Anyone using HD DA18-50 WR DC RE?

The HD DA 18-50 is an amazing lens in different ways. First of all it is a "pancake" zoom lens and what also amazes me is the mediocre RE mechanism and the rough hood with dito cap. Second it delivers very good pictures with adorable colours, sometimes with a saturation that makes me think of having used a polarizer, that is amazing. I doubt that it is optically the same as the older 18-55 version II, it may have the same formula but that is all. But it is silent and fast focusing, the zoom mechanism works well. If I am honest, I won't buy one at the retail price. I bought one because I was curious how it would perform on my oldest DSLR's (Samsung GX-10 and the K-7) and in terms of IQ it beats the 18-55 WR on the K-7 with a great length. Don't worry about the "plastic" mount, because compared to the metal mounts it gives much softer touch when mounting on the camera. I do not see signs of wear on the lens mount, not more than on a metal mount, so it is sturdy enough to move over the metal parts of the camera mount. So I feel lucky that I was able to buy the HD version complete in box for just €69,00, which is about the same price in dollars at the moment. I had a choice between an SMC version and this one and you will not believe that the HD version (complete in box!) was cheaper than the SMC version. I just looked at the site of the shop I bought it and the second hand SMC version now is on offer for €119,00. A new HD DA version would cost me € 299,00 and I think you can get a better lens for that money (not as cute but the 18-135 comes to mind). But if you can find one for around €/$ 125,00 you buy yourself a lovely lens. In the morning you "extract" the lens and after a whole day of taking pictures you "retract" it, so you will not find much annoyance with the fiddly retraction mechanism, which is fiddly because of the position of the button and the small parts where you can put your fingers to turn it. Hope this helps.

July 20 2022: I just noticed that the price for the HD DA version is no longer 299,00 but € 199,00 which is the same as the older 18-55 WR version. Which makes the second hand price of € 119,00 for an SMC a bit steap... Having the experience with my affordable version I think that a price of around $ 200,00 is not bad for a new one. As I said, I was lucky with my copy.

Lens or lenses to bring for Asia trip?

Up front, I'm really a "zoom" guy - only prime I have is a very good macro lens.

In the past 3 years I've been very fortunate to have taken 3 trips overseas - and I used an 18-135 WR on 2 of them for about 95% of my shooting and an 18-200 on the other trip for probably 98% of my shots - probably 4500-5000 shots total. And the lenses I used the rest of the time were either an 11-16mm super wide or a 55-300 WR for some additional reach.

I like to have the option of immediately changing focal length if the situation warrants it. I'm not sure what the weather will be like for your proposed trips, but I do know it can rain a LOT in Asia so WR lenses would be high on my list.

Whatever you pick - have a super trip and take lots of photos!!

Lens or lenses to bring for Asia trip?

I'm planning to go visit a few countries in Asia for about a month. It would be either mid-December to mid-January for a winter trip, or some time between June and August for a summer trip. I would like to visit Japan, South Korea, and Singapore. I don't know which lenses to bring with a K-5, and I have the following:

Primes:
  1. A 28mm f/2.8

  2. DA 35mm f/2.4

  3. DA 50mm f/1.8

Zooms:
  1. DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 WR

  2. DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3

  3. A 35-105mm f/3.5

  4. D-FA 24-70mm f/2.8 WR

  5. Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8

I like traveling light. My favorite loadout is my K-5 with either the DA 35 or the DA 50. However, since this is a once in a lifetime trip, I'm having a hard time balancing between maximizing enjoyment (going light) or making sure I get the shots I want.

I usually have the most fun shooting with my DA 35 and DA 50 due to the size and weight. I dislike walking around with a heavy and clunky camera bumping into me or getting in the way otherwise. Whenever I go on trips with both primes and zooms, I end up using the DA 35 the most. The zooms barely get touched. If I focus on primes, I would bring the DA 35, DA 50, and DA 18-55 WR as a wide angle lens and for the WR.

The zooms offer more versatility though, as I wouldn't want to miss something due to switching lenses. If I were to choose zooms, I was thinking of either the D-FA 24-70 with the vertical grip to balance out the weight of the lens, or the A 35-105 f/3.5 (I love the way it feels) with the DA 18-55 WR as a wide angle lens and for the WR. I assume the 70-200 isn't necessary, and it's too big and heavy for my liking.

Has anyone made a trip work with only a few primes? Is the zoom a must? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

a chronic buyer seller; love for the 20-40

For those who are on the fence about this lens (and I often see people on the fence about the lens), I'm here to profess my love for the 20-40mm LTD. It's the only thing keeping me back from jumping to Fujifilm.

