Let's share shots with Q!

For a long time I had a hard time deciding on upgrading to the Q7 from the OG Q. I really loved the feel of the Q as a tool and was quite happy with its results...but I finally bit the bullet a few weeks ago and i'm glad I did--the Q7 really is superior in just about every single way. Much better and quicker focusing, much better details throughout. Although the body doesn't feel as nice the shooting experience feels just as good and it still feels like a premium product in my eyes. I'd say the handling feels better than the Q, with a nicer grip and buttons that seem easier to press. And i'm loving the wider angles provided by the larger crop sensor.

Yikes. Seems like a pricey little bugger. Press release states $499 suggested, hopefully street price will be much less. I still want it.

yep! Still really love the Q, the way the card and battery load from the sides, the UI and menus. Still feels really good in the hand. I'd love the Q7 sensor in the Q body, but something Minox-sized would definitely be welcome for sure! Just this 08 lens and the upcoming macro lens and i'll be a happy camper.

I for one can't wait to add it to my Q. The fisheye has always been hit or miss for me in terms of getting sharp focus (even with peaking). To be honest I haven't picked up the Q in a few months but this will definitely get me back into taking picture mode.

Sounds like you got a bad lens...sorry to hear that. I just received mine from B&H as well, came in a small shipping box. Everything seems to work fine. Autofocus seems a tad slow (indoor lighting)...I wonder how sturdy the lens is going to be, it turns "on" after you move it from the dot to the 15 mark...hopefully it doesn't loosen over time. It's surprisingly a little lighter than the 02 lens too...weighed it on my food scale and it's about 3.5 oz vs 3.75 oz for the 02 lens (both caps on). Another thing I noticed is the focus ring doesn't seem as well damped on the 06 as the 02 lens..at least if I "pinch" it it seems to deform a little bit, although it doesn't seem to adversely affect the focusing or movement at all. It just seems a little loose...i'm not sure if this is normal. That being said, i've been practicing handheld shots and the pictures are super sharp and crisp on both ends of the zoom. Incidentally i'm noticing that Amazon has dropped the 06 lens price even lower now...(but still out of stock)...oh well, I couldn't wait to get this lens, had to have it now! I absolutely love the output so far. With all of the deals on the Q+02 right now, i'm so tempted to buy another body/lens LOL. I just absolutely love this camera to bits.

I noticed Amazon had added it a few days ago but the price seemed a little high ($359 vs $299 at b&h and adorama)...I've got email alerts set for b&h once it's officially "in stock" and hopefully it'll reflect the same status on Amazon. I've been watching some of the videos that folks in Japan have posted as it's already on sale there...I'm really hoping it shows up soon!

It seems vintage and allows me to carry the camera naked which keeps the camera as small as possible. My problem is I usually have the Q in a leather half-case which aids in the grip with a bit of protection and makes it slightly taller...which would prevent it from working with this bag/pouch. But I do like the idea of carrying the camera naked...aids in changing the battery and SD cards. The inner "step" where the lens rests is soft and padded. Hmm...still have to think if this is a keeper or not...

I just received the bag. I was a little surprised, not sure if i'm keeping it or not. It's tiny, just like the Q! It will only hold the Q and a large zoom lens attached. it's roughly 4" x 4" x 3". the pictures don't really mention the sense of scale, but it is neat little bag to carry just the camera, that's it. But I was surprised when I opened the package...it's just a tiny little bag/carrier to carry just the camera.

a bit bulkier than i'd like, I like the streamlined look of the Japanese Q10 bag

Yes, I saw that bag, seems to hold everything nicely. Seems like it's a free gift if you purchase the Q10...I couldn't find a way to actually purchase it. Some lucky folks in Japan have been able to sample it:

Not sure how the shape of the 85234 is configured to hold everything... it'll be interesting to see.

Focus Peaking for the Q with Firmware 1.1

It did with mine, which i thought was a little odd as i don't recall this happening when I updated to fw 1.01. Maybe because it was a dot.x release? I've been playing with it for the last hour with all of my lenses and it seems to work great, all the old settings work. I wonder if it matters that it was from the global/japan site... i'm just so ecstatic that Pentax provided this update!

Happened on the Japanese Pentax site and downloaded firmware 1.1

Focus Peaking is now part of the focus menu! I've tried it and it works. I have to say with the 4X magnification + peaking, it's a bit easier to manual focus now.

