Is time to change camera Samsung Gx 1S (*ist DS2)

Oh you're right. I was thrown off by the menu option about how often it updates GPS. I guess it's only used if you actually attach a GPS unit.

Cool, the camera is less creepy now. :)

Well, for a different perspective...

Like you, I had been thinking of upgrading from my K100D super, which is a really similar camera to yours. I absolutely love the K100DS, but as I was buying a tripod, I noticed the K-50 was only $300, so I couldn't resist. Well, it just arrived today.

... and I don't know. I'm 100% sure the image quality will be improved, but the new camera just doesn't feel as nice.

Some of my initial let downs:

- Rather than spring loaded doors, there are blobs of rubber that you have to shove in place to guard the power and USB ports. I hate it, and I will be surprised if they still work well after 8 years of use.

- There doesn't seem to be any way to turn off the big LCD screen by default. You can turn it off via menu settings.. and then when you cycle power on the camera, it's back on. Wasting your battery.

- You can't disable GPS, so it's also wasting your battery. (And being one more creepy tracking device.)

- The pop-up flash hook is plastic... definitely doesn't seem as solid as the K100

- It just doesn't feel as up-scale as the old camera does. The plastic doesn't feel as nice (obviously this is totally subjective, and could easily just be an "aw, it's different" reaction on my part), the wheels don't feel as nice and the battery compartment door just plain feels fragile compared to the K100 (it might not be fragile, but the old one feels like a tank in comparison). There's not top LCD.. which I knew, but it still sucks.

Now, I bought it because I wanted higher resolution (6mp doesn't leave much room for cropping, and the fact that the K100 only went down to ISO200 means that its pixels were too large), faster shooting, faster saving to SD card and better auto focus.

I'm sure the new camera will be better in those areas, and that's what's important.

But I'm also pretty sure I won't love this camera in every way, like I did my old one. And that makes me a little sad.

Advice: walk around zoom (17-70 or 18-135?) and a prime

This is a really late reply, but if you're curious .. the combo worked out great! The IQ of both lenses is better than my ability, if that makes sense, and the zoom is really versatile. I do like its range much better than the 18-55 kit lens I had been using. The prime was fun to play around with, and it was nice to have when I didn't want to offend people with a big honkin camera or when I didn't want to lug a lot of stuff around.

I used the 21mm for some wide landscape shots, and I used it a lot when I was in smaller places (bars, houses, military cargo planes, etc.. :)).

Thanks very much for all the advice!

For the curious, I've chosen the 21mm Limited prime and the 18-135mm zoom. Picked up both on this forum so I only went over budget by a couple hundred. ;) I would have liked a bit faster lenses, but this combo should give me a versatile fl coverage and also be easy to travel around with.

I've got a big trip coming up and I'm looking forward to putting them through their paces!

Yeah, that's exactly what I am wondering too. I'm not sure if it was the distortion of the kit lens or simply the way things look with a wide perspective.

That's why I'd love a fast 24mm lens, to put me on that edge of wide/normal, but there doesn't seem to be one (apart from the old manual focus ones).

I'm considering getting both the 21mm and the 35mm primes, and selling one if I find I never use it...

Thanks for all the replies!

For the past years, I was living in Europe, so I did quite a bit of city shooting, but now I'm back in the west US, so it will be mostly hiking with the occasional city stuff. But even in the city, as you can see I didn't tend to take many wide angle shots.

Lots to think about...

I'm hoping to get some advice. I've been enjoying my Pentax K100D Super for about 5 years now with its kit lens.

I'm looking to upgrade from the kit for a couple of reasons: (a) I want more telephoto and (b) I never take wide angle shots because of the distortion on the kit lens. And if I'm buying a new lens, I'd like better IQ than the kit.

So I'm thinking of getting a good zoom: either the 17-70mm or 18-135mm WR. I'm having a lot of trouble choosing between the two -- any advice on which way to go?

I'd also like to supplement the zoom with a prime. Attached is a histogram of the focal lengths I've used with the kit lens. From that, a good 24mm or 28mm prime would be ideal, but it looks like one doesn't exist. :( So I'm trying to decide between the DA 35mm new or a used 21mm limited at a good price. The 35mm looks like it's exactly where I like to take pictures.. but a photographer friend is pushing me towards going wider with the prime, which does make sense to me.

Edit: forgot to mention, I use the camera while traveling and hiking. So it's mostly for low-light indoors and landscape-ish pictures with people in the foreground (who aren't moving).

Any advice is welcome! Thanks for the help!

Hi. I have a K100D super and I'm finally thinking of getting a prime or two to replace the kit lens.

Mostly I'm just posting this so I can PM people.. :)
