I know it is designed for capturing the night sky... but what about a -properly filtered- lens shooting a photo of the sun?
Is the filter dark enough to save the sensor, but still bright enough to allow for a photograph with a short exposure time?
Does the Astrotracer function moving the sensor accounting for the rotation of the earth help with the sun, or cause issues?
Just curious. Thanks for any feedback. ---------- Post added 03-25-24 at 07:22 PM ---------- When I searched for info on this, I didn't see the results that are in the "similar thread" list below. I think this was somewhat indirectly answered.

SMC Pentax-DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED [IF] SDM Asking Price
350.00 USD Item Location
Oregon (United States) Item Description
SMC Pentax-DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED [IF] SDM Lens
Great copy purchased in 2007 as a pre-order. Zero issues with SDM or other lens functions, fully functional with no fungus, sticky blades, etc. Screwdrive has never been used, so I don't know about its functionality.
Includes the box, literature, case, hood, and caps.
Note: The rear ring (not the notched one, the solid one) that the lens hood attaches to, had a partial split perhaps six years ago. It was glued back down and had worked fine ever since. This is external only, and does not affect lens operation. A close up of the area is included. Sorry for the cell phone photo...
Mechanically and optically in excellent condition. I marked this as "good" because of the lens hood ring. Are you the original owner of the item being sold?

I think the DA* 50-135 is unchanged moving from a K5 to a K3iii. Still a great lens, and pretty much my go to. (A pre-ordered first run of the lens with no SDM issues)
I bought the DA* 300 after getting the K3iii, so I don't have a before and after.

When it was still somewhat new, it was frequently covered in waterfall spray... and once it was drenched in a HEAVY downpour up a canyon in the redwoods. It was a horrible storm, and it came through without any issues. That being said, the camera is old enough that I wouldn't do that today...

I am probably split... About 45% of the time it is the 16-85mm or 50-135mm. 10% of the time, something else.

Lens package consisting of:- Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens
- Pentax Lens Case S80-120 (Soft)
- Tiffen 62mm Digital Ultra Clear Filter
- Hoya 62mm (Moose's) Warm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter
I picked this up as a travel lens/all-in-one and it never let me down... A gigantic upgrade from the 18-55mm kit lens.
I am using my 16-85mm lens more than this gem, so I am parting with it. Since I won't have the lens, I won't need the soft case or the filters. (This is the only lens I have that uses a 62mm filter thread size.)
The lens is in excellent condition. The only issue I am aware of is some scuffing on the lens hood. Optics are clean and clear and the blades work normally. Zero focus issues on my K-5, with standard or live view.
Zoom does not creep, it stays where you put it.

I am aware of the potential stress issues with storing the camera with the GPS unit attached.
The reason I was asking about a bag was to see if anyone knew of a bag where the risk is minimized due to the (thoughtful) design of the bag. If there is a bag designed to protect the camera +GPS, I would consider it. If there isn't, then I won't be doing it.
Thanks for the feedback.

Quick bag question...
I have a good travel bag that fits my K-5 with a 18-135 lens attached. There is room for one additional lens and also some accessories. It cannot accept the K-5 with the O-GPS1 attached however...
Any suggestions on a smallish travel bag (for a minimal travel kit) that will hold the K-5 with both a lens and the GPS unit attached?
Thanks for any advice/experience!

I was talking to a friend about a slide duplicator assembly I made out of Lego to fit on the DA 35mm Limited Macro lens. It worked pretty good, but I didn't take any pictures of it.
Would you like to share anything that you have made for your photography hobby/job/addiction?
A cool tripod add-on, perhaps a camera stabilization system, a desktop product photo box for eBay listings, a unique backlighting system for portraits, an astrophotography barn door tracker, flash diffuser, etc. Anything you would care to share?
Feel free to share items of your own design or maybe a commercial kit that would be interesting and a time saver for those who want to try it.

