okay since this thread is alive again, let me share how my K01 broke:
it started when i noticed my pictures were always overexposed. no matter which shutter speed i set, there will always be blurred movement like the picture was captured in slow shutter, almost like at 1/3 speed.
the shutter was stuck up, and open. even when i turn the camera off, shutter remained stuck. so when i capture, the sensor records the scene for 1/3 second, then expects the shutter to move at the set speed, say 1/125, to get a 1/125 speed picture. but since the shutter is stuck open, the scene is recorded at 1/3 second still.
after several tries a small black metal came off, around a third inch long strip of metal. it probably came from the shutter curtain breaking down.
now the shutter is stuck DOWN. nothing would bring it up. i tried everything i could google. nothing. i think the mechanical curtain broke down. i can pull the curtain up with a pin, without a lens.
the camera is fine except the shutter is down. it can record pictures and videos, just in black. that's why i want to find out if we can just remove the shutter curtain all the way, instead of going through the trouble of finding a replacement part. but this way the camera will only function as a video K01 - which is fine with me. id rather have a part of the camera working than nothing at all.

The camera records information - it's just that the shutter curtain couldnt go up so the screen is all black - but it records everything even audio

i have the exact same problem - everything works except the shutter wont go up after starting the camera up. The camera still records video tho so i have a crazy idea - can the camera work without the mechanical shutter as a fully dedicated video camera???

All good points here -- to give perspective, i still have my K10D and K5 working -- both more than 10 years! As i mentioned my film camera SW120ii still works great -- I think there is some design flaw in the retracting lens mechanism that shortens the ideal lifespan of the GR, not to mention the unforgiving humidity in the tropics
I dont have the budget to replace this soon -- but if ever it happens i might just get something with interchangeable lenses, like a Pentax Q or a Fuji

biz-engineer, cport - yeah the humidity sure was a big contributor, even though oftentimes i put it in a drybox - sometimes i leave it in the bag with silica gel

I got my GR when it came out in 2013. I was so happy shooting it. It was a pocket rocket. Great size, awesome sensor, nice 2.8 lens.
But there was so many mechanical problems with the retracting lens. Around 2015-16, just 3 years into using the camera, i had problems with the retracing lens. I posted about it here. To summarize, by 2018, after 2 yrs of using it with the problem, I had it repaired in Tokyo for around 180USD. The GR felt like new again.
Fast forward this morning, I turned on my GR camera and noticed autofocus was not engaging; even though I'm quite sure of my settings. Then I turned it off, behold, the lens did not retract. I am already familiar with the issues and tried some nudging on the lens to make it retract. I managed to do so but since the camera is on the lens goes back out.
After a few minutes of trying, shutting it off then on, now my GR shuts down by itself approx 5 seconds after it is turned on.
Such a waste of a great sensor and user-interface. RIP GR.
Ten years of ownership is not a long time for a camera I believe. My film camera Pentax SW120ii (from 2003?) still works great today -- I will just stick to this for now: |

With my 1st gen GR, you can turn the camera on by holding the Play button so you can view the photos "without turning the camera on" and extending the lens. Does yours turn on by doing the same?

made a rough estimate comparing the FA 31 based on the size of the mount
it's possible it has a 67mm filter size. could be a 21/2.8 or 21/2? |

Wow, cport, that almost costs a used GR on ebay.
I just hope my luck doesn't run out, I'm afraid the problem might come back in a couple of years or so. Fingers crossed and knock on wood!

A friend of mine happened to travel to Tokyo so I asked him to bring my GR to the Ricoh Service Center. Everything broken was replaced with new parts. Repair time took A SINGLE DAY. Repair cost around 180 USD.
Now my GR feels and works like new. Shutter count back to zero. Hopefully it lasts longer this time around.

The dreaded day has arrived. My GR is no longer responding. When I turn it on, the lens extends, but the shutter remains closed no matter what i do. Every shot is just a blank, black picture. I don't think I have even surpassed 10,000 clicks with this camera. So disappointing and disheartening.

I'm trying to spend more and more time with the K10D for casual/personal shots, and I'm rediscovering how amazing this old technology is.
