Recommendation wanted on 1st lens for K-5IIs

I finally have the money put together to get a new camera. I was tempted by the new Nikon D7100 with 16-85 mm lens, but ultimately decided the Pentax K-5IIs was a better fit for me. What would you recommend for a high quality lens for general use? I am looking for something similar to the 16-85mm Nikon lens, but could perhaps buy two different Pentax lenses to cover the range if the performance was better that way.

My "eventually" is over the next two years. As my primary interest is landscapes, I thought starting off with a good wide angle zoom made sense. I also wanted something close to what the human eye would capture, and thought something in the 35-43 mm range would work. I will try to get the FA 43mm Limited lens instead of the 40mm. Next, I will add the DA* 55mm lens. I have considered the FA 77mm Limited, and it is still an option. If I go that route, I won't get a 70-200 mm lens; instead I would get a good dedicated 200 mm lens.

My impression from what I have researched and read here is that the best Pentax lenses tend to be primes. I was trying to cut down on overall lens count by getting the 70-200mm telephoto zoom lens, but that might not be the best idea. I will need to think on that.

As for the K-5 II versus K-5 IIs, I AM interested in the IIs version. If it is like the Nikon D800E, it SHOULD be a bit sharper. Hopoefully, there will be a good comparison test out before December.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback so far.

Kendra

I know the 70-200 mm lens is big and heavy. Are there any other good options for this range of lens that are lighter, or is this the best bet?

Proposed Starter System based on K-5 II

Hello,

I have decided to outfit myself with a new camera system for Christmas. I currently have an Olympus E-510, but am unhappy with Olympus's support for their 4/3rds DSLR's. I am sticking with a ASP-C sensor, because I want to keep overall weight down, and don't feel the need for a full frame camera. I want to purchase lenses that are known for producing high quality images.

My proposed system to start is as follows:

Pentax K-5 II Camera Body
Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM Lens
Pentax DA 40mm F2.8 Limited Lens
Pentax AF540FGZ Flash

I eventually plan to add these lenses:

Pentax DA* 55mm F1.4 SDM Lens
Pentax D FA Macro 100mm F2.8 WR Lens
Sigma 70-200mm ƒ/2.8 EX DG HSM APO Lens

I am new to Pentax lenses, so would like a critique about lens choices, and possible overlooked options. I do a fair bit of nature and landscape photography at a hobby level. I am also interested in doing a bit of portrait photography, but this is secondary to my main interests.

I mispoke about the first Pentax camera I used. It was a K1000, and not a CANON AE-1. The Canon was used later on. The fog of getting old overtook my memory for a minute.

It sounds like the new K-5 IIs is the best bet for me. I am also wanting to get the best ISO performance possible for low light situations and I also do landscape photography. The question for me now is: "When will these cameras become available in Canada?"

I just joined this forum, and am looking forward to learning about all things Pentax. My first camera was a Pentax AE-1, which I learned basic photography skill back in the 1970's. I recently re-entered the photography world with an Olympus E-510 DSLR and 14-42/70-300 mm Olympus lenses. The price was right to get started in the digital SLR world, but it soon became clear to me that Olympus is lagging behind in terms of sensor development and ISO performance.

I thought about getting a new Olympus E-5 for Christmas, but research has made me commit to a Pentax K-5 instead. The future of 4/3rd cameras and lenses is a bit too iffy for me. Now, I don't know whether my purchase will be an original K-5 as released in 2010, or the new K-5 II, but it will be one of these cameras for sure. Both cameras sound quite similar, and there is a great deal on the original K-5 through a regional supplier. Hopefully, I can learn the pro's and con's of this issue online here.

I can say that I am enjoying working with a DSLR quite a bit. The savings on not having to buy film will quickly add up. I guess going digital makes a lot of sense, particularly as 35 mm film is getting phased out by many film manufacturers.

Thanks for listening to me. I hope to have a lot of fun here.
