Pentax 560 mm is just over 20 inches without the lens hood, what were they thinking? Both Nikon and Canon 500 mm are about 15 inches. What bag, or even if there is one who would want to carry, a 20 inch lens plus camera attached?
It seems as if Pentax is relying on the used lens market to keep its base going. Well, there are no 400, 500 0r 600 mm available at the moment, what do we do, just wait?

did you guys know that Sigma disables the distance limiter on the Pentax version of the 500 mm?
this is crazy, that is a major feature, why would you want to do that?
it also does not come with the HSM motor.

can you post a picture off of your 250-600? anything you are proud of would do but my preference would be a BIF.

have you found the Pentax sensor shift to work well when tracking a bird?
I am asking because if I can't find a used 250-600 I will need to decide between a Sigma 500 vs a Canon 500 (I own various Canon bodies).
My preference would have been to save the money and buy the Sigma. I would do so if I had some evidence that the sensor shift would work well with it. If not I would look for a used 500 L F4.
My goal is to move away form Canon for cost purposes, just can't see spending over $10K on lenses.

This was taken with the DA* 60-250. Picture came out very clear, but that is easy when the bird let's you close. The problem I've had is that 250 mm is just not enough,

No worries Dan, I knew what you meant.
Meanwhile, the local Pentax dealer is having a Sigma day sometime in the next three weeks or so.
They asked me which lenses I would like to test for the day as the Sigma rep is willing to bring up loners.
Well then, no reason to go low, I will be testing the 300 2.8 and the 500 4.5
Until then I am keeping my eyes open for a used Pentax 250-600.

Hey Dan, how did you like the picture of the Hawk? Considering the limitation of the DA* 65-250 I thought overall the camera performed pretty well.

its good news that you like the DA*300, I am looking at it also.
does your continuous focus track well with it?
and lastly, if you had a choice, would you go for the Sigma 300 2.8? It seems faster but I do loose the WR, and like you said that is a pretty cool feature.

Thank you Greg.
I tested the continuous autofocus today and my new K5II/s froze. It was not a buffer issue, I waited quite a while.

At the end of the day, there are two issues to overcome, shutter vibration and camera movement from pressing the trigger.
When I do shoot this way is to concentrate on keeping absolutely still, not wanting my depressing the trigger to change composition or focus.
Either way, I am not disappointed by this, just will have to get used to it.

Well, you see Wired, that is what I get for assuming. Good to know you've got paying work!
I've been testing all morning K5II/s vs 7D, this won't really help you with the K5 analysis but here it goes.
Low light focus definitely faster on K.
Zooming in on test pattern, 100 ISO, tripod, f8, 21mm, noticeably less noise on K.
Took camera outside, snowed last night, provided good chance to test af on low contrast.
Both cameras did not have problem with focusing, color rendition was completely different, I have a lot of work to do setting up the K.
In general Canon colors where richer, most noticeable in blue sky (most everything else was white!!).
One negative is that when shutter is set to 2 second lag the canon viewfinder remains open until shutter takes picture, K closes and you cannot see as you wait the 2 seconds.
I often choose this option so that I can squeeze the shot and hold steady as I wait the two seconds. With the K I am kind of in the dark.
Lastly, af in low light, unbelievable!!!!! K was able to focus in dark garage, Canon could not. K af assist came on a couple of times, was immediate. Mostly it focused without assist.
I've never had a camera that could focus in this low light, I've owned many generations of Canon beginning with the 10D.

I am sorry pz1fan, to give you good feedback I would have to compare same or similar pictures and unfortunately I shot completely different subjects under completely different circumstances.
Tomorrow I will have a chance to get you some feedback on difference in sharpness. Retiring for the night.

Good to know about the speed of the autofocus, I would have thought the older the slower.
While I would lose the zoom, I am thinking of the new 560 as it is weather proofed.
If the 250-600 was significantly cheaper it would make sense but if they are close in price I would probably rather take a chance on new technology.

Interesting about the FA*300. What is a better market place, ebay or forums?

