Pentax 6x7 not firing

Does the battery check light light up? If not try cleaning the battery contacts.

To try firing without film open the back, the turn the dial in the center of the film counter counter clockwise till it is reading >0 and while holding it there close the back. The camera should only allow you to wind once and the shutter will fire. It will keep letting you do that until you open the back again.

Your film counter isn't advancing. The shutter won't fire until it advances to the 1. There is no reason to press the safety release button, your mirror isn't locked up.

When you load the film you are supposed to have the start mark on the paper lined up with the start mark in the camera. Then close the door then and advance the film until it no longer advances which should be at the 1. If you aren't getting the counter advancing try switching the dial on the side from 120 to 220 and back and to see if maybe it frees up something in the counter. It won't advance without film (or at least backing paper) in the camera as the film turns a roller for frame spacing.

To test the shutter open the back, rotate the dial on the counter counter clockwise till you get it above the 1 and while holding it there close the back. Next crank should cock the shutter and it should fire. You can keep firing the shutter in that case until you open the back again. With no film in the camera the counter won't increase as there is nothing to turn the counter roller inside the camera.

Yes, some thing is broken or gummed up in the frame counter on your camera. Probably best to return it if you can. The reason it probably fired when you got it was the seller advanced the frame counter above 1 with the back open and then shipped it that way to you. Once you opened it to load it with film the counter reset and as it stayed under 1 the shutter never cocked or fired.

Pentax Q With Infrared Filter

" I wonder if anybody is ever going to do a sensor conversion for the Q to make it solely an infrared cam. Could be interesting."

Or make it full spectrum and change the ND filter in the lens to be either a hot mirror or an IR pass filter.

Pentax Q-S1 with Nikon 500mm F4P. Uncropped. The Q had more detail than shots I also took with a Sony A7RII with the same lens plus a 2x Nikon TC-301 teleconverter.

Fujinon CF2.7HA-L1 2.7mm f1.8 Fisheye.

The lens as delivered is a M7 mount (with a flange distance of under 2mm and a screw size larger than C mount) but the M7 mount will unscrew and under it is a standard C mount thread with the proper flange focal length. I think this lens is sold by Fujinon in a few different versions and mounts. I believe they are all fixed focus but some have aperture controls and some do not. This version is wide open all the time.

First shots playing around...

The FOV is *very* wide and many shots had feet in them. The uneven vignetting is a little odd (mostly left corners) but not an issue IMO. Seems plenty sharp (all are wide open as there is no aperture) and I have tweaked that slightly with a spacer.

Thanks, the 500mm is crazy sharp. Just an outstanding lens.

Not on a Q but....

Good point. I converted a couple of Rokinon Canon EF mount lenses to Sigma SA (using Pentax K mount extension rings) and in that case it was easy as the backs of the mounts were totally flat. There were really only 3 contact points at each of the screw holes.

I guess it totally depends upon if the back of the Pentax mount in the adapter is flat or not.

The 500 F4P is an amazing lens, every time I use it it impresses me. I didn't try the Sony without the TC301 but without it the crop would have been pretty small. The resulting crop with the TC301 in place is around 10MP. Next clear night I will try it. With it on the Q I think I was getting motion blur, the electronic shutter probably wasn't helping there. Wonder if the Pentax K to Q adapter could be adapted to Nikon mount to get an actual shutter?

The TC301 is the recommended teleconverter for the 500 f4p.

Nice, glad others are enjoying the Fuji too. It is a great little lens for not much money. As far as a lens cover I have just used a small velvet cinch bag over the lens so far. At some point I will see about trying to 3D print a lens cover for it.

Yup, that is a Q-S1 that the lens is mounted on. If anyone else want to try one check ebay for the Axis 212 security camera. They apparently have that Fujinon in them and the cameras are available cheap on ebay.

LCDs are polarized and if they are opposite the polarization of your sunglasses you will completely black out the screen. I think the screen is OK with my polarized sunglasses when in landscape but if I rotate to portrait orientation I can't see the screen at all.

An OLED display would not have this issue.

My original Q with the 01 prime had a problem with its SD card slot so I haven't used it in years. Just picked up a red/gunmetal Q-S1 with the 02 zoom and was walking around with it today.

The 02 is a fun little lens. I totally ignored it with my original Q, that was a mistake. Just ordered an 06 to go with it.

The Q has a number of different B&W modes. One of which is sort of hidden and gives pretty close to tha stark contrast look SOOC.

In the third page of the shooting menu set the Quick Dial to Smart Effect. Then set one of the positions to "Bold Monochrome" and you get pretty close to that look. AFAIK that is the only way to get the 'Bold Monochrome' effect. I also setup another position for the regular B*W mode with filter Effect set to Cyan, High/Low Key Adjust -2, Contrast +4 and Sharpening at +2. I set another position for Reversal Film and the last for Bleach Bypass with Digital Filter set to High Contrast. I leave the off position on 'Natural.'

