pentax K-5 issues :(

I bought a K5 around 2012, and I had a similar issue w a sigma 70-200 lens. I know I was in auto mode bc I was trying to photograph my children playing. I didn’t trust myself w important shots in manual focus. Important shots to me were/and are capturing moments as I see/experienced them; I want my kids to be able to see themselves as I see/saw them.

Can I tell you how stupid I felt spending that much money on a lens, feeling for a second I had clue w that big honker of a lens, then fiddling and missing shots so special to me!? I read then, a few of those lenses had a problem. So, I thought I had bought a lemon.
I didn’t venture into much beyond stills after that.

Eventually I stopped shooting altogether, but that has little to do w equipment.
Recently, my father passed away, and the quest for photos for the service ensued. I think you can see how it’s all circled back.

I am going to investigate the setting someone mentioned about a back button setting; and reset to default settings. I’ll let you know how it goes!
I’m taking my daughter hiking next weekend and I might have to give the mammoth lens another go.

Learn as you go, there really isn’t a wrong way to learn anything, and shoot your passion. I was taking photos of pea gravel today. It’s not my passion but it’s how I learn different settings. How different does this make it? Reminds me of going to the eye doctor 🤣

And lastly- my hands shake as well. Sometimes muuuch more than others. You’d never know it w the K5- probably all Pentax but I’ve only had a Pentax film SLR and this one so I cannot say for sure. That is reason enough to use the camera even though it is plenty more capable.

Thank you for posting as hopefully it’s helped my issue as well.

Enjoy your K5!

I just bought a MBP.

I hope I can figure it out. I was just out of time trying to research the different PCs, and I needed Windows 7 + video editing + dictation. It had those capabilities.

I got an excellent deal that rivals a PC all day, so I am gonna give the Mac world go.

Good luck to OP!

Oh and when I went to test drive one- there were plenty in service that made me flinch.

It just seems like the lines are so blurred these days, in what is prosumer, and what is professional, and what is trying hard to look like a Mac, but is still the same ole bloatware crap pot that cost 2K but lasts the same length of time. Then there are real workhorses out there, and I am able to identify those by, "out of my budget $3-4k." Is that really what one has to spend to get out of the prosumer market, and to be certain they have bought a good strong PC suitable for a business (ie reliable for whatever specific task it is bought for- my case video editing).

I have been scouring over reviews, and benchmarks, and Mac vs PC threads for weeks. I am still lost as a goose :)

It is like in a effort to sell these prosumer PCs, they disguise them as business PC's and then you dig and find out the opposite.

I just wish it were clear somehow! It is so much money when you look at if from a work aspect- money in, money lost with time deciding and troubleshooting a faulty product, etc.

I am in the same boat, and actually came over to see what the Pentaxians thought of the Mac world. I love my Win 7, could care less if Win8 and 10 went to way side.
But I have the task of editing hours and hours and hours of mind numbing "action" camera footage. Which is a whole lot of nothing for 5 minutes of action.
The system I have is super slow, so I am trying to figure out what on earth to do to speed it up.
I hate shopping for anything especially something so expensive over the internet, and something like this that may really be better- but I have no idea.

Yea, anyone with insight here- feel free to jump right on in!

Mercy, I fixed the post.
It's been a day!!

I took the K5 but the battery wouldn't hold a charge.
I didn't want to try the Fuji without being familiar with it- but had to use it on the fly.
It worked well, except I still don't know how to review the video in camera- but that will come.

Thanks for the help- I was kind of desperate today.

This has been such a nightmare.
I took the K5 with me to a clinical situation to film for a post-grad type project and it would not hold a charge.
I put the k5 on the charger and used it intermittently as I charged the battery.
Edit: I grabbed the Fuji as a last resort although I was not familiar with the video function- at all.
I could not figure out how to review video in camera. The print manual doesn't say, and I was not in a situation that I could take the time to dig online.
So I did the best I could.
The video I have is skipping and splotchy. I used an extreme 60 sec card.

Is there anyway to fix this? What in the world?

---------- Post added 11-04-14 at 08:35 PM ----------

Whew! I converted it to a windows file. Life is better.

Hey I have a question. Does this have to be specifically a SD *HC* card? I have a SD XC and my understanding was that it was just an extended capacity from the SD HC. But when I power on with menu it says, cannot use this card.
Now it is a SD mini in an adapter...So I need to know which to go buy. We use the mini's around here much more than the standard cards...
Thanks!

Yea, I'm not one to mull on things although I should, certainly. I hate things being on my plate. I have second guessed bc of the price vs the x20 and the lens control error. Additionally, the Sony RX 100 lii is a very nice competitor. I stopped looking at it for two reasons- zoom is to eq of 70mm vs 114, and it is quite small. I would imagine for many like myself with arthritis that lack grip strength it would be dropped or at least nearly dropped frequently. I don't like the thought of dropping $800 bucks.

We leave in one month for a two month trip to the Everglades... I gotta get ready.

Now did Fuji really send you that? That is insane! Actual skill (that you possess) means quite nil in your obvious ability to sell a product. They should consider if you chose to promote Sony...
That really is aggravating!!

They should pay you, ya know.

I am keeping my Pentax film and any lenses that work with it. And that is the main reason for going with an X camera.

That autofocus issue is a killer for me right now. I can't deal with that frustration again after the K5...but dang that's a great deal on the X10.

Whatcha think buy it and try it then offer it up for sale here for the same price or pass and x20?

These are the decisions in life that are so important!

Thank you for replying, I had hoped you would!! I did not see the bear, I think my children may be the equivalent at times :)

I was told my husband bought me a camera for a birthday gift but he swears he did not, only considered it. The good news there is that I choose but with his blessing. Always nice!

The AF issue, is it only in dim light or is this an issue most all the time?

I see a used X10 now with extra battery and case for $300 shipped. However, I have dealt with AF hunting with the K5 and it is terribly annoying.

ETA: it actually comes with "leather case, adapter, hood, box, and all accessories. Also has extra battery."

After loving learning some photography w my K5 and assortment of lenses- I am moving on (back someone say). Basically I love capturing those wonderful images, but my hands are always full and so is my schedule. It isn't a priority to practice this craft- children and their school and mine take that cake.

But I still love love it. But having a DSLR around is not compatible with our lifestyle right now.

At any rate I am looking for a simple effective set up. I really desire a view finder and had my heart set on an X20 but now they are discontinued.
I do not want interchangeable lens. Wifi is bonus, zoom is bonus, pocketable is must have, and the more Mom friendly (aka shock etc proof) the better.
Kids don't stand still so action is a must- AND the increased chance of capturing those childhood moments artfully is really the goal of any camera for me.

Thank you to anyone for any input here. I look and I get so overwhelmed at all of the choices.

Nevermind!!!
Just got a text from someone who saw this- hubby bought me one for my birthday!
Trying to pry which one out of the source!!

I am learning here. And just doing test shots, when I try to upload them to dropbox, the file size is too large. This is a 7 minute video and on two stars quality and nonHD 25.
What else am I missing here?
Is it just too long?
I need to do podcast for the husband. Mostly reviews of products. We have a GoPro....I am wondering if that would be better to try for this.
Any and all thoughts appreciated!!
