The FA31 has practically no lens distortion, as this official forum review concluded: "The amount of distortion is low for a wide angle lens, at 0.8% both with APS-C and full frame sensors. This low level of distortion will be hard to spot in most scenes, and is easy to correct. Modern cameras include an automatic distortion correction tool, and most post-processing programs will take care of it without trouble."

I'm going to make a suggestion that will probably make most people cringe... however, bear with me.
If you can find a nice used (or well-priced new) pre-PZD Tamron AF 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) (quite the mouthful, eh? :p), it's well worth a look.
I have one in Minolta AF mount that I use on my Hasselblad HV (Sony A99) from time to time, and it produces really decent results - for a super zoom. It's better than the Tamron 18-250 on APS-C in my view, presumably because the designers were able to limit the wide end to a more realistic focal length. It's not a fast lens, nor the sharpest, and you have to accept chromatic aberrations in high contrast situations (easily resolved in post), but it's capable of taking very nice photos considering the broad focal length range. It's also very light and quite compact. No WR, of course, but no lens of this type has that.
I think I paid about £120 for my lightly-used Minolta AF copy, and aside from a little dust behind the front element (which has no effect on images), it looks and works like a new lens. If you can find one at a sensible price, it's a good piece of kit to have. It won't ever replace good primes or shorter range zoom lenses in the IQ department, but what it does, it does well :)

Hi Geoffw, there are several approaches you might try:
1. Detoxification. Use just one lens for all your photographic tasks. Sure, it will need to be an excellent one, so it should be a Limited or D FA zoom that you don't already have, the more expensive the better ... go to one of our affiliates to buy one.
2. Medication. Stay so drunk you can't remember your eBay password.
3. Intervention. Arrange a meeting with fellow camera owners - they should bring along their most sought after glass ... the A* 135mm f1.8, the K28 f2, FA 200mm Macro, DCShooter silvered FA* 85, Leitaxed Zeiss Distagons ... and hold them up tantalizingly in front of your face, saying you don't need them.

Naming scheme (at least a simplified version ) - except for exceptions...
DA = Crop Sensor only lens (unless otherwise noted)
DAL = As above with slightly fewer features (lacks quick shift, may have polycarbonate mount, no hood included...)
DA* = Weather Sealed very high quality crop lens - typically fixed aperture if zoom.
DFA = Full Frame lens
DFA* = Weather Sealed very high quality full frame lens.
FA/FA* = Older Full Frame Autofocus lenses. The FA* are high quality but not sealed. Some Power Zoom lenses in this series.
FAJ = FA type lenses with no aperture ring. Lower quality overall.
F/F* = As above, mainly cosmetic differences. A few differences in functionality that are not typically important in DSLR use.
A/A* = Auto aperture, manual focus.
M/K = Functionally similar, manual focus and aperture.
M42 = screw mount lenses that can be adapted to use on the K mount cameras.
Other key attributes:
WR = Weather Resistant
AW = All Weather
HD = newer multicoating, typically also paired with curved aperture blades. Very high flare resistance.
SMC = Pentax multicoating name very long used with likely many generations without any name change. Newer SMC is likely very different from older SMC.
DC = In lens motor, type "DC", Noiser than SDM, faster, less reliability worries than SDM.
SDM = In lens motor, type "SDM". Some reliability concerns, slow to focus compared to Nikon/Canon in lens motors.
PLM = latest in lens motor option - only applies to one lens, and Pentax has said it will only work where very light focus elements are involved. Very fast.
Some DA, DA* lenses can be close to FF. The DA* 200, 300 and 560 are all considered very close and have FF profiles offered by Pentax to allow lens corrections in body for JPG output. Some additional lenses are considered very close or acceptable also. Very large topic.

First. This is NOT a political post. Please respect the point I am making and keep politics out.
Today there was a kerfuffle over a Trump staff member pictured on a couch. Later it was revealed this was because she was getting a cell phone picture of the event.

Two things struck me about this.
1) her posture and placement are poor for best results but acceptable results are likely given expectations and standards by which most images are viewed today.
2) no professional was involved in producing the picture she was getting. The iPhones and Samsungs and so forth have had an egalitarian impact on who is expected to take a picture. No more the specialized few - the accepted norm is that everyone has a high grade camera and the expertise to use it "well enough".
To me this means that we are a dying breed and our images are the last gasp of an industry that is laughably young in the grand scheme of things. But like a horse and buggy - the loss of economies of scale and dwindling user base will one day make cameras like ours curious oddities purchased only by wealthy people with odd hobbies.
