That is not a joke anymore. This Pentax 250/3000mm is a real thing. A beauty, and a very big value. I would like to have even the smallest from that picture.

Thanks for posting this picture.

New Nikon Mirrorless

Everyone here seems to think that Pentax will be happy to be left alone, as the only one manufacturer without a competitive mirrorless camera. I think that your are wrong. Maybe I am wrong, but I think that Pentax is already working in that field. And the fact that they didn't realise no new DSLR in the last period is a sign. And those statements made by Pentax representatives reminds me about other statements, about FF camera, before the release of K1. More, even this discution is similar with those about the necessity, or not, of a FF camera in Pentax line, in that time.

And, most probably, I will receive a lot of flak now, as I did then, when I said, ''FF or dead''.

Yes, I have already said it. I'm a bad photographer. I don't have the skills. My bad skill makes the same camera noisyer as the time passed by.

At least, I know when to stop. Stop taking picture with a camera, stop making asumptions about someone else, ...

This camera could be a good news for everyone, regardless of the brand used, because it could wake up some sleepy - and some times stingy - managers, especially from Canon, Nikon, and others.

@ lesmore49 and Rondec. I am glad that your are happy with your cameras. But if you want to convince me that Pentax is better than Canon, I will tell you that I came from Canon to Pentax. I have spend about 4 years in the Pentax land, and I lost more than 2000$ when I was convinced that it's not for me and sold all my Pentax tools. And I didn't do it for nothing, or for several bad shots. No. Maybe I am a bad photographer with Pentax cameras, and not so much with Canon.

I don't remember where, but some time ago I have posted here a very ilustrative picture at ISO 250. It was the same kind of discution, and after I have posted all comentaries has suddenly stopped. Now, I can't do this again, because I don't have time to look for in tens of thousands of old images, and because I am no longer a site suporter, I had to erase a lot of attachments to post a new one, so I erased all.

If you don't beleve me, it's not my problem.

Just be happy with the camera you choose.

Pentax autofocus compared to others?

When we compare the speed and precision of AF system from Pentax to Canon and Nikon, we must consider one big structural difference. In lens stabilization versus on sensor stabilization. In lens stabilization send a stabilized image not only to the imaging sensor, but prior to that, to the AF sensor. So, the phase detect AF can work much easy, because they have a stable signal to judge. Pentax, doesn't have this benefit. The image received by the AF sensor is always a little or more shaky. So, If we keep this in mind, Pentax AF speed is very good. Also, this structural difference affects the precision of the focusing.

I had a number of different Pentax cameras, and now I use a Canon 60D, and AF precision is no longer a problem, as it was sometimes with Pentax, as long I use a Canon stabilized lens. But for very low light, is nowhere near the performance of K-5 IIs, a camera which is capable to focus where I could not see with my own eyes. And I presume that more recent Pentax models are better.

An Open Letter to Pentax: K-1 Infinity Focus Problems
Posted By JimmyDranox

First, any astro-photographer with a little experience will never use AF for astro images, so, I don't think that the author of this post is using AF.

Second. in my astro-photo trials with Pentax cameras, I have meet with this problem in some of the cameras. More, on a K-5IIs, the bayonet on the camera was not only too far in the front, making focusing on the star impossible, but also was tilted. Not much, to be seen on a day time picture, but enough to give different images of stars on one side from the other. And the tests I have made was done with 2 lenses, which was working perfect at stars with my previous K-5. It took me some hours of screwing and unscrewing - in very small increments - the screws that holds the bayonet mount, to fix the problem. But I can do it, thanks to the seal ring, which stand under the the mount ring.

Third. Yes, some lenses are a little longer in the back, and cannot focus properly at infinity. I have met this case to, with a Tamron 70-300 mm. It was fixed on the service.

My conclusion is that this problem can appear, but can be fixed.

24mp full frame K mount camera, possible?

In both cases the solution is a lower resolution sensor:).

And also, for a video K-FF, a lower resolution will be recommended.

