Decidedly not the most used nor the most in-demand 6X7 lens, these are typically pretty inexpensive. They work well for some uses, being approximately equivalent to a 100mm lens in 24X36 terms.

Unfortunately, right now, I only have the one photo worth sharing. And, honestly, the lens can perform better than this.

I had a chance to photograph some colleagues at a work event last night. Light (for all but the last shot) was bounce flash off the ceiling. Post work was fairly minimal, some contrast reduction and dodging out shadows around a couple of peoples' eyes. Here are some of the shots with which I'm happy.

He wanted a rougher-looking, grittier photo. We also did a more lighthearted photo, but I like how this one turned out.

These were some of the best, but all around, a generally decent evening.

Tilt-shift-swing Macro bellows from OTS parts

So I made a tilt-shift-swing macro bellows over the weekend with commercially available over the shelf (COTS) components. The nice thing about it being COTS is that it's replaceable or upgradeable to add more movements. Because 2.5" of movements may not be enough...)

Anyway, in addition to being for macros, I built it to do pictorial photography and focal-place-control portraits with simple lenses. I gave it a shot today with a plano-convex lens that creates some pretty glowy images. To control that, I threw on a microscope aperture that stops down to 1mm, which allowed me to get the lens pretty sharp, but there was too much of a breeze for any of the sharp photos not to have motion blur. Anyway, there's something about a single piece of uncoated glass that conveys some amazing color.

Here are photos of the rig and some of the pictorial photo samples I took today.

Yes, that is a lens made of step-up and step-down rings mis-fitted onto an M42 aperture and that M42 aperture is on a PK adapter. Yeah, that actually does work pretty well.

Looking through the lens (the glass is in front of the aperture) at the aperture. It would be possible to mount some lenses behind the aperture, but I digress.

I thought that the tubular bellows would vignette badly and limit movement, but the movements have to be FAR more extreme than in useful for the lenses I've tested (the single-element 100mm lens and the Pentax-D FA 100mm macro) to vignette. On APS-C, this would likely not vignette at all with most lenses.

Here you can see the image vignetting. That's at about 90% of the movement capacity on the front standard.

https://photos.smugmug.com/T-S-S-Macro-Bellows/i-KZB77gZ/0/05af8eb1/L/T-S-S%...%2816%29-L.jpg
Top view of the above shot. This is far more movement than is healthy for anythign except an advanced yogi.

Side view of the above two shots.

Super-glowy single-element lens pictorial photo, no movement, wide open.

Same shot with some tilt and swing applied.

Swung way out to the edge of the image circle with some bellows vignetting.

Stopped down a bit and shifted to maximum camera movement.

Tilted and shifted to capture the very edge of the image circle. At this magnification, the lens covers an area about the size of an LF negative.

If there's interest, I'll post a parts list. All in, this cost around $220 and the parts came from three sources -- Servo City and two eBay sellers. The bellows needed a slight mod so that the 6-32 screws could fit through it (the holes in the bellows were sized for 4-32 screws.) So after drilling the mounting holes out to 7/16 (I think), the screws fit well. The base COULD be made smaller but I over-sized the width for stability and weight to counter balance the K-1's weight. I wouldn't suggest going much narrower. Also, focus is a bit odd since the tripod mount is on the front standard, but I got used to it in a couple of re-focuses. The only technical limitation with this design is that the camera is mounted in portrait orientation. To rectify that, the bellows would need a second tripod mount where the affixing screw is right now. In my mind, portrait orientation isn't the end of the world as the means to achieve portrait orientation with this design would be exceedingly cumbersome.

Thank you! I found it in there. I didn't even realize instructions came alongside FW updates. The issue was the drive mode. Because I was in continuous, it was unavailable. ES is only available with single shot.

Only as a negative. I like it a lot, but having found a tonal solution for CMS 20, prefer it. Silvermax does have great results. Her's a recent Silvermax shot that I'm happy with:

Sensorex II, Soligor 50mm 1.4, Silvermax 100 @100, L110 1+31 7:00

Silvermax is a slightly higher grain than I typically like with a 100 ISO film, but the image character is fantastic.

Thank you!

I just finished editing about 85 rolls of film from the last year. I was happy with some of the shots. Here they are with camera, lens, film, and development data.

