be able to find them at similar prices elsewhere.

If you have multiple lenses you can probably justify the expenses by using 1 camera for longer shots and 1 camera for wider shots, or having a prime on 1 and a zoom on the other. If you go 3 cameras you can probably have 2 on your body and a backup at the hotel or in your car. A hypothetical 3 camera setup could be like this: 1 K-30 series body, 1 K-5 series body, and 1 oldie but goodie, such as the K-10D for the CCD color.

Of course, this means that you will have to accept a slight decrease in image quality/QOL features, since the cheaper cameras will be on the older side (such as the K-50 or K-5). I think that the K-30 and K-5 represented a quantum leap for Pentax in terms of IQ, so I would be perfectly fine with any but they may not be good enough for you.

Regarding the K-3, I didn't read up on anything, I just saw the notice posted on here regarding a fix for the mirror flop issue, so that's why I talked about it. I do remember back in the day that there was quite some talk about the K-5 mirror flop issue. I even remember seeing videos showing what exactly the mirror flop looks like. A search on these forums would likely show quite a few threads talking about the mirror flop problem. As I said, this is just my observations from forum posts so I have no idea how prevalent these problems were. It is very likely that the K-5s out there in the wild don't have mirror flop issues, just based on probability alone. I just wanted to give my 2c as I was in the exact same position looking for a reliable camera, and thought the OP could use some of this information when choosing his next camera.

How old is too old for you? I recently went through a similar situation because my first camera, a K-30 died only a month after I bought it. I perused the forums to see what cameras have what problems, and I concluded that an older camera, such as the K-20D would be the best regarding reliability. Below are my thoughts on the reliability of various models. Note, this is really just my perception of the various faults of the various models and is nothing close to an actual study of the reliability of each model. Also, there just is not enough information regarding the older models, such as the K-20D, so it could just seem like the newer models are less reliable, when that is not actually the case.

1. Pentax K-30, K-50, K-70, K-S1 and K-S2 (K-30 series): Aperture solenoid problem. Seems to be quite a common problem. There seems to be a fix available, and it seems like it is possible to use a camera with the solenoid problem if you only use manual settings. My K-30 died due to electrical gremlins and mirror flop. When I tried to get a problem diagnosed, the people diagnosing the problem told me that I had an issue with the motherboard. I do not know if my K-30 had the aperture problem.

2. Pentax K-r, K-5, maybe K-3: Electrical gremlins and mirror flop. There seem to be a few reviews talking about the reliability problems of the K-r, and a few forum threads dedicated to electrical problems and mirror flop. A lot of problems seem to be related to batteries and electricity delivery. There are multiple threads regarding the K-5 mirror flop problems and a few youtube videos. I think Pentax issued a statement hear on the forums regarding the K-3 mirror flop problems. I didn't look too much into the K-3, I just noticed the statement here on the forums. The newer pro bodies (K-5 and beyond) don't seem to have the aperture solenoid problems, however. I can attest that my K-30 had the electrical gremlins, although I am not sure if other people suffered similar problems w/ their K-30 series cameras.

3. Pentax K-01: Shutter problems.

I hypothesize that Pentax used some systems from previous small cameras, such as the K100D when they were making their small but powerful cameras such as the K-r, etc. Maybe problems developed because the K100D was optimized for AA batteries while Pentax moved on to the rechargeable batteries we see now in other cameras. Of course, this is only my opinion based on reading forum posts and I have no knowledge of electronics or camera operations at all. Take this opinion with a huge grain of salt.

Nonetheless, at $500-$700, you can likely buy 2 or 3 of any of these bodies. Also, probability wise, unless more than 50% of a certain camera line has problems, odds are that your camera will be reliable. As to my K-20D, I have only had it for about a month, but it seems pretty reliable. Crossing my fingers that it doesn't develop any problems.

How to use a pentax m lens on a DSLR? For example K3ii

I really appreciate your reply! I genuinely did not know what an iris was, so this explanation helped me understand. I did check my lenses on and off the body, and it seemed that the iris stays fixed when the lens is off the body, while the iris stays wide open when it is attached. When I pressed the green button the iris formed at the aperture I set and when I took a picture it was hard to see but it seemed like the iris formed and the shutter closed.

