50mm film lens vs 50 mm for digital

This is simply inaccurate. A 50mm f1.7 FF lens will not be (remain) an f1.7 APS-C format lens, but, because of the FF larger rear lens design
circumference imaging plane format "circle of confusion" spreading its rear image projection to the FF format size, that available image rendered light rated f-stop lessens by the crop factor's multiplication. The FF lens f-stop is rated by dedicated use of its imaging size focal plane, and the APS-C sensor segment lessens that when segmenting the FF lens image.

On APS-C a FF f1.7 becomes not only a 75mm lens, but an f2.5 lens accordingly at its widest aperture. This is because the light projected onto the imaging plane will not cover the same light gathering surface as that on a FF imaging plane. A DA lens, on the other hand, will be as rated on the lens in light gathering f-stop effect, because its imaging plane circle (of confusion) by design is limited to the APS-C imaging plane format size.

Why did the LX come with an A lens?

This is exactly the case, as this special camera Graphic ID body series by marketing year release went with what was being manufactured at the time as available new manual focus lenses. The earlier M series and K series were only carried forward in certain focal lengths of which there was some warehoused back stock (not much). There were available KA and KAF programmable bodies as the latest technology cameras, but, if you set an A lens aperture ring to A, not to an indexed aperture ring f stop value, it would be stuck at the minimum aperture (likely f22 to f32), so it had to be first user priority set to an indexed aperture value scribed on the ring to be used for DOF and exposure purposes for the camera to become an automatic exposure camera.

One would still have to use (a K or M or) an A (or F) series lens to achieve manual focus, with the manual aperture ring on the lens user set for chosen exposure value aperture selection and for metering purposes. Open aperture manual meter readings going to closed down point of exposure user selection then back to open aperture were achieved by the two mechanical linkages carried of the lens mount to body mount coupling (of the non AF K mount). The newer A (and F) lenses series electrical contacts were dysfunctional on the LX body. The LX shutter speed selection ring offered(s) its own "A" for camera selected metering. This could be tweaked as to photographer + or - exposure compensation from a pull up dial edge ring on the film speed ring (found below the rewind control knob).

Film advance and rewind could be automated with the add on autowinder (2 fps), or motor drive (from 2 to 5 fps). In fact, until an actual LX Motor drive was made, the earlier released MX motor drive was employed for the LX for a short season. This kind of piggybacking of earlier to later and later to earlier cameras (drives, lenses, etc.) made system upgrading attractive to earlier K mount and screw mount camera users carry overs. The screw mount to K mount adaptor is still employed.

This was the last manufacturing gasp of the popular, highly reliable, ergonomically delightful, and rugged manual focus "professional" Pentax LX camera. The only "automatic mode" the LX offered was aperture priority by camera operator on lens selection and the camera then very accurately choosing shutter speed. Its metering cell was reliable, not retaining a memory after taking an earlier through the lens sunlight exposure to achieve a shot, unlike the earlier than MX manual focus bodies CDS (vs GAP) light reading cells. Its transferred to meter aperture value (via the selected lens f stop ring), was "click" election correlated with the aperture ring read scribed f stop values, indexed by the ball bearing below the rear lens aperture ring). Why/How is Pentax such a good deal? And what is the future?

To remain a system camera enterprise, Ricoh Imaging Corporate Pentax Planning must not be limited to still imaging DSLR quality cameras preservation; it must adjust to post modern society visual occupancy space image communication. This means establishing a presence for new K-Mount cameras located among the motion media standards camera marketplace. Advanced motion imaging Audio-Video cameras are ever present among growing A-V Imaging digital media presentation visual spaces. Still image photography existed for paper based visual communications reproduction, and print media outlets, publications, and their dedicated readers. This media presence is shrinking among all visual imaging marketspaces once employing and distributing past visual communications printed paper media (books, magazines, pamphlets, subject briefs, photographs, photo prints, etc.). Many paper based daily, weekly, and monthly feature publications have disappeared completely before, and especially since, the COVID restrictions years.

