I love the OGPS-1 unit and my biggest frustration is the lack of clear nights to use it. Here's a shot of Orion using the K5, OGPS-1, Rokinon 85mm f1.4 lens, ISO 400, f2.8 and 60 seconds exposure.

Early in the morning crossing over Johnstone Strait heading to Telegraph Cove. The smoke from massive wildfires in north eastern BC and Alberta has made it's way to the coast and filtered our view on this calm morning.

We generally don't get a lot of snow on the coast, but this year it came in abundance. A definite winter wonderland for a couple of days.

The small island in the centre of the shot is Stubbs Island, which sits at the confluence of the Weynton Passage, Cormorant Channel, Queen Charlotte Strait and Blackfish Sound, located off the NE Coast of Vancouver island.

I love the way the light and mist combines to produce subtle layering of the islands and mountains.

Yesterday was the Summer Solstice, marking the beginning of summer and hopefully a little sunshine here in the Pacific Northwest. The day was wet and a little cool, and after the rains eased up a thick fog formed along the coast line of Malcolm Island, BC.

The first photo shows Cormorant Island (and the village of Alert Bay) beginning to emerge from the fog.
The second photo shows a view of the fog along the south shore of Malcolm Island.

Nature Return of the sea otters

This is the first time I have seen this many sea otters in this location and it is a delightful sign of the recovery of this once almost extinct animal. This was out on the water between Sointula and Port McNeill in the Broughton Strait, on NE Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. Sea otters spend almost their entire lifetimes at sea and rarely venture onto land, unlike river otters.

One raft of them had at least 50 (shown in the second photo) and others were in smaller groups or just hanging around like the two in the first show. Amazing to see

Landscape Lenticular clouds over Northern Vancouver Island

I've seen lenticular clouds at this location a couple of times over the last 12 years and they always appear with strong winds and an oncoming storm system coming off the Pacific Ocean. I always find them fascinating, as they will change slowly over time, but are basically standing waves that maintain the same basic structure for hours, with small details changing and evolving throughout the day.

Pentax K-70 Giveaway The view on the wild side of the island.

After what seems like weeks of rain and wind we got a brief respite yesterday afternoon. I took the opportunity to get out to the north shore of Malcolm island and take a few photos with my trusty K-5.

I switched from Canon to Pentax a decade ago, and purchased a K-5 and a couple of lenses from members here on the forums. The shutter count when I bought the camera was less than 5000 and it now sits at over 80,000, so it has seen a lot of use over the last decade. I did purchase a second used K-5 4-5 years ago and it has seen a similar amount of use over its lifetime.

I would benefit from having a K-70 by moving to a more modern sensor, with improved image quality and I would really benefit from the articulated rear screen, as I do a lot of macro photography and I am forever having to lie in the dirt and mud to get the shot I want from a low angle with the K-5. Of course if I win the lottery I will probably pick up a K1, but that isn't all that likely :)

Macro A bird's nest fungi, the close up view!

A close up look inside an open Bird's Nest fungi. The 'nest' is about 10 mm across and the individual little eggs less than 1 mm. There is also an 'egg' on the rim of the nest on the lower left side. The eggs are actually packets of fungal spores that are dispersed by raindrops to the surrounding area. Found on Malcolm Island, BC, Canada.

It rained last night and most of the morning. It was a fairly miserable start to the day. Then around midday, the rain eased up and a few rays of sunshine appeared. Even a few patches of blue sky. It was almost as if someone flicked a switch and set the day on a different course. Tonight I wandered outside and saw that the moon was half full, or maybe half empty, and was hanging low in the sky.

This humpback whale surprised us by surfacing not far from our boat and the whales blow generated a brief but stunning rainbow with the bright sunshine illuminating the scene. Complete luck. But I am happy to have got the shot!

Macro Bird's nest fungi

A little cluster of one of the more unusual fungi to be found on Malcolm Island. These are Bird's Nest fungi, likely a species of Nidula, which means 'small nest.' You can see the 'eggs" in the two open fungi cups on the lower left of the photo. The eggs are actually small packets of spores, which are ejected from the nest and dispersed by drops of rain! This is actually a stack of 5 images to maximize the in-focus area performed in Helicon Focus.