Sorry for taking this thread off tangent. It seems like it would be best to follow Mr. GUB's advice to see if your lens is operating correctly. If it is operating correctly I would attest to the fact that green button metering can be way off in daylight, so you might need to adjust shutter speed to taste.

Okay, wow. I did not know that. Thanks for the education. Could you educate me on what an iris is? I only know of aperture, shutter, and iso. I have been using my camera without the green button for a lot of my shots, as I know the settings I need when I shoot indoors (i.e. ISO 400, speed 1/30, aperture usually wide open or around 2-2.8). Is the iris used for only measuring the light?

Dear Duowang,

I have to let you know that I am a beginner so my advice is very likely off the mark. However, I do know that the green button metering is inaccurate. What you are explaining does sound quite bizarre. I thought that M lenses were fully manual, so the camera had no way of operating the aperture ring. I thought that once you set the aperture ring, it basically stays there and you have to adjust ISO and shutter speed to taste. Maybe your K-3 has some ability to adjust the aperture in your lens? My camera is a K-20D so I don't know if the newer cameras gained that ability.

When you operate the aperture ring off the camera, the aperture blades stay closed, right? Do they seem to move at all?

Also, could you do the following test?

1. Take a shot using your green button metering, maybe at F2.8.

2. Adjust the shutter speed with your dial to get a better exposure.

3. Keep it at the new shutter speed.

4. Take another photo to see if your shutter dial is working correctly. Hopefully the photo is darker this time.

5. Manually adjust your aperture ring.

6. Take more photos.

Hopefully the photos get darker as you adjust your aperture ring, and don't stay overexposed.

Your lens has an aperture ring, right? Have you tried turning it? One thing you should check is whether the aperture closes and opens as you turn the ring. If it does not open and close well when you turn the ring, you may have overexposure problems when you chose smaller apertures, because the actual aperture is something much larger. Indeed some lenses on ebay are sold as defective because the aperture blades are stuck at 2.8.

Once you rule out that problem, the green metering button really should be thought of only as a starting point, especially in broad daylight. I found that I may have to adjust the shutter speed a lot when I have a lot of light. Sometimes the camera suggests something like 1/180, but I have to go all the way to 1/500 or even 1/1000 to get a more correct looking exposure. I would go in with the mindset that I will adjust the shutter all the time when I shoot. The good thing about digital is that you can take as much pictures as you want. So I would take some preliminary shots to set the aperture and shutter speed to a value that looks okay and then take my real shots.

Hi, I also use an M lens (50mm F1.7) on my Pentax K20. I found that the green metering works as a starting point but you should make fine adjustments and probably take multiple shots to get your desired exposure. I would usually shoot one with the green button and adjust shutter speed to get a better exposure. If I'm outside and I have a lot of light I also turn the aperture ring on the lens itself if that is what might help get a better exposure.

Update: My search for a lens that is not sharp continues! Similar to MossyRocks I recently bought the much maligned Takumar Bayonet 135mm F2.5 on a whim and as with my previous lenses, I found that if I nail the focus it is very sharp. The following photo was taken wide open and at ISO 400 so there might be a little loss of detail but to me it is perfectly sharp.

Thanks for your comment. I am seeing that my inability to perceive sharpness may be a bigger contributor to my dilemma than I thought. In my pictures' defense, I thought they were crazy sharp when I was pixel peeping because I could pick out all the little hairs and whiskers in my subjects' faces. Maybe when I resize the pictures all the detail gets lost? You are correct that the bodies of my cats were often out of focus, due to me using a shallow depth of field in almost all pictures.

---------- Post added 04-09-21 at 11:40 PM ----------

I think your comment proves the point that a lot of lenses are sharp enough! Your Sears 135mm definitely doesn't look super sharp, but in that photo its lack of sharpness matters little. You caught the center woman's expression clearly and to me that expression gives the photo a lot of dynamism.

In your second photo, I am perplexed because I can see a lot of detail in the willow leaves, so to me the photo looks sharp:confused:. Nonetheless, if the photo is lacking in sharpness I think it actually contributes to the great atmosphere of the photo.

---------- Post added 04-09-21 at 11:47 PM ----------

Those photos are crazy sharp! I could see myself feeling the same tinge of pain if I had your HD DA 55-300:lol:. I don't know if the intense blues of your K20D are actually a problem though. The intensity of the colors and the sharpness really make the buildings pop out of the screen.