Notably gone from magazine shelves are photography magazines. Who will be future systems camera users? For Pentax to survive as a systems camera enterprise, Ricoh Imaging must come out with a new mirrorless PK Mount body, with the same lens mount flange distance as the DSLR, without a mirror or Pentaprism viewfinder, made primarily for literal A-V video-centric visual communications motion image capture origination creation. Motion imaging for education, government, filmmaker, individuals, organizations, and business uses have shifted away from the past assumed value of a reproduced picture being worth 1000 words, once presented in a publication in hand.

Creative and targeted communication media, representing subjects, sales, and information intended purposes are Cultural Visual Space Occupants made so today by A-V cameras and video footage computer software editing work; occupying visual space with various disseminated media outlets now most common to our society. A Ruggedized A-V Pentax mirrorless "A-V Advantage Camera", which uses all K mount generations lenses can permit its accommodation for imaging visual spaces creation occupancy, through existing lenses use -- including features for A-V motion media follow focus by Camera system manually manipulated extensions.

Planning an A-V Advantage camera body which includes user selected lens aperture values to image recording transfer for encoded video exposure by film era forward lenses for a planned A-V Advantage camera place in the workflow of imaging creation and its editing, and dissemination visual space occupancy should be in Ricoh-Pentax Imaging creative plans. Signal a heads up awareness of Systems Cameras futures now so the once innovative Pentax quality brand does not disappear with the Visual Space future already die cast almost totally in electronic media.

Why not include as an APS-C platform basis, aperture data transfer means, and focusing augmentations for using all K-mount lenses for achieving video creations, carrying forward ability to enter focal lengths and lens compensation adjustments by dedicated camera menu selections, and beep signals notification of focus and exposure achieved, along with selectable viewfinder lights manual focus plane projected indications, AF focus indications, non AE exposure balanced lighting luminance and chrominance achievements, and AE alike controls and notifications for the AV Advantage Camera operator's achieved visual composition and DOF motion media shot and shot sequences based media creation intentions? Electronic Viewfinder visualization options, with a moveable back screen as well, and all K series lenses Open and Closed down exposure set Aperture achieved scene metered exposure MF and AF (with A-V creation intent) allows for media scenic shot visual film language creative compositions previsualization. As such, with AE camera operator selected previsualized scene exposure and focus areas highlighted, for A series forward optics K Mount lenses Advantages in camera. A body for audio-video capture keying and entering full audio-video codedec synchronization frame by frame abilities, and using all K mount lenses, is a marketplace nitch which only Pentax could create. Camera sales have not only shrunk because of mobile cell phone imaging, but because of an after 2000s Societal communications information shift to the media dissemination visual space occupancy methods and means from which there is NO RETURN. Get on the A-V visual communications roadway, or be without communication pathway Visual Space dissemination relevance, then RIP, Pentax.

The "RICOH-PENTAX AV Camera Advantage series", with K6 video resolution (and backward to 1080P, 60 fps) as its priority Pentax corporate division product development move into the post modern post COVID marketspace has bushido wisdom competitive elements. "AV Advantage Cameras" as a Business Plan advancement for teleological camera systems planning means Pentax gaining Visual Space imaging relevance. Need silent running zoom optics, need manual as well as automatic follow focus?: factor these built in and system add on accessory tools into the Pentax AV Advantage series Cameras R & D. Ruggedize the A-V Advantage camera development for environmental field use. Make it not as delicate as the smaller than DSLR mirrorless camera system bodies on the market, Carry forward the moisture sealing Pentax DSLR legacy, titanium chassis skeleton to an A-V Advantage Pentax system body. Using lenses all the way back to the straight K mount (and forward, so with K lenses mechanical aperture transfer values relay, as well as electronic aperture values relay. Adapt the last K3-iii developed follow focus system on the New Rugged Pentax A-V Advantage mirrorless body.

Lens adaptation to Sony cameras and the A-V visual space occupancy challenge. Having to buy a now available 3rd party manufacturer converter for our lenses, that will not actually carry PK mount in lens focus screw drive or silent drive motor motion imaging to video follow focus with the Sony E series cameras can be overcome by an Ruggedized A-V Advantage PK camera. Include priority videography modes, plus modern video standards for FPS encryption-editing A-V sync purposes motion image embedded post shooting editing codes. This is the future of all camera systems for professional camera makers. Why won't the 400+ dollar PK to Sony E mount adaptor achieve this without a new PK mirrorless body? Because the lens to mirrorless body capture convertor product anticipations suggest no follow focus for media sync and encryptions for A-V editing capability for creating videos. Functional issues regarding such K Mount MF, AF, and Aperture values AE evolutions, as might include MF lenses to body system focusing, lighting, and audio recording adaptation add-ons, offer only a continuation of PK lens uses for stabilizing a still photography platform function (as the PK lens image to focal plane circle becomes adapted for the Sony E series bodies).