I don't think that this journey is atypical -- I started with M42 prime lenses (Super Tak 50mm 1.4, etc), manual focusing was cumbersome before focus peaking. Also, switching between bayonet and screw drive on the same camera body just wasn't always fun. Sometimes you just miss the moment. I sold the M42 lenses and bought similar M lenses. Meh, they have the metal barrel, but it's just not the same as holding the knurls on Takumars. I sold the M's and went for F lenses (backwards, I know.) Having autofocus is great! But then I got tired of switching lenses in general. And the screwdrive autofocus was pretty loud compared to other cameras around me. When the price of the 20-40mm dropped, I sold all of my lenses and Q to finance it. Finally, I get to use a WR lens, quiet DC motor autofocusing, AND the Takumar knurls!

Recently, B&H had a bundle for Fuji X-Pro 1 + 35mm + 27mm for $949, essentially the cost of the body was free. I could sell the 20-40mm, my camera bodies to fund the Fuji kit... but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I treat the 20-40mm as a 30mm with some leeway, and a very welcome leeway at that. I wasn't sure if I could go back to a 35mm prime, a focal length too narrow for some landscape shots. With the 20-40mm, I can give the camera/lens a quick rinse from a day at the beach, after sand just gets everywhere. I can take pictures by the poolside. I can take pictures in light rain and not worry about it. And most important of all, I look at the lens and it makes me want to pick it up. When I pick it up, I am reminded of how unique it is.

When I was reading about the X-Pro 1, I came across Zack Aria's article about how the Fuji system evokes an emotion for him to pick up the camera and use it. I can see that, I had the X30 for a bit. I've used the X100 briefly. Fuji makes great cameras and their JPEG engine is awesome. But for me, Pentax's WR lets you stop thinking about where you are with your electronics and more about capturing that memory or emotion. And really, it's all aided by the 20-40mm, which lets you forget about what lens you have on.

Pentax/Ricoh: De-cripple the K-mount! PETITION
Posted By froeschle

274 users already have signed this petition to de-cripple the Pentax K-mount (i.e. to restore the aperture ring coupler).

Excerpt from this interview:

QuoteQuote:

Q: Will the Pentax K-mount ever be "de-crippled" (i.e. will the aperture ring coupler be restored?)

QuoteQuote:

A: technology ... develops ... less importance for the users ... user merit ... user feelings ... if voices will be increased ... yes ...

One of the very few reasons, why I would consider to buy an APS-DSLR again: A de-crippled PKAF2-mount.
An important feature, which the D7000 offers but the K-5 II(s) still lacks.
Why not invest some cents or even dollars?

Pentaxians, let your voices be heard ;) :) !

Copied from #117:

QuoteQuote:

To summarize:

Statements from the interview at Photokina:
  • Feedback from enthusiast users will not be ignored in the Ricoh system.

  • A de-crippled K-mount would be realized (i.e. the aperture ring coupler would be restored), if such "user feelings" are expressed and the corresponding "voices will be increased".

Why this petition:
  • De-crippling the K-mount will lead to an increased and/or more reliable functionality with all lenses possessing an aperture ring.

  • Such an implementation would be straightforward (present in nearly all Pentax film SLRs) and at low cost (mechanical sensor + software implementation). Considering the price of a current DSLR, the additional charge should be marginal.

  • Thus, it is an ideal test case to check the promise of Pentax/Ricoh. Do they really care about the wishes of the enthusiast user base? Nikon, in comparison, cared and realized such a feature.

You did suggest some kind of "voting system or counting system" or "a poll". I asked for a counter or an "I'm in" button. This is the response I got from PentaxForums.com Staff:

I like being liked ;) . So, do so, if you wish (-> Pentax/Ricoh: De-cripple the K-mount! PETITION - PentaxForums.com). However, this thread is rather meant to support the idea or the petition (and not me :) ).
Just a reply here also would not be sufficient, as some members post several times and not all members agree with this campaign.
So, as in a typical petition, I have collected only the supporters up to now in the following way:

A printed version of this thread was given to the Pentax representatives at CP+.
The journalist of pentaxforums.com also included a brief paragraph about it and explained it verbally.
Unfortunately, they did not want to comment on it.
There was also no chance to chat with them after the interview.
So, communication still seems to be based on "transfer and pray".
Hopefully, they will take our feedback to heart.

Sticky: How to use/meter Manual & M42 Lenses on all Pentax DSLRs (K-1, K-3, K-5, K-30, etc)

Many Pentax DSLR owners want to use M42 screwmount (Takumar) lenses, or M or K manual lenses, on their cameras because of the low cost and relatively high image quality of these lenses.

