Cheers, thanks guys. Get the side-on usually results in most uniform sharpness. And of course a B747 is never a dull sight! Image attached is from 2011, I'm hoping to repeat it some day though it feels like hoping to win a lottery twice.

A few results that worked more the way I intended them to. Normally my preference is to have the nose section sharp (non-blurred), but it's quite hard to control the panning motion that precise. Then being at the touchdown zone doesn't make it any easier as vertical motion and rotation may be present as well. Possibly not be the best technique if you really need a good shot of a particular plane at a particular time, but if that doesn't apply it's fun to set out and get lucky. Also a 70-200 lens will be the better choice, but budget has a different opinion :lol:

Panning picture from a while back, don't think I shared it before. Keeps me wondering if it was a failed shot or not. Or both? The panning went wrong, but there's some thick smoke from the landing which is frozen in a motion blurred scene which looks.. kind of neat if I say so myself :)

The lunar eclipse as seen in the Netherlands, airport style. Being on shift, I decided to bring some gear and see if and what I might be allowed to do at the field. Got more than I could have asked for with a session on one of the main runways :)
Recorded a 360 panorama and a few regular shots. During the latter a small patch a fog rolled in and the shadow of the K-1 is projected on that by the headlights of the vehicle behind me. Also gave the photo a heavy orange glow as a result from the compulsory orange/yellow alert lights. Hind sight the shadows may have been prevented by placing the tripod on the hood of the vehicle. 10s exposure.

Tripods I'll always put in the checked baggage, never had a problem with that. Camera's / bodies / lenses I'll bring on the plane. On a rare occasion security wants to have another look. Challenges I met was 1 security officer at Split (Croatia) not being sure about bringing a drone / batteries in the cabin baggage but fortunately his colleague could inform him it was good. And on a vacation to Oman I brought 'so much' that I could hardly convince the border police it wasn't a business trip. They'll x-ray all baggage coming into the country. After plenty questions I was allowed through but was told I could take photos but no video. Had to leave the drone (phantom) on the airport but fortunately the gopro on the gimbal looked 'harmless' enough. I knew the drone was going to be a challenge at some point so wasn't too taken by it. Mostly just costed a lot of extra time but received everything in good order on the return journey. Funny addition to the story is that on that return journey, after picking the drone up we got a police officer to guide us through all security stages. Probably to inform all was good and we should be allowed through. It was a friendly young fellow and after learning we were Dutch he started talking about his favourite soccer player, a Dutch fellow as well. I'm not much of a soccer fan but we had a brilliant time after that.

I'll bring a camera on anything that's more than general socialising or work. The travel light / general purpose option is the Panasonic lx100. If taking pictures is the subject I'll bring this, it's the best shooting experience. If I need pictures of a subject I'll bring a dedicated system which today would be the K-1 and / or a small sensor superzoom.

Hi all,
So I ordered that k2 k1 PF t-shirt (brilliant design) and it sent me on a nice trip down memory lane. In the summer of 2011 I joined a trek to the K2 base camp. This trek was also reason to make the jump from compact to dslr. The k-5 was just released and it's weather seal, ergonomics and sensor quality convinced me it was the body to go with. I've never regretted that decision. On this trek the plastic WR kit lenses went in the bag along with the da 10-17 fish eye and the sigma dc 17-50 f2.8. That sigma was on pretty much all the time, but it made way for the da 10-17 for panorama purposes on a few occasions. The trek is a formidable one. Hot, dry and unforgiving but as much rewarding.
#1 K1 / Masherbrum. Wide crop with lightroom modern 05 color profile
#2 K3 Gasherbrum IV.
#3 K2, Broad Peak and Gasherbrum IV at night, altitude 4500m. Feeling rather exhausted at that time I had to force myself out of the warm sleeping bag and tent to get dressed again and shoot the pictures. The fear of regret of a missed opportunity can be a strong motivator to move against comfort. 3x 120s 10mm f3.5 iso1600 panorama. Prioritised low iso but shutter speed was too long to prevent star trails. These settings did enable retrieving shadow detail in post. Stitched with ptgui pro.
#4 K2 and Broad Peak. Part of a hand held 360 panorama. 10mm 1/125s f14 iso80. Ptgui pro stitch. Recently re-stitched the panorama to get rid of the last stitch errors. #5 K2 in the clouds. Weather moved in and we had to leave one day early to cross a pass. This pass is the only location where Gasherbrum I / hidden peak / K5 can be seen on the trek. It's one of the total 14 peaks over 8000m of which 4 are located in this area. Unfortunately it remained hidden because of the weather but we did get an impressive last view of K2.
#6 K4 / Gasherbrum II. Another peak over 8000m+. The area is so congested with tall peaks it hardly looks like anything special..

As an aviation oriented man I like to look up and aircraft always attract my attention. Forgot to adjust aperture, anywhere around f7 would probably have been best for sharpness. Framing was a bit tough, cropping to 4:3 and leaving the classic building on the right and the traffic sings on the left in the frame seemed to work best.

Sigma dc 30mm f1.4, only 1.x lens I own. Would accompany me on holidays with potential for astro. Since this summer the main astro combo would be the K-1 with dfa 24-70. This dc 30mm can 'almost' be used on the K-1, but never tested in in the field.

Thanks everyone, appreciate the insight. Not bothering with lens profiles in this case makes sense, it's one of those things that slipped into the workflow without giving it much thought. Running into these 'wavy' results is something new though, I've pushed the limits with other systems before including the k-5 but never seen this. I looked into the down/upsizing method for lightroom cc but couldn't really find what method is used or how it can be changed, same for import 8/16 bit setting. I'll certainly try the Bicubic smoother with photoshop with dedicated manual corrections, but the main issue seems to be resolved by not using the lens profile.

Hi all,
I've been a happy K-1 owner since June this year. I've done some low-light shoots and really like that full frame sensor! It's my first ff so probably no wonders it's a joy. But, with low light I would run into these wavy patterns if the dynamic range was exploited heavily in post. At first I wasn't sure what to make of it, but during a recent shoot the patterns got pretty hefty so I decided to read a few things on the potential moire thing and play with some settings in adobe lightroom cc.
I was surprised to at some point find it was the lightroom cc dfa 24-70 lens profile that introduced them.. Still have to find out if it's distortion correction in general that will get these patterns going; it doesn't seem to be related to fine detail in the photos. Photos where the focus wasn't spot on seem to suffer as well. I understand these examples have been pushed beyond what might be acceptable, but the occasion begged photos no matter what and they do show rather well my point. If I export them at 1440p (my screen resolution) it's seems to be more clearly visible. Has anyone else run into this by any chance?
