K-5 Manual video mode workaround

Hello there,

let me first apologize if someone did mention this before here. I did the searching and found nothing, so I thought myself that this would be a nice thing to share. It is about "secret" manual video mode in K-5. I did not know this till today and - it seems to be pretty awesome. The tutorial is not mine, but let me explain it to you in my words.

So in default K-5 video mode you can control your aperture and exposure compensation (WB and other stuff) - and that's it - compared to other cameras like Canons and Nikons this pretty much sucks isn't it?! But there is a workaround how to control the ISO and the shutter speed as well. This might be handy when shooting e.g. on green background and you want to avoid motion blur caused by fast movements.

Here are the simple steps:
  1. You have to use one of the USER modes - set it to Av and tweak your exposure settings.

  2. When done - press the AE-L button - this will lock your exposure settings.

  3. Keep it locked and then just switch to the video mode - the exposure settings will remain locked.

  4. Start shooting and enjoy your manual settings :)

Limits: ISO must me 3200 at maximum and shutter speed must be at least 1/25 or 1/30 depending on the video format you chose.

Happy shooting and for those who did know that - don't call me captain obvious, I was pretty happy when found this.

Cheers.

K5 top display problem

Well, I have the same problem. When shooting outdoors and there is like 10 degrees or less, some of those block simply disappear, but pushing on the thumb grip below solves the problem in almost every temperature, so it seems to be caused by the signal-transfer rubber underneath the lcd. My K-5 is no more under warranty but I would really love to have this fixed. Any idea how much should this cost?

Hi, I would like to thank you all guys who did vote for any of those designs. I really appreciate your votes and I am super happy I received most of them. I would like to congratulate to other designs on 2nd and 3rd place because they were definitely very good competitors (and not only them). And I give my big thanks to administrators SlickYamaha and Adam, who take care about all these competitions you would hardly find on any enthusiasts forum with such a prize for contest like this. So thank you so much.

Just few notes about the design: original DOF scale comes from DA 70mm/f2.4 Limited and all the DA limited lenses have very similar shape of this scale. Because I simply love my 40mm limited lens I wanted to make some sort of tribute for these amazing pieces of glass. I am glad that some of you did appreciate this and I hope you will proudly wear this t-shirt.

Thank you.

Not sure but on very top of the voting post is this: "This poll will close on 1st Apr 2013 at 10:08 PM" ... it seems to be kinda long to me and the 10:08 PM is weird as well :D

Hopefully this will help to make it clear in the first post for the next time. I would just add something like "consider your designs wisely because you can submit only x submissions" or "use only solid colors without gradients and make the graphics suitable for whatever technique will be used for printing" adding a note that will say "we will select first 100 best designs for which you can vote for later" will help as well.. I know this is a free contest but when people are competitive you would not be surprised that they are upset when something that was not mentioned in the rules happened. Well I don't complain, just try to suggest some ideas in advance.

I agree that the brief in the beginning was not clear enough. Nothing about using PENTAX logo and nothing about number of submissions was there, so this seems to be kinda unfair for you. Even if there was said that people will make the choice. I really understand, that there had to be some filter before posting all the images on the forum, but I cant really see the point of leaving some pictures with obvious issues like multiple colors, gradients and stuff and not choosing properly made vector images which are not bad at all. From my point of view and my taste, I would definitely replace the last #99 or maybe any other submissions with yours, because the quality of the graphics is just waay too better.

Well you read it like this, because you know well the words "pentax forums". But if you would ask somebody, who actually does not know this, he would have hard time to read it exactly for the first time I guess. And my another note is: it was not a competition for creating a new logo, which should be very useful indeed. So If I do create this kind of competition, I would probably be glad if the design uses actual logo even if the quality of it is not that ... perfect. IMO

I would proudly wear #34 because I love limited lenses :). Some other ideas like focusing points or mode dial seem to be kinda recycled over and over to me..

Well I see what you mean, but anyway the core of this idea is good and I agree with the "positive social consequence" but wouldn't it be more interesting if the form itself is not as boring as just lines of text? What about considering some visual hierarchy e.g. increase the important years and add some illustrations to emphasize them. You know what I mean? Like ... make it visually more attractive, which is basically the whole point of info-graphics.