If you're wondering whether or not these lenses can be used with Pentax DSLRs (or the K-01), then the answer is yes! Pentax as well as third-party manual and screwmount lenses can easily be mounted on any Pentax DSLR (such as the K-1 series, KP, K-3 series, K-70, K-S2, K-S1, K-50, K-500, K-30, K-5 series, K-r, K-x, K-7, K10D, K100D, K200D, *ist D, etc.) Just follow this guide!

Modern Pentax DSLRs use the Pentax "K-mount", which employs a bayonet and therefore differs significantly from the M42 screw mount. The older manual M and K (SMC Pentax-M, SMC Pentax) lenses actually use the bayonet, so they will not need an adapter - you can skip straight to the lower portion of this article (starting at "Important!") for information on how to meter with those lenses. Screwmount lenses usually have "Takumar" in their names, and in order to mount screwmount lenses on your k-mount body, you'll need a Pentax k to m42 adapter. Pictured above is the genuine Pentax adapter, which is ideally the one you want to get. Similar third-party adapters are also available. Caution: Many third-party adapters, such as this one, have a protruding flange which will prevent you from focusing all the way to infinity. If you want to buy a third-party adapter (they're generally cheaper), make sure that they don't have this flange. Here's an example of a good third-party adapter.

Once you have your adapter, the next step is to install it on your camera (it can easily be put on and removed on-the-fly). Check out the m42 to k adapter manual.

After you've installed the adapter, you'll want to mount the lens. This is done by screwing it into the camera until the lens feels firmly attached. The focusing window and lens ring should line up with the camera just like any other lens. Now that your lens is mounted, let's talk about how to take photos with it.

Important! The hard part is to get the camera to actually fire when a manual lens is mounted. In order to accomplish this, enter your camera's custom function menu, select the "Using Aperture Ring" setting (usually at the end of the menu, #21 on the K-7, #27 on the K-5, #27 on the K-3, #26 on the K-1), and set it to 2 (allowed). Once you do this, the shutter will at least fire, as it wouldn't have with this setting disabled (you would simply have seen an F-- indication on the top LCD/info screen). The setting description should read: 'Shutter will release when aperture ring is not set to the "A" position' when "allowed" is selected. Also note that the mount on the lens must be conductive for electrical current so that it shorts the electrical contacts on the camera body. All Pentax manufactured lenses have a conductive mount, but some third party lenses do not in which case the area of the mount touching the contacts must be sanded down.

K-30, K-50, K-500, K-70, K-S1, K-S2 and K-01 users: make sure you also set your green button "action in M/TAv Mode" to Tv SHIFT. This is found under the button customization menu (page 3 of the main menu) on the K-01 or as a custom function on the K-30, K-50 and K-500. On the K-S2 and K-70, look under the e-dial programming sub-menu under button customization in the record menu.

Finally, ensure that auto ISO is disabled.

At startup, if your camera asks you for the focal length, enter the actual focal length as labeled on the lens. This will ensure optimal Shake Reduction performance. For zooms, you can use the lower end of the zoom range (this ensures that there will be no over-compensation), or the focal length that you shoot at most often.

Now, let's discuss metering. Since manual lenses don't feed aperture data to the camera, the only way for the camera to check how much light is being passed through the lens is to measure the light while the lens is stopped down. Follow this procedure to properly meter with a screwmount, M, or K lens:

___0. Ensure that the "Using Aperture Ring" custom function is set to "2 (allowed)" (K-30/50/500/01 users must also ensure that the green button is configured to Tv Shift in M/TAv Mode) as described above
  1. Set your camera to M mode using the mode dial (your camera won't fire in other modes*)

  2. Compose and focus your image.

  3. Using the aperture ring (the ring at the very back of your lens; it will have numbers such as 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8 written on it), select your desired aperture setting. Note that the smaller the aperture number is, the more light passes through the lens, and the blurrier the out of focus areas of your photograph will be (and vice-versa). Note your lens will not stop down until step 5.

  4. [Screwmount lenses only] Switch the diaphragm clutch on your lens to "Manual" (you can leave it on Auto when composing and focusing if you don't want a dark viewfinder).

  5. Measure the light by either pressing the "Green Button" (older bodies may use the Av button), or pushing your power button to DOF preview mode (only available on high-end bodies). Your camera will automatically set the shutter speed for you.

All that's left now is for you to press the shutter release button to take your photo. Congratulations- you've now learned how to use M42 and M & K manual lenses with Pentax DSLRs!

*Screwmount lenses may also be used in Av mode since they are always stopped down to the aperture you will be shooting at (unlike M&K lenses, which are stopped down only when the shutter is released or when you meter as described above).

Note: if your aperture ring has an "A" on it, instead of doing stop-down metering as per this guide, you'll want to set the ring to "A" and use the camera's scrollweel to adjust the aperture via Av mode.