Here is an R&D Richo-Pentax Imaging real existential business challenge as to joining a visual space imaging market: based on its past and evolving lens resource product base (new and used). So where picture scene based imaging is motion media viewer disseminated in fact; the high cost of other optical brands lenses when going to mirrorless systems for still and motion image capture intentions creative uses, can be countered by a Corporate Planning Vision for a Pentax ruggedized A-V Advantage Priority PK Mirrorless Camera as a new audio-video camera facing the outdoor "climate change environment" with the specialized Pentax K Mount mirrorless body. Such a Camera line Vision would entice many past bonded PK mount users (and entice skilled present video production semiprofessionals, enthusiasts, most students now cruising the Computer, Internet, and its "channels" as social and genre platform Communications Space. Some start-up visual space occupying businesses, educational enterprises, industry, individual, organizational, and government AV creators have already adapted available Pentax lenses for camera based manual follow focus video production.

What might foil this marketplace possibility is this Pentax Users site discovering the SONY E Mount "Cinema " mirrorless body series, and proving what the 3rd party K to E mount third or fourth generation adaptor may achieve with the SONY Cinema E Series A-V body, as is ot yet reviewed as to its advantages as a coupling system of possible motion media creation by this Forum Reviewers.

Make sure you update the K-70 body firmware, and set up the AF+-, as adjusted just for this lens, among the 20 adjustable lenses AF possibilities in the menu (as such on the K3 series bodies, I am not really personally familiar with using the other K bodies, except the K-5).

Look at my Pentax Forums, User Reviews, 3rd Party Lenses, 150-500mm f5-6.3 Sigma discontinued Legacy Lens Zoom lens review. Find it with the latest Sigma Pentax Mount lens model reviews there: with OS, HSM, APO, etc. Mine is under "Climbmountainway", as lists various possible types of long lens mounting support systems. Lately it has been carried with the mentioned monopod, or a similar sling under the arm, as others mention, above. The other most employed support system is a window mount with a medium ball head for an automobile, made by Manfrotto, of Italy (or, as perhaps used, under Bogen named window mounts or heads on ebay). I use the on lens stablization, "1", with the camera body, where I keep a slight drag, not locked down, on the monopod ball head or the window mount ball head (as such too occasionally on such a tripod alike employed head). Then the Optical stablization functions. For the Pentax long lens zoom, you would use the camera with SR on, with the camera with some drag selected on the type of support head, accounting for the changing Pentax long zoom lens focal lengths.

The problem I am told from the group who keeps our lenses CLA here in Colorado, is that unless dealing with vintage gear with available used parts, Pentax offers repair services no parts (unlike other manufacturers). Many such services would do Pentax digital repairs if camera and lens parts, other than from such parted out gear on ebay, were Pentax in a repair parts warehousing, cataloguing, and supplying business to keep its system concept up and running.

The current announced Pentax gear projects completed, of lenses and the K-3iii, have not carried the Ricoh name onto their product boxes. The Pentax name alone appears. Does a Ricoh "revival" mean the company, and peddling Pentax in the corporate marketplace to Ricoh's advantage, or to another corporation, dealing with the post COVID and COVID marketplace reality, or something else? Time and the industry marketplace will tell.

Pentax past announced that its next camera would be a video based camera. Canon, Sony, and Panasonic all make separate extensive professional and enthusiast shooter video camera lines. Pentax would be ill advised not to do the same (because of all the legacy and current lenses availability) as part of their business growth model.

Many independent videographers with minimal budgets adapt older Pentax lenses to video camera systems, in order to keep an affordable array of lens choices. Though many dedicated video lenses maximum and stopped down light transmission are measured in T-stops, in addition to f-stops, it is no longer a vital or critical specification measurement, as it was in the film capture days. To carry out film based motion shooting and production location setup goals, knowing the light that came through to loaded fixed light sensitivity film based motion cameras was vital to exposure and lighting, so separate lines of motion media lenses were then historically so established. Dependability and consistency of exposure, sharpness, depth of field, contrast, color, etc. was thus insured. And, being specialty lenses, per se, they held a unique market and were priced accordingly.