Pentax LX, Vivitar RL Edition 28mm 2.8 in PKA, Tri-X 400 @400, D-76 1+1 9:30

Pentax LX, SMC-M 28mm f/2.8 (RIP), Adox CMS II 20 @20, D-76 1+3 10:30
If anyone has read all the APUG and similar forum threads denouncing D-76 for Adox 20 ISO film as 'just giving snow and ashes', I've been using this dilution and time a lot and it's working very well at delivering gray tones that hold their own against many other films. Here are a couple more from that same shoot with the same lens and film.

Pentax LX, 50mm f/1.4 (probably, maybe the 31mm 1.8), Rollei Retro 80S @80, RPX-D 1+19 8:00

Minolta Alpha 9, Sigma 70-300, Kodak 5222 Double-X @250, L110 1+31 6:00

Minolta X-700, Vivitar 24mm f/2, Kodak TMax 400 @400, Rodinal 1+25 6:00

Takumar 67 35mm 1:3.5 Fisheye

I took my first roll with the fisheye today and was both surprised at how well it performed and how much more skill I really need to use it well. I read reviews that said this lens was soft (it is, at the corners, and expecting it not to be is silly) and a lot of people seem to dislike it. I think this has a more limited range than many lenses and needs to be used for special purposes not as a general lens. Right now, I think it's probably in the 8 range on a 1-10 scale, but I need to test it with about 100 more photos before I feel like I can write a competent review.

Here, however, are some early pics as samples.

I had to punch up the contrast because I scanned a print. HP5+ shot at 400 ISO.

So, yes, it warps the world a lot.

But as a portrait lens, this is actually a pretty good option for creative portraiture.

Up close, even at f11 the DoF is really limited, so don't expect this lens will be great for grand vistas and deep-field shots.

Portraits would be best served if the lens is not higher than the person, unless the goal is to make them look small with a huge head and super-tiny feet.

At four feet, there's some substantial distortion.

I had a chance to photograph a dog in foster for one of the local Denver-based rescues, All Points West. As I tend to do with dog shoots, I used the 77mm FA Limited almost exclusively. These were all taken on the K-3.

I'm always amazed at how well it captures fur, the blood vessels in the ears, eye detail, and so forth.

Definitely. I keep about 10% of the bird shots I take on a good day. Typically with shows like Axel running, I would set to manual, set my focus point, set up a shot with him running toward the camera, burst shoot starting before he arrived at the focus point, and then do that five or six times to get one or two good shots. But, I don't want people to think that because I could use AF with this lens to get some good action shots that's a panacea for all the challenges in action photography.

Ditto the above note.

This is what the image warping looks like. Despite posting three images with thsi of star trails, i STRONGLY recommend against using this as a star trails lens -- it's simply not fast enough.

Here are some on a film body to capture the whole fish-eye effect:

Yeah... That's my finger in the lower right. That happens on about 40% of the photos I take with this lens.

I won't drop all 55 photos that I really liked here, just a few. If you want to see the whole album, here you go: National Western Rodeo 2019 - David Hancock

Friday I got to take in the National Western rodeo in Denver. I haven't been to a rodeo in 25 years, so this was a blast. I don't know that all the cows and horses had quite as much fun, however. We lucked into some good seats, on the first, first row, separated from the arena by only a couple metal bars. We got hit by dirt almost every time a horse ran past, some of which were inches from us.

Bareback bucking bronco rider, probably very ready to be on a different horse. He had a pretty harsh ride.

The next rider in the same event. His face says it all. FYI, these three bareback photos were taken with the Pentax D-FA* 50mm f/1.4, not the 77mm.

Australian horse freetrainer. He had four horses in the ring all doing tricks and things that he directed them to do, none with any kind of bridle or reins. I enjoyed the performance a lot. Really talented guy.

Another bareback bucking bronco rider. That looks like a hard way to make a buck.

Bull riding. That'll be a hard no from me, thank you. Those guys were amazing, to say the least.

The calf roping was pretty hard to watch, but must have taken a lot of practice to master. There were a lot of misses in the roping events. This was not one of them.

Right now, this is my favorite photo of the day.

One last photo, this guy had the gig, but he spent a good deal of time climbing the railing in front of us to get away from horses. This job would be another hard no from me.

For technique, I shot everything in full manual. 1205 ISO, f/2.2 to 2.5 (except the 50mm, which I shot wide), and at 1/1,000 to 1/2,50 for the shutter. That underexposed about 1.4 to 2 stops, depending on the lighting for each specific event. In post I batch edited the image and raised the exposure to the correct levels. No noise reduction, only some sharpening in raw and a minor touch after with an unsharp mask. Other editing included some cropping for horizon lines and stitching two photos from an immediate sequence together a couple times. So mostly the editing was minimal.
