Nebulae in the Milky Way

I have been experimenting with the lost art of film astrophotography using my old Pentax SP1000 film camera and Takumar lenses. This photo was taken using a equatorial tracking mount with an exposure of 15 minutes (bulb mode). The film used was standard Kodak Elite Chrome 100 ASA, although it was out of date by a few years (2005 I think). This particular film is particularly good for long exposures and brings out the colours of the Lagoon and Triffid nebulae quite nicely. They appear as pinky-red blobs in the lower middle, just above the blurred trees. The large black and orange thing obstructing the right hand side of the view is my telescope; a camera's viewfinder is useless in the pitch black of night, so I did not check to see what would be in the field of view.
The location was Burrough Hill in Leicestershire, where light pollution is not too bad and the Milky Way can be seen with the naked eye. This particular shot shows the constellations of Aquila, Scutum and Sagittarius, all of which cover the Milky Way.
Sadly the JPEG format does not do justice to the original TIFF image scanned from the photographic slide.

Hi.

Indeed we have some nice scenery, but I like Scotland better. I also came to Leicester to attend the University and liked the place enough to stick around. It's a shame there is so much light pollution though, astro-photography requires a nice dark location.

LBA indeed. I recently bought a Helios 44m-4 (which I really like), and a Jupiter 11A (hopefully in the post as we speak).

There is a similar affliction amongst electric guitarists, GAS which stands for Gear Acquisition Syndrome. This is also an expensive condition to be in.

LBA?
Do the L and A stand for Lens and Aquisition? Not come across this one before.

Glad to be part of what looks like a great forum - lots of useful opinions and information regarding Pentax equipment.

I am new to Pentax and to SLR photography, so still learning the craft. I am interested in astro-photography mainly and recently picked up an old Helios 44 in a charity shop (Bargain!). Since the first few pictures taken on my Canon 550D I am very pleased with the image quality these old M42 lenses can produce compared to the much more expensive Canon lenses. Its like a gold mine waiting to be explored - very exciting.

Steve.