I saw this page years ago... there are probably better ones, but it does a good job of explaining and demonstrating lens glass issues. The Flashlight Test @ Ken Rockwell
In looking at this page though, I wonder if it is an issue with the cement between two bonded pieces of glass... Re-cementing doublet elements with Canadian balsam @ MF Lenses
I am not an expert at this, just putting my two cents in.

I think the experts are doing a good job at providing info and links for you. I'll show you what I did, for when I am out...
I have a version of this document with me when I am out taking pics in my home state of Oregon. I went to the Dark Site Finder and captured my area. I then added local information to help me when I am out. If I happen to be near LaPine (South of Bend in the illustration), for example, I can see that if I drive a short distance south or east I am in a "Typical truly dark site". If I go past Ft. Rock, I am in a "Excellent dark-sky site" according to night sky brightness Bortle scale rating.
when I am out taking (nature) pics I could access the website on a mobile device, however, I am not always in an area with service. |

I really like the fixed size of my DA* 50-135 lens. When zooming or focusing the lens barrel does not extend (or rotate). It seems like this enhances the weather sealing of the lens, and without the air being pulled into or pushed out of the lens when extending or contracting, a design that "causes" less dust to appear in the lens.
Do my thoughts make sense? Is this something that can be measured?
Does Pentax make any other fixed length (zoom or prime) lenses that do not extend when changing focal length or focusing (internal focusing and internal zooming)?
Thanks for any thoughts or information!

Pentax K 28mm f2.0 Asking Price
600.00 USD Item Location
Oregon (United States) Item Description
Rare Pentax K 28mm f2.0 (Pentax build of a Zeiss Distagon "Hollywood")
This is the famous Pentax branded lens using the floating focus optic design of Dr. Erhard Glatzel. The same lens design was used in the Zeiss Distagon 28mm F/2 T* "Hollywood". The Pentax build of this lens came from a partnership with Zeiss. SMC Pentax 28mm F2 Reviews - K Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

I am not an expert on legacy camera lenses, so I will try to describe and document everything I can. Please look at the pictures or contact me with any questions.
Performance is outstanding, sharp clear images. Well controlled CA, little distortion, beautiful bokeh, and rich vibrant colors that almost have a 3D punch to them.
Externally the lens, for being 40 years old, is in very good condition. There are two minor issues with brassing. One, with a small dimple/dent near the right side f22 indicator on the aperture scale. One above the 'Made in Japan" label on backside of the lens housing. You can see them in the pictures. I could not locate any damage to the filter ring. It accepts filters and the lens cap without issue.
Internals are fully functional. Focusing is smooth, the aperture ring is normal with no visible oil on the blades. The "green button" manual mode works on Pentax DSLR cameras. Typical of lenses of this age, there is a little dust in the lens, which is illustrated in one of the photographs.
The front lens cap is the correct all black "Asahi Pentax" version. The condition of the cap is fair. There are several dents in the plastic, but it is fully functional as both spring clips work normally. I believe the rear cap is the correct one. It is a standard looking black "Asahi Opt. Co." cap.
Includes:
The lens itself
Front lens cap
An Asahi (perhaps correct) rear cap
A third party leather, or leather type, felt lined soft drawstring storage bag.
All items are pictured.

Why am I parting with this lens? When I saw if for sale, I had to get it. After using it, my focal length preference is still definitely not 28mm. On my K-5, I prefer 14-20 or 100-135. Turns out, I just wouldn't use it enough to justify it. I don't want it to set in a bag or on a shelf here. My loss is your gain. If 28mm is your thing, you'll be happy with this.

I found this at a local reseller of "geek toys" for only $169. What a surprise!
It is in pretty good shape. Very nice externally, all internals work just fine. There are only a very few specs of dust near the outer edge. (Those are reflections in the front view below)
I have only taken a few test pics so far, can't wait to give it a proper test!
I have already ordered the proper front cap, thanks to another user, monochrome
Now to track down the rear cap, hood, and that elusive optional hard case...

Looking at my photos, most of my favorites are in the 16-21mm range. In actual use, I think the 100-135 range is the one I am most comfortable working in. Two answers in one...