06 Zoom in Australia

This is exactly why I can't wait for the Pentax 06 tele zoom and try it out at F2.8. I was drawn by the tiny size of the lenses and the body itself but the quick access menus and the handling was really the surprise...I love shooting with this camera! I was really close to purchasing the Lumix FZ200 for the F2.8 lens (which if I may be mistaken, but also has a tiny sensor)...the Q is just more flexible with the variety of lenses. Even with the 06 lens, I feel like the body+lens is still going to be smaller than most bridge cameras.

Am I mental? Q or Q10

I was in the same boat a few weeks ago. I went for the Q because of the premium build quality and smaller (just) body, plus the price was hard to beat. I also liked that it came with the prime lens as I think it's a much better (though less flexible) lens than the 02. (although I bought the dual lens kit anyway). Having not had the opportunity to handle the Q10, I figured the lower price and feature set of the Q was good enough for what I wanted to do today. The Q just feels great in the hand, you can really feel the quality.

That being said, I think the Q10 will be a great camera in it's own right with the newer backlit sensor, focus peaking, and slightly better grip. I read somewhere that video quality is also improved in the Q10 without the rolling shutter effect of the Q? But who knows. Then again the Q has stereo mikes versus mono for the Q10. Anyway, both great cameras. It could be a while before the Q10 prices drop, which is why I went for the Q and I absolutely love taking it around.

There are actually several youtube videos posted that show focus peaking on the Q10 as well as the menu selection for it. I'm hoping this will come to the Q via a firmware update...we'll see.

here's the first one showing the menu selection at 0:10

You Tube

as well as the one posted earlier, also showing menu selection at 0:10 and the feature in action

Gah...replied to the wrong thread...

Another new "Q" user

Just got my hands on this little gem and all I can say is WOW! I was aware of the smallish sensor and based on the somewhat unfavorable reviews upon it's launch and high price tag roughly a year ago, I decided i'd pass. My first real digital camera was the original Pentax Optio S which I adored to bits, it was tiny and well made. Brought it with me everywhere. A dozen cameras later and In the last year i've been using the Canon S95, Panasonic LX-3, and now the Olympus XZ-1. I've been meaning to step up to a mirrorless setup but couldn't really commit to any platform yet...I needed baby steps. I was very close to buying into the M4/3 setups (GF-1, then GX-1) and NEX 5n...looking at both heavily...and I still couldn't commit. With bodies and lenses attached they were still too big.

I'd never really seriously considered the Pentax Q until the Q10 showed up last week...I did a ton of research, watched every single youtube video and review online, visited these forums, and I felt that there was something to this little camera. The DxOMark results sort of cemented my deal...that and the dramatic price drops in recent weeks. Even though it's a small sensor, it's a really really good, state-of-the art small sensor. I've been able to coax some really clean sharp shots from it sooc and i'd have to say it provides results as good or even better than any camera i've owned. And the Q handles brilliantly...I want to take it with me everywhere, it has that certain magic, appeal, that makes me want to get up and start taking photos!

It all goes to show you really can't read much into a lot of the reviews that came out upon the Q's launch...some reviewers and tech journalists just don't get it and are stuck on the sensor size. After seeing a lot of the samples on this forum, seeing it for the photography tool that it is and what it's really capable of, I knew it'd be a good choice. Hoping to learn more from this forum and I can't wait for the new lenses to come out!

Another new "Q" user in the Pacific Northwest. Somewhat new to Pentax...my first big splurge after graduating from college was the original digital Optio many years ago, the camera that could fit in an Altoids tin. I loved that camera to death and have been obsessed with all things small and tiny.

About a dozen cameras later and today i'm mostly using the Canon S95 and Olympus XZ-1 as my main cameras. The Olympus replaced a Panasonic LX3 which was a joy to use, had some yellow blotchy issues with low light but was unbeatable at the time...then two specks of dust appeared on the sensor. So onto the XZ-1, fantastic results with the Olympus. Nice blurry bokeh was achievable. Very nice results, but it still felt a bit large around my neck. At the same time, I wanted to step up to a mirrorless setup but couldn't really commit to any system, looking heavily at my coworkers' setups (micro 4/3, NEX ).

Then the "Q" appeared out of nowhere...here we are a year after it was first available (with some nice price drops) and I absolutely love it. I've been on these forums daily learning more about the capabilities of this little beast--the "Q" is just an amazing piece, with results that have been surprisingly good. It's a camera I just want to carry with me all of the time, it's an absolute joy to use!