If I understood the Pentax development team correctly, we can anticipate a Pentax dedicated interchangeable lens K mount video camera as the next team design. Perhaps too the newer more compact and yet powerful battery types coming into the marketplace will be planned for such a camera, and as to planning and anticipating its videography power drain and charging needs?

Unless the entire imaging pathway is very much altered, meaning going to a computer capable of handling extremely high res files, and delivering them through the latest Mega Graphics cards and latest highest res monitors, you will not see much difference. And, that raises the bar only for those who can view output at the highest possible resolution. Those folks are generally into other camera systems, with higher inherent resolution captures, up to three times what the K1-II can do. For most, their present MP camera and lenses learned and trusted workflow gear works, along with an existing editing program or two, and does not warrant upgrading the entire imaging pathway editing and output system, perhaps with a minimum of $10,000 in purchases.

Do you do large prints? In house? With what grade of printer? The same pathway challenges present in that output pathway. Do you have your own screened distribution system for displaying your images to audiences or an audience?

So if you wish to look to see improvements using the gear or choices you describe you may be climbing the wrong tree in the forest of trees. You may wish to consider the new independently made AF PKFA full frame lens adapter to the ten or so full frame Sony mirrorless camera bodies, to get the most out of your existing full frame Pentax lenses. Perhaps some supposed factory distributors cannot obtain parts because there is no parts warehouse in the Philippines, Viet Nam, or in Japan for Pentax. They seem to warehouse items with a sales catalogue number only. Back in the Day, when there was a Pentax USA, in Golden, Colorado, one could drive there with a parts diagram with reference numbers in exploded views, and get the part over their counter. I bought LX parts then direct. Since the turn of the Century it seems to be a losing proposition. Perhaps warranty work would be conducted in Canada or the UK if one had an out of the USA address for return? Bare bones backup on gear sold is never helpful as to gaining a loyal following for a gear name brand. Who else repairs Pentax in the Continental USA? Can they get parts, or are we following another propagated video concept, rather than a literal camera system reality??? Perhaps the lack of shutter block failure responsibility on non flagship cameras shows an enterprise only based on "buyer beware", rather than buyer beatitudes.

On carrying gear for hiking. I generally have a subject goal in mind, or area visitation goal, or seasonal, or day (or part of day) length outdoor photography goal in mind. Is it an easy hike without much elevation gain, or a more difficult hike with elevation gain (or loss, then regain, which may later require hiking up and out of a valley or park area)? Then the gear is determined and the carry bag likewise. For example, if going out after birds or animals found at a distance, among trees, in flat open areas, among foliage, or of hills or mountains: the gear, bag type, and camera extra support are selected accordingly. I also use the K3 as the basis for making up the image acquisition gear kit for such activity. Scenics, subject specifics, time of day, type of terrain, weather, summer or winter, angle of light considerations, duration of engagement, personal body maintenance carry needs, food and water, and foot stability are all basic and vital considerations.

Mixing a journey basis personal pack with the camera bag is accounted for, as to carriage considerations as being primary, before any additional photo needs configurations. A shoulder bag with a wider webbing strap which is comfortable under a shoulder backpack strap is best. I carry and use, or store on my pack (depending on personal stability needs by terrain type), a hiking staff with adjustable length, and removable top under which is a tripod head thread for its double duty. I learned to hike with weight in mountain terrain, back in the day before two poles became popular, so find such a staff as an on again, off again, in hand personal walking and photography item.

The bag for gear usually is balanced with a backpack for personal needs, for venture duration, and situational changes and/or challenges. Is it an afternoon hike, without weather challenges, or an into wilderness excursion, with changing weather, perhaps requiring setting up a base camp, or carriage of gear for overnight stints?

