For my AA battery needs I have used Eneloops and they are great. They are powerful, last long, and keep their charge for a long time when not in use. They also come in lots of different colors if that's your thing (helps keep track of which set gets used too!).

Had the DA 18-250 for a couple of years and used it extensively for travels. It had its flaws, but it did the job well. I really grew to like and trust the lens.
This past holiday season I got the Sigma 18-300 and it is indeed much sharper than the 18-250, both in the center and edges and corners, across all focal lengths. I would move the 18-250 for whatever you can and put that towards the 18-300, it should serve you well for a long time.

Great video! It's refreshing to see a nicely done video from the sea of mediocre ones out there on the internet.
In my experience one thing that modern glass has over vintage counterparts are modern coatings. It would have been nice to see a comparison in some situations involving sunlight, but that may not matter all that much with macro usage (it definitely does with wider angle lenses though).

I think the key is here:
The lazy media production company should have just paid $50 to have an aesthetically pleasing actor to do the jogging instead.

Nice report!
I have found a 3 lens travel kit to be optimal:
- General purpose zoom
- Wide angle
- Low-light prime
Looks like others feel the same.

I wonder how heavy this thing is going to be. It seems smaller than the 15-30, so it's probably lighter, but the 15-30 is a brick so that's not saying much.
The Sigma 10-20 4-5.6 was a bulky lens but it was surprisingly light, so hopefully this new lens is closer to that, though that seems doubtful since it's an f2.8.
Oh well, the way I see it, the 11-18 will save me from carrying around a da15 and the SamBoRokiTar 10mm.
Finally, something in the Pentax lineup to get really excited about. Unless it's something absurd like $1500, I'll probably buy it on day 1.

Good list.
Also add to this
- The AF module of the camera body.
Older camera bodies (like my K30) had the SAFOX IXi+ AF system which could operate at -1EV. Newer ones (like in my KS2) have newer modules, like the SAFOX X system that can operate at up to -3 EV. In my non-lab testing, I've found that indeed the KS2 focuses quicker and more accurately in lower light than the K30 using the same lens.

Thanks for this!
I emailed Precision Camera Works last week (NOT the one in CT) and they haven't replied. So much for customer service . . .
I'll drop Advance Camera Repair a line and see what they think. Also, since Portland is close to Vancouver, maybe shipping will be reasonable. ---------- Post added 11-14-16 at 01:30 AM ----------
Nice blog post. Thanks for the link. I'm just getting back into photography so I have't visited the lensrentals blog in a while, but they really put out quality articles. This one seems quite relevant.

Sup guys, been a while. Career changes for the past couple of years kept me away from photography. I even sold most of my lenses to help fund some ventures.
But now I'm settled and looking to get back into photography, so I hopped on to the local Craigslist to see if there was anything worth picking up and to rebuild my lens collection again. And there was! Someone had just listed a Sigma 24mm 2.8 Super Wide II AF for $80 Canada bucks, so I picked it up and did my first photo walk in a while. Felt good man.

First share with the 18-135
Before heading home from work, I looked out the window and saw that it was raining. So I laboriously took out my rain gear and put it all on.
By the time I stepped out of the office, the rain was completely gone. I was too lazy to take off my rain gear so I just sweated it home.
On the plus side, the recent rain and the incoming sun produced this nice rainbow.

Tripod
Fast lens - Fast 50mm's are quite cheap, and can help you get those low-light shots you need.
Steady hand
It's also quite amazing how much detail you can rescue from the shadows in a RAW file. A picture might look dark on your LCD, but try and see what you can do with it through post-processing.
Also, I've found the shake reduction to be quite good. After some practice, I can usually get good shots at 1/20 if needed.

I've owned 2 copies of the 16-45 and they both showed signs of that happening. It's why I avoid that lens.

Here's a question that I can't find the answer to.
Will the lens work in retracted mode? Kind of like a fake 18mm f4 pancake?

Me and a friend went looking for a hut somewhere in the Pemberton area of BC, Canada. We could not find it, and we ended up having to camp outside. My friend decided to make camp within the trees, but I opted to camp out on a frozen lake. A middle-of-the-night bathroom break got me out of the tent, and before I got back in I realized the phenomenal sight I was witnessing. I sat for a while, just staring, when I decided I would try and capture the scene as best I could. My hope is that, with this photo, I am able to convey what I was feeling that night. I think certain types of photography are for the rich.
Some have already mentioned birding. It's hard to be a good bird/wildlife photographer without the necessary glass.
I think events are another area where expensive glass is needed. Fast tele zooms and professional bodies aren't cheap, but they're necessary to "get the shot".

This is like saying "if I forget to pack my camera/lenses/tripod . . . "
If a charger is needed as an essential part of your kit (long-term travel, etc.) then don't forget it.
Anyways, I'm not going to rail against cameras having the AA adapter ability. If it can be had without sacrificing other features, then why not. But in the grand scheme of things, if they needed to remove the AA ability to add one of the newer features (maybe the swivel screen? Perhaps they needed more computer stuff inside for the on-board mic?) then I'm okay with that.

The Camera Store TV did an interesting comparison on this. They pitted the Olympus using High Res Mode vs the Pentax 645Z https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uQKYgQaNHQ#t=79
Call it gimmicky, but if it's added on at no cost to other features, that's better than not having the option at all.
I think it would be neat to see this on a Pentax camera.

As a fan of the F series aesthetics, I love that pic every time I see it.
Question: Do you have that pic bookmarked so that any time it's even remotely related to a topic at hand, you can just "whip it out"? :p

Great stuff! I've been involved in a hit-and-run situation before (as a victim) and it's just not a fun process to go through, even if the perpetrator gets caught.
I hope that lady got served.

Over the past year or so my faith in law enforcement (at all levels) has been shaken with all of the high-profile stories of brutality, spying, and just plain ignorance in regards to the rights of individuals.
One thing that would help is having officers wear body cameras. It protects them, it protects citizens. Both law enforcement officials and civil rights groups welcome the idea, and I think it will go a long way to helping restore some confidence in the police back to individual citizens.
