I didn't think any of those were kit lenses for the K10D. Myself, I have a K200D, which came with the Pentax-DA 3.5-5.6 18-55mm AL II lens. This is supposed to be the best kit lens on the market, and is very reasonably priced.

Just popping in to say that I'm very satisfied with my K200D and the Pentax DA 1:3.5-5.6 18-55mm AL II kit lens. The IQ is superb.
Also, numerous testimonies rate this kit lens one of the best kit lenses around.
I would think that the OP's problem is the lens.

I absolutely love the SR in my K200D. The effect is clearly visible for handheld shots and does provide 2 - 3 stops improvement.
The old rule of thumb still applies, without SR use a minimum shutter speed of the reciprocal of the focal length (i.e. for a 50 mm lens, use 1/60 s or shorter). With SR switched on, you can get away with 1/8 s and still have an acceptable shot.
My understanding is that the same SR mechanism is built into all the newer Pentax cameras (K100D up to K20D and K-m). So there should not be any difference in the SR effect between these cameras.

Absolutely, this is the correct way to adjust diopter. Point camera towards something bright, then adjust diopter for max sharpness of the focus screen marks.

IMHO there is no way to calibrate white balance exactly. It's always a subjective adjustment.
For example, a white sheet of paper is the most common test subject. But again, the whiteness depends on the light source. So when is the paper white (or what exactly is white)?
Also, projecting a "white" image on your screen is not exact, because it depends on the projector adjustments.
My idea would be to include a white card or a gray card in one of the photos, then use the eyedropper tool to set the white/gray colour adjustment in your photo editor.
When you know the amount of correction, you can batch process all pictures using the same correction.
But by all means, use a fixed white balance, not auto, to get consistency.

I think the simple answer to the OP's question is that RAW vs. JPG is about picture quality, while the size in Megapixels determines the maximum print size. The two are not related in any way.
In RAW you have no in-camera processing, but can do your own processing in Photoshop or other editor. Very similar to a negative in the film world.

I'm happy with my K200D, it has the same resolution as the K10D (the same sensor in fact). The higher resolution of the K20D I just don't need for my purposes.
The new K-m seem a little limited for me, and the water sealing of the K200D is comfortable.
But the main advantage in my opinion is the standard batteries used. I can get AA batteries in any shop nearby should my rechargeables run out on me.

The Remote Assistant is available on PENTAX : Home for free download to K10D/K20D users.
However, the K10D must have the 1.20 or later firmware installed, available at the same site.

Doing portraits with anything shorter that 70 mm is against my principles. A portrait with 25 mm is less than flattering for the model, to put it mildly.

This is not exactly the case. The polarizing effect is within the one piece of glass.
The effect is also dependent of the angle of light. In some conditions you don't see an effect at all.
The best way to use the filter is to look through the viewfinder and rotate the filter for maximum effect.
A polarizing filter reduces the light by two or more f-stops, so don't put it on unless you need it.

I am just about to make my own wired remote control, based on knowledge I picked up from another forum (works for K10D as well as K100D):
Just above the USB connector there is a 2.5 mm stereo jack for remote control.
On the 2.5 mm stereo plug the pinout is
- tip: Shutter
- ring: Focus
- sleeve: Common
Shorting ring to sleeve activates autofocus
Shorting tip to sleeve releases the shutter
Wiring a latching switch in parallel to a momentary pushbutton for the shutter provides a convenient handling of long Bulb exposures.