Hi there, well the idea is quite good for some info-graphics or maybe video, but t-shirt is medium, which people see actually from various distances in various times and I don't really think that there would be somebody feeling comfortable reading through all these lines on another person wearing this T. It is just my opinion but I guess that the T-shirt should be well recognizable from far and when close - it should be read/understood in less than few seconds. This piece of artwork is quite complex for T-shirt I guess.

Let me just post a few things about the actual t-shirt design requirements mentioned in the first post.
It should be simple - because of printing on the t-shirt and it should contain no more than 2 colors. Well – according to this I guess that the technique used for actual printing will be screen-printing - it will allow to create loads of t-shirts with same design for relatively low cost. But as every technique, screen-printing has its drawbacks. Let's assume that the technique will be the screen-printing, it would mean, that this particular t-shirt design would not be suitable for this technique at all.
Let me explain it better: Similarly to the screen (monitor) the screen (kind of silk) used for printing has its own resolution. Depending on type of material and graphics, you can choose your resolution. But when printing on black material like cotton, the screen resolution plays very important role in the actual print. The resolution must be kinda low, because you need the paint to go trough the screen fairly easily and get quite good amount of dense paint on to the t-shirt. When the background is black, you will need even more color to put on. So it basically means, that using screen-printing on this particular design would result in disaster - those very tiny and light letters would not be recognizable at all and probably you would not be able to even create (expose and wash out) the screen. Even if you made the screen with good resolution, you would not be able to print with this on black surface... and even if you would be able to print on black surface, the amount of paint would be so thin, that all these letters and tiny graphics elements would disappear after first laundry.

Maybe I am wrong and the technique for printing is different (like UV print) but I hardly think so, because of the requirements mentioned in first post.

I just wanted to kinda explain the background in the actual process of printing because it is very important considering this when designing actual t-shirt. This is posted after the deadline anyway, so there is no problem with this design, but I saw some contributions which would fail in screen-printing as well.

Pentax ME Super auto-release problem

Wow, Mystery Onion himself, I read a lot on your blog about ME Super repairs. I read all the parts about disassembly of ME Super and have to thank you, because it was very very useful when I was changing the counter dial. I didn't want to disassembly the camera more, because it begun to be more challenging and I was not sure, if I am able to assemble all these tiny parts back. I will probably dedicate this camera to my pinhole experiments and leave it for spare parts for my working ME Super. But thank you anyway for your response. Glad to see you here at PentaxForums.

See You.

Pentax ME Super auto-release problem

Hi there,

I bought myself broken copy of ME Super because I wanted to replace my broken counter dial in my other ME Super. It was sold as broken, but it seemed to work for me very well until I attached the lens and set higher apperture. If I leave my apperture at the lowest value, it works great, but when you try some higher number, it will advance the film and cock the shutter for just one photo. Then if you want to cock it again, it autoreleases when the winding lever is at its end of rotation. I tried to somehow inspect all the levers and elements inside the mirrorbox but I didn't find any problem. Is there any way how to solve this problem, without complete dissasembling my ME Super?

Thank you for your ideas and replies.

Hi, its been a long time since my last post, but I wanted to add that I have solution for this mallfunction (advancing without cocking). I did not want to leave my shutter cocked so I tried to push the release trigger about 20 times before shooting after long time and viola, it works!

Hope, this may be helpful for somebody.

Thank you all for your posts. My ME Super has shutter lock on the dial, so you wouldnt accidentaly fire it when handling in bag. Anyway I see that opinions are different, but I will probably stay with leaving camera uncocked for longer time. It does make me sense, that there is some tension inside which may not be healthy for overall durability.

Thank you. I think, it should be okay to leave it cocked (winder leaves it cocked also and it is genuine equipment), but when I think about the mechanism inside, there must be some spring which is in tension during the cocked state to be able to fire the shutter curtains. What a dilema! :D

Hello,

I am new member of this awesome forum and one of the reasons why to register here was my question, to which I can't find any answer. I have Pentax ME Super and sometimes, when not used for few days, the shutter wont cock after the film advance. When I advance the film again, shutter will cock normaly and works fine. I quess some stucked old oil inside prevent the mechanism to cock when it stays without action for longer time. One solution, I found is to give the camera little exercise: 100–200 shot cycles. I havent tryed this solution, since my camera is loaded with film now. But maybe I have another – simpler solution: just leave the camera cocked all the time. I don't know if it is harmful for the mechanism inside, but when you have winder attached, it shots and then advances the film forward and cock the shutter, so it should not cause any harm, should it?

Thanks for any help or reply.
Jan