Had a chance to try out my Nikon 200mm f4 Micro (Macro) lens today. This spider was on the windshield of my wifes car.

This is the full size image from the Olympus OMD. Lens was mounted on a tabletop tripod sitting the windshield and I was using two remote flashes. No cropping.

Full size at:

This is from the Pentax Q using the same lens setup at roughly the same distance using available light for these shots and the 2 second timer. Again no cropping.

The Q shots were at ISO 125 and due to the low light levels were at slow shutter speeds. I think both of these were at 1/5 of a second. I was using a LCD loupe to help focus.

The hardest part was simply finding the spider in the viewfinder in the first place.

" but nothing as wide as a 4, and certainly not for C Mount"

They are out there. I have a 2.5mm C mount fisheye for example. Pentax/Cosmicar has a 4.8mm C mount lens that is a nice focal length on the Q. I have a 3.6mm (I think) but it optically isn't as good as the 4.8.

"I can't find it on woot?
Is it just a daily deal thing on there?"

Woot has their daily deals as well as some that last a few days. Right now the MX-1 (and Q10 and K500) are on a deal that ends Feb. 6th.

Cameras & Accessories

MX-1 is getting so cheap I'd love to get a second one and modify it for IR.

C Mount lens shims...
Posted By Shawn67

I've tried a bunch of C mount lenses on the Q. I use the two piece C to Q mount adapters for each of my C mount lenses. That allow me to adjust the adapter so that the aperture dial is facing up for each lens. One thing I have found with these lenses is the focal range is off. Infinity focus doesn't match up with the infinity mark on the lens. Infinity is focused at a shorter range.

I ended up buying some brass shims from McMaster Carr to allow me to dial in each lens. I bought 0.01" and 0.002" shims. The 0.01" shims are too thick but the .002"s are working out well. Some lenses take a couple of the .002s. I take a picture at infinity without a shim, add the shim and shoot again. Using the built in comparison feature on the Q I compare the two shots for sharpness. If the shimmed picture is sharper I add another shim and shoot again comparing the shot with 1 shim vs 2. Continue until the lens starts getting soft again and pull out the last shim.

This is especially important for lenses that are fixed focus such as the Pentax 4.8mm and Sigma 6.5mm.

This also seems to improve the lens performance as well. I have a Pentax 6mm f1.2 lens that is actually focused at infinity at around 0.8' on the dial. It has a lot of focus shift as you stop it down. When I shimmed this lens so that infinity matches up the focus shift is nearly gone when stopping it down. It also makes it a lot easier to zone/hyperfocal focus the lens.

Shims from McMaster Carr.

Pentax Q - Cmount lenses. Recommendations?

Are you looking for wide angle or telephoto C mount?

These are Pentax branded lenses...

Some Computars..

And the rest (last two are D mounts)

As far as the adapters I would personally go with the 2 piece adapters, not solid adapters. First, the two piece allows you to orient the aperture scale to always be upright. Second, and more importantly, I find that the registration distance varies somewhat between C mount lenses. Some need to be slightly further away, some need to be closer. The two piece adapters let you shim or reduce them if needed to dial in a lens. For this reason I leave an adapter on each of the lenses I typically will use the most.

As far as the lenses themselves....The Pentax lenses are all pretty nice. The 4.8mm f1.8 Pentax/Cosmicar fixed focus lens is a great FOV on the Q. It took some work to get that lens to be sharper as the adapter needed to be shimmed. The 6mm is good too but a little odd in that focus shifts when stopped down. I haven't used the 12.5 much yet but it seems like it could work for portraits. The 25 1.4 is sharp with a very circular bokeh.

The Computar 25s are very soft at 1.3 but are sharper around 2.8. The 25 f0.95 is sharper at 0.95 than the Computars and it can have a very great look to it with razor thin DOF if shooting close up. I haven't tried the computar 8.5 yet (have 01 prime). The 3.6mm f1.2 Computar I am working on dialing in better. It needs to be closer to the camera than the mount is allowing so I have to sand one down slightly until that gets are sharp as it can.

The fixed focus Tamron 6.5mm looks like it may be interesting too. I need to spend a little more time with that one making sure the mount is correct for it.

Of the two D mounts the 6.5mm vingettes pretty badly and I haven't used the 13mm much yet.

Comparing the Pentax/Cosmicar against the Computar's the Pentax lenses seem to be optically a little better and for the most part feel better built. They also have better IRISs in them, the Computar as 3 bladed and have a triangular IRIS when stopping them down.

"I'm also finding the shutter lag very frustrating, especially when trying to catch a shot of the cat (who always turns his head away the instant I press the shutter release )"

Either turn off SR or set it to be active all the time, either helps reduce the shutter lag a little. In its default state it only activates when you take the picture and it adds lag while the system kicks in. Would be nice if a future firmware activated SR on half shutter press.