I may or may not take the battery grip and extras such as filters, individual lens pouches or related field use camera weather coverings, solar battery charger, more than 2 batteries, etc., depending on weight carriage limits, or shooting duration or purpose challenges (and whether a base camp is in the mix). I have ten shoulder bags, mostly gotten for different systems -- but interchangeable as to uses and sizes -- and a couple of waste mount belted bags, special quick draw belted gear pouches and camera ready connecting harnesses for bearing quick draw photography gear carriage into the determined shooting environment (and a sling bag). I started collecting these with the second to last many bag types catalogue of Lowe Pro bags, and can carry two bodies with 5 or 6 lenses, in one bag, down to one body with two or three lenses in a different size bag. This includes a body mounted zoom lens on the body, set up for subject type, a second fixed portrait range or single focal length known as sharp and colorful, WA lens, and/or a telezoom or WA zoom in the front pocket of a general smaller hiking kit shoulder bag (or as set up for quick draw vertically loaded bag). Hiking applications which need image capture reach can be configured with a long end zoom lens, a medium telephoto zoom lens, or a shorter lens with teleconverter (1.4 or 1.7X are preferred for not more than one f stop light loss).

A trip out can be planned for detail, or spur of the moment, so having two or three preconfigured bag gear kits saves time and serves well. We find nearby mountain parks with nature trails, or a part of the morning few hour drive into the ranges close by our Colorado Springs area equally inviting for our engagement.

How useful are reflective soft boxes?
Posted By climbmountainway

I feel it is a matter of utility. Soft box lights are very even in illumination, but can be hard to tear down and set up for needed coverage size considerations (except for the smallest ones designed for the intimate wedding couple to be framed, or for on location portraits). Quality umbrellas can offer quick light source multiples, softening light source shoot through, or liners of different types for reflection -- and collapse and assemble without much work. As such, they are more flexible for on location set ups. Bigger soft boxes are mounted to my power pack feed for up to 4 Norman system heads when doing in house or in studio preset and predetermined soft trend lighting according to established in house subject occupancy and fill areas (products, small performance groups, interactive human subjects carefully arranged for composition).

Portability has shifted with monolight digitally adjustable heads and extremely portable battery powered light heads. Power illumination and larger area lighting though comes from power pack lighting systems and their arrays. How much contrast or shadow suggestion for the presentation of subject depth do you need for what you shoot (vs flatter subject presentation with certainty of light coverage and depth)? What does one need for shaping and spreading the light source for a captured image presenting more than a flat affect? Another consideration is where one is placing a light on location. I've seen folks coming into a location, where a light is set up with an umbrella, and knock these over by their presence more than I like to see. So trying an orange ribbon to the stand is sometimes vital. Soft boxes never seem to be bumped as much, so end up on the floor less often than umbrellas.

Also umbrellas and soft boxes come in different sizes for different lighting purposes and illumination needs. Hope this helps.

Do you have the OS HSM APO version? My manual says it takes 1 second for the lens to achieve both OS and focus, perhaps you are shooting too soon? Try the two OS settings, one for horizontally moving subjects, the other usually for vertical or stationary subjects. Also, one cannot use both the in camera stabilization and the in lens stabilization at the same time (if you have that feature), so, when the shutter is pushed half way, then all the way, it can affect the final in lens choice of stabilization and related focus accordingly..

Yes, the Pentax came long after the cameras I cited, using the MZ-S body as its form factor. No, I claimed that certain digital technology was not made ready and available for Pentax. Pentax lacked the long lenses for the sports photography gear being equipped. The first Kodak digital pro bodies used Nikon and Canon carcasses. If you go back to that era and look at the ads, they were collaborating and comarketing with these logos appearing on the related bodies, electronics mostly in the space we now find the battery grips, targeted to the pros who could use such minimal MP technology for quicker publication of imagery. So these releases, which cost tens of thousands of dollars, where so targeted and named.

Further, they had to get all those exciting video discussion generations standing by while running in place together in their Cook's Parlor to unfreeze the molasses. Otherwise, we would have to wait until next summer when the molasses flows without such informative videos slow motion tracking on toward undeclared marketing. Oh, and while concentrating on the new viewfinder ergonomics, someone forgot that a mirror needed putting back in because the flagship is not to be a mirrorless of the mirrorless Age.

Gary H Perth says, " I have a K-m that I bought over ten years ago, and I love it because of the CCD sensor. This sensor has visible grain at any ISO above about 400, and you cannot avoid the grain with a better lens, but the colours are amazing. I use it mostly with primes to keep the shutter speed in reasonable range, but short zooms do quite well. I have a F35-70mm zoom...."

