Try a different lens, sounds like a problem I had with a 16-85 where one of the brass contacts was broken, an easy fix.

Got myself on the NBN after using telstra wireless for years, used Aussie broadband to connect and had great success, they were piggy backing the optus network but since moving to there own we are getting 20mbps download and 4.6 mbps upload speeds which is close to what we pay for , dont have a phone so not sure about that side of things.Not bad for a country area.