Thanks a lot for the replies, there are quite a lot of things to parse through but I learned a lot. My takeaways so far:

1. There are bad lenses, some "dogs" LOL. Some lenses are also actually designed soft! That 85 F2.8 is pretty interesting, it really has a dreamy quality to the photos.

2. The sensor matters. My camera is an older model so maybe I hit the resolution ceiling of the lenses and I can't distinguish any differences.
3. My Pentax lenses are actually good! It's not too much of a surprise they have good sharpness.

4. The viewing medium matters! My monitor is not the best, it's a $60 21 inch 1080p IPS HP monitor, so on the bottom rung of modern monitors. Also, to be honest, I do most of my pixel peeping on the back screen of my K20D, as I need to check if my picture is in focus. That's where I noticed mostly the lack of difference in sharpness. I did do some pixel peeping on my monitor but it seemed to confirm the results on the back of the screen so I stopped doing it after a while.

5. A lot of lenses are sharp enough! What is enough depends on a lot of factors, including the person and the purpose, so what is a dog to stevebrot may be a gem to me, LOL. I have been exporting most of my pictures 900 x 599 for convenience reasons, and I find that at that size even out of focus pictures are sharp enough. That probably means that unless I become an avid pixel peeper, most lenses will probably be sharp enough.

6. Maybe most importantly, lens sharpness probably doesn't matter that much! I would love to someday be able to take a photo like the one posted by RICHARD L. I should probably not worry about my Samyang being outclassed by my other lenses and just appreciate all lenses for what they give, and most importantly try to take better pictures! In the end it's the photo that matters, and how you got the photo probably matters very little.

Hi, this may be the stupidest question ever posted on the forums, but my most recent LBA acquisitions have me confused about everything regarding camera lenses so I wanted to pose this question here.

Background: For a long time my only lens was a Samyang 35mm F1.4. I bought it when I bought the Pentax K-30, and it was my one and only lens. As you may know, it is a very highly regarded lens known for it's sharpness in all apertures and at least to my eyes, yes, it was very sharp at all apertures and the pictures it took were beautiful, only limited by my ability.

Unfortunately, my K-30 broke shortly after I bought it and I didn't take photos for quite a while. I never sold the Samyang however, and recently I bought a Pentax K20D from a forum member to use the Samyang again. In a fit of LBA I also bought a Pentax 80-200mm F4.5, and a Pentax M 50mm F1.7 to go along with my Samyang.

Much to my astonishment (and dismay, LOL) I found that both lenses were as sharp as my Samyang, even wide open! It was a huge shock since each were less than 1/10 the price of the Samyang, and one was an old zoom lens.

Could it be that my eyes are just not trained enough to see the difference between them, or maybe my monitor is not up to par? Would I get the same result with almost any lens, such as the 18-55 kit lens or the 50/2?

Below are pictures taken from each lens. The first is the Samyang, 2nd is the 50mm 1.7, and the last is the 80-200 zoom.

Rawr, thanks for your reply. The lens is a Samyang 35mm F1.4, and for about a month I have used it perfectly, with only a few quirks (the not being able to turn edials after taking a picture bug, which went away very soon). So I don't know... I actually got it to work with a new battery, until the problem happened again (trying to get more DOF- slower shutter speed- green button to meter- freeze). Sorry, I don't have the kit lens, so I can't check if these problems occur with it. The Samyang actually is my only lens (got K-30 body only).

Hi! I am the guy who created the "Huge problem with K-30" thread, I don't know if you might have seen it (maybe you did, so you know about freezes). However, given that you will buy the camera under warranty I would highly recommend the K-30! I find the camera to be very easy, intuitive, and fun to use, and the IQ and low light capabilities are really remarkable. The only thing that feels a little sluggish to me was the startup, but that might be because I use a manual lens and have to input the focal lenght everytime I start it up (I have a habit of turning the camera off after shooting instead of just leaving it on). However, it really only is a few seconds, so I don't know if it really is of any significance.

Also, one other question... I found that I have a European warranty included with my camera but no information was filled out. It says on the warranty card that the dealer's stamp is required, but there is no stamp... are Pentax very strict about having a dealer's stamp? I was wondering if I could maybe send it to Europe to have it fixed under warranty.