A reasonable advocacy based on your expeience, but do the format conversion math, and realise that a 35mm focal length is not a wide angle lens for the APS-C format. If going to a two lens solution to the old lens, read my posts to see why DA optics to achieve a limited zoom range, which includes a true to sensor format wide angle option is called for -- yet without the optical distortion and abberation challenges which limit your old lens imaging in format capabilities.

To understand the Pentax lack of comparative Camera Systems marketing is to understand Pentax history's lapse of camera stores carrying in house Pentax full systems after losing market share around 2005. This was when digital futures had past gone from Kodak Patents on such imaging systems technology to Nikon, Canon and Olympus systems, and not to Pentax. The last of the AF film camera bodies, used for the development of a first not released Pentax DSLR, faced CCD sensor heat and drop out problems (which delayed future DSLR development and had not competed on FPS when the other film camera manufacturers, and the older LX, had for the time, full body and motor drive professional systems accessories). The sensor selected for DSLR development was used in Contax cameras, some of which experienced internal body fires. This was unfortunate for Pentax.

Further, the Pentax USA franchise suffered from internal hegemony and lack of shifting to a different distribution model, as camera store chains died, after first going to store brand lens lines to remain competitive and relevant to a general purchaser market model (not a specialists or Professional market model retained by Canon and Nikon's more modern telephoto full system longer lenses). Due to uncertainty in the financial marketplace, where shopping centers were going under and were usurped by big box stores, and mail order price cutting with on line sales (in the time leading up to the financial crisis of 2007-09) Pentax became left out of professionals consideration. Sports magazine photographers went total Canikon, because of the long lenses and DSLR focus and burst rates in their systems, and this separated Pentax from being perceived as a Professional system. Certainly Pentax imaging quality never suffered what its marketing anchors suffered: most marketing anchor lines were cut by these series of real events. There was a season of great uncertainty for camera manufacturing futures, which could be the case in present season if the COVID camera sales slump continues.

Marketing used to mean full page nifty display ads in Photography Magazines, about which recently, even Outdoor Photographer had to put out a reduced in quality month or two during the present Pandemic. There were at one time 7 major Photography subscription magazines on the magazine racks, and themed photography special editions. Today, we are pressed to find two or three. So, where to advertise? It seems more and more it is the various on line reviewers which heighten expectations and marketing, and the You Tube reviews which will make or break a camera sales futures. If Pentax does not account for the inclusion of 10 bit codable Video, with outboard breakout capacity for audio, lighting, etc. in their new cameras, future marketing will be in doubt (as to industry trends, futures, and user expectations). SO, rather than comment more on the current Pentax marketing void, WHAT CAN WE SAY AS TO WHAT TO DO TO MARKET THE PENTAX QUALITY LINE UP???

After the LX and the A series Cameras new autofocus SLR Pentax did not address the complete system competition and features of those past awarded the use of Kodak digital systems technology. The old Pentax USA lasted till 2005, and was taken over by a Corporate profile, with assumptions of a skyscraper presence carriage found in New York and in Denver for part of a difficult marketing decade. Walk in distributor over the counter factory technician repairs and user interface for maintaining the system's reputation went away when Pentax finally moved out of downtown Denver, for a very brief return to Golden, Colorado, then shape shifted out of the mile high fantastic available light State. After some quality film point and shoot camera offers, Pentax tried and stayed behind other manufacturers digital point and shoots development, though such are now catagorized as 'mirrorless cameras'. The mobile cell phone has taken over the general population photography tool kit.

HOW SHOULD PENTAX NOW MARKET ITS QUALITY IMAGING PRODUCTS, which seems to be through very large on line vendors these days. Adorama, Beach, and B and H are the available on line magazines and catalogues for available gear from Pentax in the USA. MY SUGGESTION would be that it develop graphically and technically sophisticated videos from and for its own You Tube and other video products features, use, and discussion shorts channels. The internet is the biggest library and marketing tool in the present world marketplace. It has taken up the magazine purposes, the catalogue purposes, and the 1:1 salesmanship customer functions for display of cameras and lenses most nifty products. Pentax needs an indexed Pentax channel.