I have had the K5II/s for 6 hours now and only tested the K5 (I am a Canon shooter). My experience with the K5 is roughly 1,000 clicks or so (not extensive).
Having said that, I would say that most reviews that came out of the show were correct.
AF seems faster, definitely good in low light, screen is a little better (definitely not worth upgrading for).
That is really about it. I purchased the camera because it seemed useless to get the K5 since the K5II/s was already announced.
My photography requires low light performance and weather proofing.
Unless you need a little faster AF, I would spend the money on lenses.
The sensor is the same (other than focus), so really it is going to be the glass that will bring your shots to the next level.
Neither a great camera and great lenses will help poor technique, but great technique with a poor camera and poor lenses will never produce a great product.
K-5 is a great camera, and looking at your lens list it looks as if you are primarily a landscape and portrait shooter.
K5II/s could help with the rug rats but I think you should put your money on FA31 Ltd lens. If you have not used those before you should definitely look into them, they are the primary reason for my switching to Pentax (when evaluating sharpness). Also the DA15 ltd, a great landscape lens.
I tried to pull a Sherlock Holmes, basically looking at your lens list to determine your type of shooting and what you would enjoy more, the K5II/s or more primes.
Hope you don't mind my assumptions.

I am not looking for advice on how to take BIF pictures, I am searching for Pentax lens information.
I just received my new K5II/s, which is also my first Pentax. I switched to gain a weather proofing and better low light performance, a must for animal photography.
I am leaving Canon after 20 plus years, to shoot BIF I used a 300 2.8 and 100-400 L series lenses. With Canon you really need the 400 2.8 to get the best possible chance at shooting absolutely sharp BIF pictures, the problem is the $10,500 price tag. They are ready available in the rental market, just a pain to work that way.
With Pentax I was hoping to start off with the DA 300 f4, using a bit higher ISO to get to the 500 and higher shutter speeds and then hopefully getting a 560.

Has anyone shot the older 400mm and 600mm Pentax and did you have any luck with them?
Does the Sensor Shake Reduction turn off at higher shutter speeds as it is probably useless by then?
Is autofocus of those older lenses fast enough? I've mainly shot fast moving targets with autofocus and would be terrible at trying to manual focus those subjects.
Is Sigma really the only legitimate option?

Picked up my K5II/s from Mogil's on the Mountain here in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
Jay (Owner) let me borrow a DA 21 mm to play with today (I purchased camera without lens).
This is my first Pentax, did a bunch of research on the K5 and elected to wait for this revision.
I've only had it a few hours and I am in love. I have been shooting Canon for over 20 years and Nikon before that.
Can't comment on Nikon as I got out before the digitals came out, but I love this camera compared to my 7D.
Focus is extremely fast and accurate, especially in low light.
I am reviewing pirctures taken today comparing to similar pictures taken with 7D.
While the noise of the DA21 autofocus is something I will have to get used to, it is very accurate and definetly fast.
I like the weight and feel of this camera, I was getting tired of the huge Canon systems but could not find anything to match the quality.
I am looking forward to building a positive relationship with this camera, if so I will have plenty of Canon equipment up on eBay soon!!

I searched everywhere Bossa and could not find any, other than the silly video of the guy on the couch test focusing near.
This is my first Pentax and I can only compare it to the K5 that I've been testing at the store.
What I have noticed from my first shots today is that it is very accurate, focus dead on.

Just picked up mine at Mogil's on the Mountain here in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Jay (owner) called to inform me to hurry to the shop, my camera had arrived a day early!!!
It is dark today as we are getting some snow, low light focus is amazing. This is my first Pentax, I am switching over from Canon after 20 years. I've done a pretty therough test of the K-5 and I am certain all of you will be happy with the K-5II/s. I am not sure if everyone will need to upgrade as it seems to really shine in lower light and not everyone needs that. At the shop I had a K-5 next to it and tested the af, it definetly appeared faster but that could also be me wanting it to be so. The new screen is noticebly better. I wish all of you good luck and look forward to getting my lens order in. By the way, I am ordering the new 560 Telephoto, does anyone know if the Sensor Shift will work with it? I had heard that it automatically shuts off above a certain focal range but don't know what that number is.

Spent the morning looking at your posts, good on you Brother.
I live in the mountains above 6,500 feet, weather proofing is important but more so on my long glass.
Wheather proofing on my everyday zoom is less of an issue, I am looking for quality.
Life is different for me Heie, while you are out there looking out for your men in harms way, I am walking the woods hunting for the perfect shot.
You provide me the ability to enjoy my hobby in a safe environment and I thank you for that.
I believe that what you are doing for your country today will echo an eternity.

I should have written Canon 24-70 L II 2.8, they no longer make the regular 2.8. When looking at Canon one has to realize that the new II series lenses are way much more money and slightly better performance, not a good combination.