Thanks a lot for your comments... I was panicking so I thought maybe there might be a problem with the sound coming out of the camera.
I think I will have to send the camera for repair or refund, if possible.
And regarding the bug report, maybe I can't file a bug report, but I hope Pentax can become aware that this problem might exist, for the sake of future cameras (and maybe even current cameras if it can be fixed through firmware). This problem came under the following conditions:

1. Low battery (Had a day's worth of shooting, did not recharge battery. The battery level seemed to be about 2/3 to 1/2 when turned on).
2. Shooting in RAW, Continuous mode (High, I believe).
3. Went from shooting at 1fps (Which I believe is normal) to 6-7fps (in RAW, so must be abnormal).
4. Later, pressed the green button to meter (lens is manual), but the shutter seemed to not fully come up (?) or jam. One should normally hear a nice clap when it comes down, and a nice clap when it comes up, but did not come up well. Because of this couldn't get a meter reading, and basically froze the camera, with the above symptoms.
5. After taking out battery to turn it off (turning it to off position did not help), on one of the reinserts and powerups, received "battery depleted" message. However, after taking out the battery again and reinserting, was able to power up, and had about 1/2 to 1/3 battery.
6. Once was able to get the camera to meter and take a picture, by changing from AF-C to MF (my brother must have touched the switch while trying to fix the camera) but later received the same problem, even in MF mode.
7. Bought a new battery, and everything seemed to work as normal (Live view, menu button, playback/review button all worked as normal, and could meter and take pictures).
8. Metered a scene by pressing green button, and got a shutter speed of 1/40. I wanted to get more DOF, so I increased the apperture (from 1.4 to about 2.8), and pressed the green button to meter again. However, this time, the shutter got jammed again, so camera froze again. The battery was almost full charge.

Sorry for the long post again, and thanks all for your comments and suggestions. I hope Pentax can become aware that this problem may exist! (even though it might be an incredibly rare case)

Thanks for the clarification! However, trying that did not help.... and I can confirm it is not the lens contact, as taking off the lens still does not allow me to go into the menu, or review my photos. Actually, I can hear a sound coming from inside the camera by gently shaking it around. So I am thinking maybe the problem is mechanical, and with the mirror system, as the mirror will never go into the up position. Right now I'm at trying a new battery (which I have ordered) or sending it back/repair.

Also, although I said that there was a lot of static electricity going on in the room I was taking pictures in, I remember that the camera was never zapped once by static electricity.

One thing to note: I remember the day when it started having this problem, I was shooting in continuous mode, in RAW. In the beginning of the day, that I was getting a very slow frame rate, as I thought was normal with RAW files in continuous mode. However, later in the day, I remember I was blasting away, shooting at the same rate as jpgs (I remember I got around 7-8 pics once with a continuous compression of the shutter, in a very short time frame). I set off the camera for a while, and later in the day this bug started to happen. I actually got it to work once (I thought this bug was happening because the camera was in AF-C mode instead of MF with my manual lens - It was in AF-C when this bug first happened, and changing it to MF made the camera work) but only once did it work, and subsequent power ons of the camera kept revealing this bug. And I remember my brother commenting on the sound that came from the camera when shaking it gently.

Do you guys know if there are any pentax representatives around? I hope they can see this, as some sort of extensive bug report of the K-30. Thanks

Thanks a lot for your replies... right now I can't buy a battery since I am traveling in China... I'll try buying it as soon as I get back home. Sadly, I can't get to the menu, so factory reset/format doesn't work. The other tricks haven't been that successful either (Auto/AF-S etc., cleaning lens contact). I'll try charging and leaving the battery overnight, and if I get home I'll definitely try the pc trick (currently don't have the line to connect with pc)..

As an update, I've kept trying to turn it on, and now it seems that turning the dials actually changes the shutter speed, in both the lcd and viewfinder, but the other buttons are still not functioning as usual. In this state, I can turn the camera off if I don't go into LV. However, now the camera just doesn't turn on sometimes (need to take out and reinsert battery to turn on).

Thanks everybody a lot for your concern and suggestions. I'll keep you updated if there are any improvements.
