Black & White Crossroads

As an aviation oriented man I like to look up and aircraft always attract my attention. Forgot to adjust aperture, anywhere around f7 would probably have been best for sharpness. Framing was a bit tough, cropping to 4:3 and leaving the classic building on the right and the traffic sings on the left in the frame seemed to work best.

Abstract Panning the landing, saved by the strobe?

A few results that worked more the way I intended them to. Normally my preference is to have the nose section sharp (non-blurred), but it's quite hard to control the panning motion that precise. Then being at the touchdown zone doesn't make it any easier as vertical motion and rotation may be present as well. Possibly not be the best technique if you really need a good shot of a particular plane at a particular time, but if that doesn't apply it's fun to set out and get lucky. Also a 70-200 lens will be the better choice, but budget has a different opinion

Night Lunar eclipse at the airport

The lunar eclipse as seen in the Netherlands, airport style. Being on shift, I decided to bring some gear and see if and what I might be allowed to do at the field. Got more than I could have asked for with a session on one of the main runways :)

Recorded a 360 panorama and a few regular shots. During the latter a small patch a fog rolled in and the shadow of the K-1 is projected on that by the headlights of the vehicle behind me. Also gave the photo a heavy orange glow as a result from the compulsory orange/yellow alert lights. Hind sight the shadows may have been prevented by placing the tripod on the hood of the vehicle. 10s exposure.

Landscape K1, k2, k3, k4.. K-5

Hi all,

So I ordered that k2 k1 PF t-shirt (brilliant design) and it sent me on a nice trip down memory lane. In the summer of 2011 I joined a trek to the K2 base camp. This trek was also reason to make the jump from compact to dslr. The k-5 was just released and it's weather seal, ergonomics and sensor quality convinced me it was the body to go with. I've never regretted that decision. On this trek the plastic WR kit lenses went in the bag along with the da 10-17 fish eye and the sigma dc 17-50 f2.8. That sigma was on pretty much all the time, but it made way for the da 10-17 for panorama purposes on a few occasions. The trek is a formidable one. Hot, dry and unforgiving but as much rewarding.

#1 K1 / Masherbrum. Wide crop with lightroom modern 05 color profile

#2 K3 Gasherbrum IV.

#3 K2, Broad Peak and Gasherbrum IV at night, altitude 4500m. Feeling rather exhausted at that time I had to force myself out of the warm sleeping bag and tent to get dressed again and shoot the pictures. The fear of regret of a missed opportunity can be a strong motivator to move against comfort. 3x 120s 10mm f3.5 iso1600 panorama. Prioritised low iso but shutter speed was too long to prevent star trails. These settings did enable retrieving shadow detail in post. Stitched with ptgui pro.

#4 K2 and Broad Peak. Part of a hand held 360 panorama. 10mm 1/125s f14 iso80. Ptgui pro stitch. Recently re-stitched the panorama to get rid of the last stitch errors. I consider this my best / most rewarding photographic achievement since photography became hobby. https://www.360cities.net/image/broad-peak-basecamp-and-k2

#5 K2 in the clouds. Weather moved in and we had to leave one day early to cross a pass. This pass is the only location where Gasherbrum I / hidden peak / K5 can be seen on the trek. It's one of the total 14 peaks over 8000m of which 4 are located in this area. Unfortunately it remained hidden because of the weather but we did get an impressive last view of K2.

#6 K4 / Gasherbrum II. Another peak over 8000m+. The area is so congested with tall peaks it hardly looks like anything special..

Pentax k-5, iso1600, 120s, f3.5 10mm, 3 horizontal fish-eye image panorama. Date June 24, 2011. Location 'Concordia', glacial convergence point of the Baltoro, Godwin Austen and Vigne glaciers in the Karakoram mountain range of Pakistan. 4550m / 14900ft altitude. A raw bit of nature under the stars complemented by shooting stars and / or satellite flares. Shutter speed was set too long to prevent star trails, the intent was to keep the iso low.

*Edit: lens is da 10-17 f3.5-4.5 not 3.3-4.5

Does the adobe dfa 24-70 lens profile introduce or accentuate wavy / moiré patterns?

Thanks everyone, appreciate the insight. Not bothering with lens profiles in this case makes sense, it's one of those things that slipped into the workflow without giving it much thought. Running into these 'wavy' results is something new though, I've pushed the limits with other systems before including the k-5 but never seen this. I looked into the down/upsizing method for lightroom cc but couldn't really find what method is used or how it can be changed, same for import 8/16 bit setting. I'll certainly try the Bicubic smoother with photoshop with dedicated manual corrections, but the main issue seems to be resolved by not using the lens profile.

Nice one, love the blue throughout the frame and those clouds are quite spectacular! I personally love HDR, it's a great way of getting the most out of a scene.. To be sure not the dreaded 'hdr-look' but edited such that one preferably couldn't tell that it was an hdr image. That said, the camera shutter will live longer without bracketing many exposures ;)

Here's one user who has the p1000 on order and waiting. Kind of an extreme numbers junkie and the specs of this nikon, I like them. Got a few other superzooms laying around, my most favourite allrounder is the canon sx60hs. It has the range, raw, mic input and good video controls. Also own the p900 and it's pretty bad for video quality, on board mic and audio processing is utter garbage with no mic input. And no raw.. The coming big brother fixes a number of these things. Managed to pull a few shots off with the p900 that I certainly couldn't have done with my pentax gear. I'm an aviation enthusiast so (lot's of) tele is always welcome; and like to record video alongside the runway. My aim with the p1000 is to get aviation photo / video, put the sun or moon behind distant architecture, put aviation in front of the moon and shoot astro. Did iss solar and lunar transitions with the p900 and it's excellent fun. Also shot some planets and though I got a few fun results like the Venus crescent, 'almost' recognisable rings of Saturn and Jupiter with some surface detail and moons, it's still pretty much toy stuff. I'd be interested to see what 1000mm more can do with raw enabled and if stacking would be an option. Couldn't stack planets with the p900, they were still simply too small, of course no tracking, no raw and extreme risk of camera shake. How awesome would it be if they threw some astro-tracer tech in there..

Iss solar transit / p900. Would love to try this with it's bigger sibling when it arrives

Iss lunar transit / p900

Battery life with info display off versus on

Hi, I haven't compared in numbers; but about a month ago I did a time lapse with the k-1 and fired 777 13s exposures over a period of 4h19min freezing conditions. Display was not in use of course and image review was set to off. Normally when I'm out shooting I'll use the tilt screen for manual focus for half the time and the battery drains considerably faster in much warmer conditions. It definitely makes a difference.