In the past I was sure that an FF Pentax will come, even when a lot of people said contrary. This time, I could not say that a 24 Mp FF will be made, but for Pentax sake, I hope. And not latter than 12 month.

First, the hard work is already done. Second, a lower resolution FF camera will be on the trend with all others major manufacturers, and a big help for some customers to decide for a step to FF. Will also be a sign of Pentax determination to be in the first line, with Canon, Nikon, and Sony.

Completely divorced from reality?

First of all, every person has his own expectations about a camera. And I can give you at least one example. In his review of K-1, Adam points as a negative ''low Jpeg quality''. Immediately, an angry member has responded that the quality of Jpeg is very good. So, there is no valid or invalid point of view, only personal perceptions. And this is only one example. If I would have time for this, I could number tens of angry reactions from Pentax members to divers reviews published here and there about K-1.

You are asking why. It is better, IMO, to have a lot of reviews, even not totally positive for Pentax, than to be ignored by most of reviewers, like was the situation some time ago. And to be angry about someone review, to respond by attacking the autor is counter productive. Now, I don't remember who, but someone has posted his reservation about publishing a review because of Pentax supporters reactions.

But I think that I have explained my position about this very well in previous two posts here. More, to say that you or anybody disagree with one review is one thing, To begin to say that a reviewer is ''so and so'', because he didn't pay enough attention to a camera, or he has expressed some negative points, is a totally different thing.

I saw this happening to Ed, from Photouniverse in the past, to Tony Northrup,, and Kay, and these are the only ones I can remember now. Do we really need enemies?

I remember the time when everybody here was complaining about the huge delay of DPR review for K-3, even that nobody expects to be a glorious one. I remember the time when many (most) reviewers has no interest in Pentax cameras or lenses..

And I have a question for everyone. It was better?

In my opinion, we must be glad that a lot of reviewers are paying attention to K-1, even that not all of them are praising everything about this camera.

A very interesting usage for this tiny camera was made by a group of students, called Earth to Sky Calculus. They have launched this camera with a stratospheric balloon, up to 115,000 feet - 35 000 meters, above California's Sierra Nevada, capturing fantastic images. I must mention that the camera withstand temperatures of - 65 degrees Celsius, and a thermal pack was used to keep the batteries warm.

A picture before the launch:

A ''low'' altitude image. The baloon and the Sun can be seen:

A high altitude one:

Neck strap or hand strap? Both

Usually I don't like the neck strap, for various reasons. I prefer the hand strap. But, some times, the neck strap can be usefull. The problem is that ataching and detaching a strap is a time consuming work.

So, when I bought a K-5, I quickly made a strap holder, to work with hand strap all the time, and with neck strap, only when I need it. And also, to be able to put my camera on a table without a problem.

Of course, it is not perfect, nor in conception, neither in handcraft - I did in a hurry. Most certainly, in the future, I will make a much better design, for which I already have some new ideas. Including a model for my K-r.

This is my second DiY project in photography (in astronomy I had several). I hope that in a near future to be able to present you my first project, which reached the 10'th prototype, and I'm still not satisfied with it.

I forgot to mention that I did this by textolite, which is a fairly easy and durable material. As you can see, there are some signs of use, after three month of wear.

Game changer - Pentax lenses

For long focal lens, sometime the SR is not the best solution. Think that you want to shot a bird or a plane in flight, and you can't use a tripod, and your hands are shaking because of the weight of the system, and the position. And if your target is small, you will clearly see how it's ''dancing'' in the viewfinder. This movement can confuse both the focusing, and the exposure. That is why, the OS system is better for long lenses than SR, because the image transmitted by the lens is already steady, in the viewfinder, and also on the focusing and exposure sensors.

Seems that Canon is feeling the Bern. Ups, sorry, feeling the K. They will announce three ''major'' news today.

Some very clever new features on this K-1 camera. Illuminated mount, back panel and card slot, PS, and most in my regards, the controls, with all those wheels. I think that this system of controls has a big chance to be followed by other manufacturers.

A big day for Pentax and Pentaxians.
